HaloCell 8: Relentless pursuit

HaloCell 8: Relentless pursuit

In a split second all hell broke loose. Romans jumping out of the bushes, off trees and he could swear he saw one come at him from underground. Most of his soldiers were fighting with their shields down. Soon they’ll start dropping like flies. Fisher was attacking non-stop, he knew someone had to be giving him the order. Dodging Sam’s attempts to throw him, he looked around for Tara. She was a traitor and he wouldn’t hesitate to kill her now. The Chief saw her, grabbed Fisher’s arm and took aim. He quickly unloaded a whole clip in her chest. She gagged and dropped to the ground, instantly Sam stopped. He stood there motionless, like a doll without batteries. He was about to take the helmet off, when another Roman took him by the arm and ran away.
Jimmy saw them and followed, this was his chance. If he was faster than the Chief he could kill the spy, no one would have to know. He saw the Chief to his left, who hadn’t seen him yet running behind him. He heard a chopper somewhere in the distance, then another far at the rear.
“Those rats!!” he shouted “They are extracting their science projects!”
He sped up the pace; he had to catch up before they got on that chopper. He looked left again and realized the Chief was gone. Maybe he was faster after all. Thoughts of how he would kill Fisher raced through his mind. He wanted to make the little rat suffer and beg for mercy, but he’d have to do it quickly or risk getting caught by the chief.
He heard one choppers’ desperate attempt to stay up, and out a nowhere a blade spun past him. James stopped and looked up and saw the Chief climb into the other helicopter. It kept flying unsteadily, while a gun battle raged in its inside. Suddenly, he heard a loud bang and soon after a large object flew out of it, rapidly falling towards the ground below. The helicopter steadied itself and continued flying farther away from him. James realized it must have been the chief, after he heard a faint moan over the radio. He stopped, the ravine stretched in front of him as if mocking him. The chief had fallen on the other side, clearly enemy side. They had gun towers that were quickly rotating to attack him. He swerved and ran towards the forest seeking cover, those armor piercing bullets bouncing off his shields. He was going to need the rest of the squad to get in there, the chief needed them.
---------
John woke up to a massive headache and a sudden feeling of emptiness. Cortana was gone. A sharp pain in his chest overwhelmed him as he tried to get up. He clenched his fist without realizing it, and noticed his rifle was gone. It had fallen several feet away, getting to it gave him even more pain. He remembered fighting inside the chopper, then a bright flash blinded him and a sudden blast sent him flying away. He heard the whining of machinery somewhere behind him, and the locking and unlocking of mechanisms getting ready to fire. The Chief turned to see two huge gun towers slowly rotating to lock on him. A deafening noise told him they were ready to fire. Relying purely on instinct he ran opposite to the ravine and away from the towers, which released a rain of bullets on him. He ran looking for cover, but everything in front of him was being obliterated, all cover destroyed before his eyes. The bullets bounced off his shields at first and then off his armor, but one made it all the way through. It came in straight through the back of his thigh and came out on the other side, continuing its high velocity journey. He didn’t stop, although he felt himself limp a little. Another bullet hit him on the back. He stumbled forward and fell face down, his eyes closed in pain. He noticed the turrets had stopped firing. Apparently they shot moving targets and he had stopped running. The Chief looked forward, somehow he felt they weren’t going to stay still for long, someone must be monitoring those things, and surely they would spot him. He saw a couple of the wide steel towers in the distance, the closest one to him was about a mile away. It would be quite a sprint. Without thinking about it twice he ran towards it, the whirring and whining of metal at his back. Ten seconds later they both began firing again. Obviously they never had to use those things, no one had bothered to maintain them or upgrade them; a ten second delay was good news for him.
He felt his chest ache and burn, and he could hardly see in front of him anymore. Everything was getting blurry and disordered. He dropped to the ground, face down, hopelessly trying to breath inside his helmet. The turrets stopped once again. His whole body felt numb, and the steel tower seemed farther away than it really was. He needed more time. He took a large rock in his hand and threw it high in the air to the left. The turret gave its ten second delays and began firing at the air. By then the Chief was running as fast as he could. The turret moved and gave another whine, painfully adjusting to a new target. Before they could fire, the chief took cover behind the steel tower. The gun turret stopped. A moment of relief washed over him, when dozens of small round discs flew up from the ground in front of him firing at him. The small projectiles penetrating his armor; not giving his shields enough time to recharge. John felt his knees give in, suddenly his armor felt heavy and his helmet unnecessary; but he lacked the strength to take it off. He clenched his fist and fell to the ground. His eyes darted all over the place aimlessly trying to focus, only to find the clouds above him. All the sounds around him had faded off. His vision became even more blurred; all he saw now was an amalgamation of white and blue above him. Slowly, everything was engulfed in shadows.
