Epilogue
Caboose rolled over. He had never been able to sleep very well, not since Doc left. Tucker had held him that night, trying to ward off his nightmares. Caboose had slept that night. But now Caboose was in his own room.
He rolled over again, staring into his room. Sighing, he stood and walked to Doc’s old room. He blinked as the light turned on and he looked around. Everything was in place. No one had wanted to move it, even months later.
Caboose walked to the bed, looking for something, anything, to take into his room and remind him of Doc. He pulled back the bed covers. A lump formed in his throat as he picked up a small stuffed purple hippo. He had given it to Doc to sleep with a year ago. He looked at its smiling face.
A hand stroked its back, holding it to his chest. He saw it then, the splattered blood in its fur. Salty tears joined it as he sat on the bed. He knew why Doc had done it. Church had asked him, and he said that he wasn’t sure. Church had to know, right? He had seen the symbol on the floor, the one that you could still see the remains of.
“Caboose?”
Tucker walked in and sat next to the younger man. Caboose showed him the hippo. Tucker took from his hand and led Caboose to the bathroom. Tucker stripped from his clothes, carrying the animal into the shower. Caboose watched as Tucker squirted soap onto the purple fur, tenderly scrubbing away the red. Caboose discarded his own clothing, walking up to Tucker’s side. He blinked away water as Tucker handed the hippo back to him. Caboose forced a ghost of a smile onto his lips. Tucker tried to smile back. Caboose threw his arms around Tucker, holding the hippo in one hand. Tucker closed his eyes and held Caboose as they cried.
The teal soldier helped Caboose dry off. He griped his hand and led him into his own room. Caboose barely noticed. Tucker pulled back his covers. Caboose crawled in, heading for the wall. He hadn’t felt safe without it for months. He was surprised when he felt warmth at his back. Tucker’s arm wrapped around him. Caboose rolled over and nestled against the other. He held the wet hippo to his chest.
Maybe now he could sleep.
