Samir Duran stood at the base of the computer-controlled holding cell and smiled. It wasn't a pleasant sight, the Zerg tone to his skin making it seem sallower, and the faint trace of blood by his lips didn't help the view either. But the infested human was pleased. His mission had been a sucess and he was now in posession of the most powerful weapon.

To the naked eye she was a human girl, a little over eighteen years of age, with long, tumbling red hair and brown eyes, when they were open. Perhaps it was her eyes that gave the clue she was not what she appeared. Those eyes could peer into your soul, while telling you that she had seen things you could not imagine, and knew things that were better left unknown.

She had been a risk, a steal from the Zerg controlled by the UED-drugged Overmind, those who had overseen Kerrigan's rebirth. It had been during this process the Zerg had removed an hour old embryo and preserved it for later dissection, but before they had a chance tudy udy the child, the UED had claimed their Master. Duran had used the chaos to steal her away, and bring her to his hideaway while Kerrigan fought a battle on three fronts.

He had used risky measures to age her, feeding her his knowledge in the hope it would turn her to his cause. And once she had been old enough to be born... she would be Infested, and become a greater asset to the Zerg cause than Kerrigan could ever be.

Whilst musing, Duran failed to notice the girl awaken until the heard her rhythmic pounding on the plasglass walls of the chamber. His smile turned vicious. There was no way...

A loud crash broke his smile in two.

"You will imprison me no longer Duran," The girl spat, eyes aflame. The effect was rather spoilt by her almost inability to stand. That was one of the side-effects of the rapidng tng treatment he'd had to use on her. Within seconds, she was imprisoned by two Hydralisks, hissing and breathing in her ears. The red-head closed her eyes, and seconds later, the Hydralisks fled, spitting their acid at everything in sight.

"You have your mother's temper child." Duran said peacibly.

"I have a name." She replied.

Duran's eyebrow shot skyward. "You do, do you?" He looked her naked form over assesingly. "I gave you no name, only knowledge."

A laugh fell harshly from her lips. "I know who I am... My name was chosen from the knowledge you gave me. I am Phoenix Kerrigan-Raynor, rising from the ashes of my mothers destruction and betrayal, betrayed by you Duran."

Anger rose in Duran's throat, and he took a step forward. Phoenix raised one hand, and he felt himself walk into an invisible wall. "I am leaving. You cannot stop me."

Flames began to lick the length of the laboratory, and one by one, holding cells began to shatter, the hybrids within screaming and dying in seconds.

"Damn you bitch!" Samir screamed, as Phoenix vanished from his sight. He called his troops, and ordered the evacuation, not stopping to wonder how she was going to escape the planet...

Far away on Char, Kerrigan was jolted from her rest by a resounding Psionic backlash. For the breifest of seconds, her mind and the Zerg were seperate, and the Queen of Blades was forced to scrabble for the tendrils of control she kept wrapped around her minions.

What had happened? She wondered, stng ong out of her chambers and into the Monitoring Room adjacent to them, demanding a report from her underlings.

--

Another side of the Galaxy, Protoss Dark Templars paused in their thoughts, they too feeling the backlash. The majority assumed it was Kerrigan's twisted mind attempting to hunt them, and began the process of re-siting themselves.

Jim Raynor sat up in bed, sweat pouring from his body, the nagging dream fleeing his mind as waking thought chased it away. Something was wrong. He'd been dreaming of Kerrigan... He always dreamed of Kerrigan, every night. He was beyond hoping it was all just a sick joke on her part. But this time, he'd seen something else. A girl, with Kerrigan's hair and his eyes...

And she was screaming...
