Chapter 9

“Are you alright?” Snake asked, turning from what he was doing with the logs.

Hal nodded. "Yeah. I'm alright." he said smiling reassuringly at him.

Snake raised an eyebrow and finished what he was doing so he could sit there with his Hal.

Hal looked at him before laying his head on his shoulder. "Sorry I just felt a little tired after bringing those logs in..It was weird..”

“Maybe you should catch up with some sleep. Are you hungry?”

Hal shook his head. "No it's not that.." he said. "Never mind it's nothing."

“Are you sure?”

Hal nodded. "Yeah. If it gets worse I'll look into it.."

“Hal…”

"Dave I'll be alright.." Hal said patting Snake on the leg.

It wasn’t unlike Hal to suffer in silence, he’d seen it happen and the man could keep a pain to himself for far too long, letting it destroy him inside as if he couldn’t feel the pain. Maybe this was why Snake was worried and holding him.

Hal nuzzled him. "I love you.." he said softly. He ran his fingers over Snake's cheek and kissed his chin. "Don't worry about me..I'm a trooper."

“Why isn’t that doing anything to keep me calm?”

"If I was seriously ill I wouldn't keep it to myself."

“That’s true.” He said, still worried about him and showing it without any shame. He pulled Hal into an embrace before going to take care of a chore or other.

Hal hugged him back and started getting the dogs inside and to their beds. Once that was done he laid back on the couch.

Snake’s main concern was taking care of Hal. As he prepared for whatever storm was on its way he wondered absently what he’d do if Hal came down with something while it was hitting. This wasn’t a pleasant thought at all and he felt a rather horrible shiver.

Hal got up and rubbed his eyes before going to the kitchen to make some tea. He was starting to feel a little sick to his stomach but he really didn't want to bother Snake with something so small. Once the water boiled he made his tea and got himself some saltine crackers before going back to sit on the couch.

The small worry was slowly becoming an obsessed concern and he was becoming more and more desperate for a solution. ‘I can’t lose him’ he thought in frustrated despair at his situation.

Hal slowly ate and sipped his tea. He smiled slightly as it calmed his stomach down. "Snake...You need any help?"

“No, I’m alright.” He said, hoping it wasn’t anything else than lack of sleep and a proper meal. This was all his fault after all; he didn’t take care of Hal like he should, he didn’t do those things Hal did with him to make sure the man watched out for himself and for his nutrition.

"Well when you're finished come sit with me..." Hal replied.

Snake nodded and did as he was told as soon as he was done.

Hal laid his head in Snakes lap. "Look at them.. So well behaved.." he said nodding to the dogs.

This made Snake smile as he touched Hal’s face and watched how well behaved his pups were. He looked content to say the least.

Hal sighed in content. He loved when Snake caressed his face

Which Snake was not about to stop doing. He liked to have this kind of closeness to the man.

Hal looked at him. "Can we just stay like this..?" he asked

“As long as you like.”

"No worries..No missions..?" Hal replied.

This made Snake pause to look at him. Well he hadn’t exactly considered that much now had he?

Hal looked at him. "What..?" he asked sitting up to drink some more tea.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea”

"Why not?" Hal asked munching on a cracker.

“We can’t abandon the world like this.”
