Siren's Song
Standard disclaimer: I don’t own City of Heroes, a multiplayer on-line superhero role-playing game in development at Cryptic Studios. (I would if they’d release it already, though.) I’m not making any money of this, nor do I intend to, so please don’t sue me, Statesman!
Acknowledgements: many thanks go to the generous writers on my role-playing team, who have let me quote their work from a couple of our threads and incorporate them into this story. Tentagil, Tarissa, Steerpike, Spuggy260, Flair, and Damionte, ya’ll have come up with some great characters that I really enjoy! Special thanks go out to Damionte, for letting me play with Sonic for a while.
This is rated NC-17 for graphic sex, so if that offends you, is illegal for you to read, or if you’re a kid – go back!
This is a “What If” story, hitting the rewind button to go back and taking a look to see… What if Kate hadn’t jumped out of that hot tub so fast?

Chapter 1: The Siren’s Song
(In a subway tunnel below Paragon City we find our intrepid group of superheroes battling an equally super powered group of mercenary terrorists. A subway train, hostages trapped inside, is pulling away from the embattled station, on course for a one-way trip to a crash.)
Pain arced through Lorelei as she was thrown against the tunnel wall by the bright man’s light-powered blast. Her song stopped briefly, and without it her power was greatly weakened. Without her controlling influence the dark man stopped firing at his bright twin, which hadn't seemed to be doing much anyway.
Reaching out, Lorelei felt the bright man's reluctance to harm her, a woman. Grasping that emotion she launched her song again. Waves of deepest blue darkened her skin as she sang to both men, weaving a web of seductive power. Petite and delicate, she became the epitome of femininity, so that they could see nothing but the curve of her hip and the fall of her lavender hair over her breast.
Bared, pointed teeth became a sultry smile, full of the promise of delights beyond their most secret desires. Deep inside Kate could feel the Lorelei's ancient hatred welling up along with the siren’s usual amusement at manipulating humans. She remembered images of ships run over jagged rocks at the siren's call. Men jumping ship to come to her arms, only to drown in the waters as the siren pulled them close and drank the breath from their bodies.
The twin’s life-long rivalry came to the fore at this point. Both seeing each other as a rival for the love of the beautiful singer they charged each other in mid air. Shouting insults saved up from their shared childhood they forewent their powers and began duking it out.
On the ground below them the muscular African-American hero Sonic Avenger was going through the same emotional roller coaster as the twins. Left vulnerable to sound by his own powers, he was unable to screen out her song. He fell prey to the voice of the Lorelei, who had lured so many sailors to their deaths. Above him were two more rivals for the heart of this songbird that had captured his heart.
A rage of jealousy the likes of which he had never known overtook over him as he called out to the two battling brothers.
"HEY!!!" He called up to the two in a voice loud enough to shake dust from the walls of the tunnel around them. Both twins, surprised by the sudden noise, looked down only to be blasted from the sky by the full force of Sonic’s auto fire stun blasts.
"Ha! Victory is mine!" With all rivals bested Sonic turned his full attention back to Lorelei. The predatory look on his face made it very clear. He was determined to claim his prize.
Something in the back of Lorelei’s mind recognized the voice as that of Sonic Avenger, but neither the tone nor the words fit. Even as she turned to face him, Lorelei could taste the emotions and intent behind the words and felt a surge of anticipation at the challenge. The siren's song had obviously affected more than her intended prey.
Kate's voice suddenly dropped back to normal, and the waves of blue faded from her skin. She shuddered in shame at feeling the siren's excitement still flowing through her veins. She railed at herself inwardly for not noticing Sonic’s arrival, knowing that he hadn't been able to use the filtering earpieces she had provided the team.
She saw Shade finish off some sort of small demon-like creature. Eradicator was checking his sniper rifle. She couldn't see Slick. She could hear the subway train moving off in the distance, and they had very little time. She had to deal with Sonic one way or the other. She readied herself to bring up the Lorelei, prepared to control Sonic completely if that was what it took.
"Sonic, stop," she said in a gentle voice, trying to soothe away the effect of the Lorelei's song without using any power. "I'm sorry. It's alright now." As she warily gauged the rapidly diminishing distance between them, she forced herself to remain where she was, half-sprawled on the ground. Retreat might rouse his predatory instincts and make things worse until the effects of her song wore off.
Sonic reached down and pulled her roughly up against him, crushing her against his hard body. Kate pushed against his chest, but she was a petite woman in her late thirties. She was no match for the strength of a young hero in his prime. He pushed her up against the tunnel wall and pinned her there with his body, his hand across her jaw holding her face immobile. His thumb brushed her lower lip. She could feel his hard arousal against her belly. She flushed and felt a surge of heat suffuse her lower body. It had been so long since she felt a man’s desire, unnatural or otherwise.
“Sonic, stop. Please,” she said again, looking up at him.
She could faintly see his eyes through his VISOR, and saw the first flash of sanity return in the play of emotions there. First rage and then lust were followed by confusion and embarrassment. His eyes flashed in anger before settling into a cold business gaze as he regained control and set himself in order. Only then did he step back, releasing Kate and turning away from her in the direction of his other teammates.
