Chapter 9

Across Hima’s wind whipped plateau, smoke spiraled up from the chimneys of log cabins in this remote mountain village. At the edge Lloyd stood gazing out over the Tower of Salvation. Behind him were laid graves of people who escaped from the Asgard Ranch, only to end up as monsters after their Ex-sphere’s were removed, buried in this spot considered cursed ground by most villagers. Lloyd thought of his mother glancing wistfully at the graves.

“Mom, why were you so sad?” Lloyd asked himself, feeling Anna’s pain vibrate out from his Ex-sphere during his prior wedding with Kratos. “You know something, don’t you?”

Clasping his hand with the sapphire gem mounted in, he hugged it to his chest as if it were his very mother in the flesh.

“Hello, Lloyd,” a deep musical voice called softly, lilting over Lloyd’s shoulder like a sweet caress.

Spinning around, Lloyd lost himself in wine-red irises peering out from beneath a curtain of auburn bangs.

“Kratos,” Lloyd replied with bated breath, his eye tracing the delicious curves of Kratos’s supple body. They just made love a few days ago, already the yearning of memory in Lloyd’s body from that time beckoned, wanting Kratos again.

Smiling slightly, Kratos’s eyes grew sad like the time at the Luin Ranch when he avenged Anna’s death, plunging his blade through Kvar for insulting her.

Do you know something I don’t? Lloyd’s reason fought back against his bodily desires, searching Kratos for answers.

“Please know that I love you, Lloyd, no matter what may happen tomorrow,” Kratos’s tremulous voice revealed, cadence low and tender.

Again, you’re being mysterious. What are you plotting, Kratos? Lloyd’s wandering mind questioned.

Kratos swallowed, the Adam’s apple in his throat quivering. Although subtle, it exposed his fear to Lloyd, who read him like an open book.

“Of course you love me, it’s why we’re married, right?” Lloyd shot sharply, coming a pace closer.

Wrapping an arm around Lloyd, Kratos held Lloyd’s hand with the wedding ring between his fingers. “Yes, more than you’ll ever know, Lloyd.” Deep emotion brimmed in Kratos’s voice, his ruby irises locked on Lloyd. “Destiny has a way of pulling us down each of our own paths.”

/What does that mean?/ Wondered Lloyd, frowning.

“Although our destinies may separate us, never forget…I love you.” His head crooned over Lloyd’s shoulder from behind, Kratos kissed him on the cheek, his lips traveling to steal Lloyd’s lips in a soul-searing kiss.

/Kratos, you keep saying you love me. What does this mean? What are you afraid will happen?/ Lloyd gasped, shivers crawling up his spine from tingles coursing through when Kratos passionately kissed him.

“I want to show you how I feel, before destiny takes us down each our own paths,” Kratos whispered further, sweeping Lloyd in his arms.

He carried Lloyd away from the cursed burial grounds of Asgard Ranch victims to the very summit of the plateau winding up, where a man earlier in the day offered rides on his dragons to view the Tower of Salvation up close. This time Lloyd explored the mystique of Kratos’s body, pale flesh writhing under the collar of Kratos’s neck, exposed to Lloyd’s roaming lip’s moving down to the base of Kratos’s neck, Lloyd’s tongue darting out between the dip of Kratos’s collarbones, flicking softly.

Kratos moaned, arching his back, gloved fingers tangled in Lloyd’s loose disheveled hair. Lloyd learned fast in love as well as Kratos’s instruction in swordsmanship. Unlatching the clasp that tied Kratos’s cape, Lloyd lifted off Kratos’s shirt, his mouth latching onto one of Kratos’s nubs. Teeth grazing gently, alternating with tongue, Lloyd teased Kratos drawing out a low heated moan.

This night of lovemaking would be burned in Lloyd’s memory forever when facing future pain from Kratos’s betrayal. Something in Lloyd savored every moment spanning an eternity. He wanted to know what Kratos’s meant by the paths of destiny separating, and love surviving that rift.

The next day Kratos awoke early, lost in thought outside, gazing at the Tower of Salvation.

“Please Lloyd, forgive me for what I am about to do,” Kratos implored, closing his eyes, sighing heavily. “Being Origin’s seal bounds me to his lordship. If I tried to leave him, he would kill those I hold dear, endangering your life, Lloyd.”

Colette loosing her memories of her friends and heart at the Tower of Salvation had hurt Lloyd deeply, but what truly hurt from the bottom of his heart was Kratos’s heart wrenching betrayal. Lloyd shook with rage, trembled in shock, paralyzed with agony. He glowed blue, Anna’s spirit in his Ex-sphere whirling madly coursed through him, unleashing all his pent up mana trapped inside. Unfurling with a fury, Lloyd’s mana burst free in transparent aqua blue wings shooting out.

“What’s this? Lloyd’s an angel, just like Kratos!?” stammered Genis, falling back.

“I don’t understand about Cruxis, Colette becoming Martel’s vessel, or anything. But I do this know. You said you loved me, Kratos!” Lloyd cried, unsheathing his twin blades.

The wedding wing around Lloyd’s finger shattered from the violence of Lloyd’s mana, symbolizing the eternal love that bound father and son as lovers seemingly shattered.

“That is why I told you about paths diverging,” Kratos stated calmly, brandishing his blade in return. Inside his heart cried out in pain. He could never forgive himself for hurting the one he loved most dear, his son, his baby boy, his love, his Lloyd.

“YOU LIAR!” Lloyd seethed with anger charging madly at Kratos.
Steel clanged against steel, father and son, once best friends and lovers turned enemies like fire and ice clashed battled fiercely.

/Oh my Kratos, my beloved, how could you?/ Wept Anna’s spirit inside Lloyd’s Ex-sphere.

Anna’s sorrow fueled Lloyd’s insurmountable strength thundering through. A dewdrop beaded on the round glassy top of Lloyd’s Ex-sphere, Anna’s tears that manifested trickling down, staining Lloyd’s glove.

“Mom, you knew!” sniffled Lloyd, kissing the gem sadly, tasting his mother’s salty tears.

“I’ve had enough,” murmured Kratos, charging at Lloyd so hard, he sent him reeling back into a pillar, knocking it over.

Lloyd lost conscious, but not before a menacing, but luminous light descended from above blinding him. A slender muscular man, revealing every curve and sinew of his body clothed in white, the collar of his shirt down his open exposed chest trimmed in gold, descended. Cold eyes narrowing, thin lips stretched in a smirk, he glanced down at Lloyd falling unconscious.

“Hmm, what’s this? Another angel besides Kratos?” Yddrasill questioned, alighting beside Lloyd. “His mana signature seems human, though.”

“My lord.” Kratos bowed humbly before the supreme angel lord.
In the fight between Kratos and Lloyd, the Renegades had come and taken Colette, before she could finish her angel transformation, along with Genis and Raine who followed them.

“My sister’s vessel may be gone for now, but I think this is more interesting.” The golden haired angel leader grinned evilly, taking Lloyd in his arms. “Let us return to Derris-Kharlan, shall we?” he suggested to his subordinate seraphim.

Merely nodding, Kratos swallowed, feeling his throat tighten. He never intended for this to happen. He only thought Lloyd would have to heal from the wounds of a broken heart after Kratos’s betrayal. Vanishing in a beam of light, Kratos and Yddrasill with Lloyd in tow vanished teleporting up in space towards Derris-Kharlan’s holy city, Welgaia. What would await Lloyd in this strange, surreal realm?
