Not Over Yet
Dr. Rimell frowned.
“Riku, I’m very sorry. We did everything we could. Believe that.”
Riku couldn’t feel anything. This couldn’t be happening. He took a staggering breath.
“I need to see him.”
“Of course.”
The doctor opened the door to the hospital room and stepped aside. Slowly Riku approached the bed. The steady sound of the heart monitor that had previously filled the white washed room was gone. A dark and chilly stillness hung in the air.
It was as though time grew slower and slower as the silver haired boy drew nearer to the bed of his lover.
“Sora…”
The name, a whisper, fell from his lips.
The other boy lay just as he had all the days before, though this time motionless. Lifeless. Yet at the same time tranquil. Peaceful. Beautiful.
Riku stood right next to the bed and looked down at the still face of his boyfriend.
“Oh God, Sora. I’m so sorry.”
Tears quietly slid down his cheeks.
“They will pay. I promise.”
He sat in the same chair he had for the last few weeks and took Sora’s hand. Still warm. He laid his head on his lover’s chest and gently sobbed.
“Riku?”
The older boy tensed.
“Riku? Hey, you ok?”
In one swift movement, Riku shot up out of his chair and back against the wall. Sora looked on confused.
“Ri, what’s wrong.”
The silver haired boy took a moment to get his bearings. He glanced around the room. Everything was much more vivid. Much more real.
“You were sleeping so peacefully; I didn’t want to wake you, even when my arm started to go all numb, but then you started crying-”
“It was dream…”
“What?”
Riku let out a relieved sigh.
“Oh thank God. Sora, I dreamed that you…”
The brunette smirked understandingly.
“I told you, I’m not going anywhere. You think I’d go back on my word?”
Slowly the older boy let a smile creep across his lips. He took his place once again in the chair next to the hospital bed and leaned in to kiss Sora.
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Riku called.
The door opened and Roxas stepped into the room.
“Hey guys. How’s it going?”
Sora tried his best to smile, what with his jaw still being wired shut. Riku nodded.
I had some free time, so I thought I’d pop in for a minute.
“Well pull up a chair,” Sora offered.
Roxas paused. The brunette boy still had his jaws wired together, so when he spoke, it sounded as though he were angry, talking through gritted teeth.
“Are you suppose to be talking?”
“Oh, yeah. The doc says it fine, even good for my jaw muscles, just as long as I keep it to a minimum.”
The blonde shrugged and grabbed a chair from the far wall.
Ooh, you touch my tra la la. Ooh, my…
“Riku. Sup?” the oldest boy answered his cell phone, “Kay, just a sec. Guys, I’m gonna step out and take this call. Kay? Love you So.” He stepped out into the hallway.
“Hmm… wonder who that is,” Roxas wondered aloud.
“Work. That’s his ring for the club.”
“Ah.”
“So,” Sora began, “how’s it going with Axel? You tell him yet?”
Roxas frowned.
“Oh God, don’t even talk about that.”
The brunette furrowed his brow.
“What happened?”
“I came on way too strong, as per usual.”
Sora looked on in anticipation, waiting for him to continue.
Roxas sighed.
“His car broke down. He stopped by my house, soaking wet. It was raining. Anyway, we talked and I sort of blurted out that I was in love with him. Then before he had even a millisecond to process that, I jumped down his throat with ‘can I kiss yous.’ Gah, it was awful. He was gonna leave, but I apologized and convinced him to spend the night on the couch. I tried to make up for it in the morning by calling and paying for a mechanic and making breakfast. But now, thanks to my rashness, we’re ‘just friends.’ That’s what happened.”
“Ooh. That good huh?”
Roxas chuckled, “ Yeah.”
The two sat quietly for a moment.
“Roxas. If Axel were a woman, would you still love him?”
“What? Sora, you know I’m gay.”
“That wasn’t the question. If Axel were exactly the same. Same personality, same favorite foods, same hobbies, only he were female. Granted, he’d be one weird woman, but would you still be in love with him?”
“Would he be a hot chick?”
“Roxas…”
The blonde sighed.
“I guess so. No, I know I would. I prefer men, but more than that, I prefer Axel.”
“Then that’s what you have to make him see. You have to make him understand that you don’t just love him because you’re a gay man and he happens to be a man who you love being with. That when he’s not around, you wish he were.”
Roxas frowned.
“That sounds good in theory, but how’m I suppose to do that?”
“Take him on a date.”
The blonde deadpanned.
“Oh! Of course! It’s so obvious! Why didn’t I see it before? Clearly the subtle way is to go right up to him and ask him out.”
“First of all, you don’t want to be subtle. Subtlety shows that you’re not one hundred percent sure of what you want. That you could take him or leave him. Second, it doesn’t have to be a romantic night at the theater with a fancy dinner afterwards. Just hang out with him. Go to an arcade. Go go-cart racing. Whatever he likes to do. Let him see that he loves being with you too.”
Roxas thought for a moment.
“I guess so.”
“Hey, if it doesn’t work out after all this, you still got me and Riku.”
Roxas smiled.
“Thanks.”
“No problem. Man, you sure gave my jaw a work out.”
Roxas smirked.
“Pervert.”
Sora smirked back.
The door to the room opened up once again. A very energetic Riku rushed into the room.
“They caught ‘em! That was Zigbar. The cops caught the bastards that jumped you So. They need me to go down to the station and ID them.”
The other two boys’ eyes widened.
Sora sat up a little.
“Remember. They both had brunette hair. And the one had a scar.”
Riku chuckled as he gave the brunette a quick kiss on the forehead.
“Don’t worry So. I couldn’t possibly forget their faces. I’ll be back later, kay? You just hang out here with Roxas.”
The blonde glanced at the clock on the wall.
“Actually, I’ve gotta get going too. I’m hanging out with Axel, Dem and his current boy toy.”
“Hey, talk to him,” Sora added.
“Yeah, I will, thanks. See ya guys later.”
Roxas waved goodbye and left.
“Well, you get some rest then. I’ll be back as soon as I’m done making sure these assholes get what they deserve.”
Sora smirked.
“My hero.”
Riku smiled as he rushed out the door.
“Love you So.”
Sora laid back and let his eyes slip closed. A lot had gone wrong recently. Sora’s ‘accident.’ Roxas screwing up with Axel. But karma always seems to come in waves, and it was about damn time some good luck came along.
“Riku, I’m very sorry. We did everything we could. Believe that.”
