The Hidden Past

***In case I didn't make it clear earlier, (') symbolizes thought and (") is speaking aloud. Just thought I'd clarify, enjoy!***

“…Relax, Ganondorf. Have you no faith in my teaching?” Laughed Zelda.
The day had passed uneventfully, Zelda and Ganondorf having spent their day studying in the castle library for any other ways to destroy what they had named Evil. Ganondorf’s knowledge was vast, and they learned many things that day. With the sun fading away to sleep, Zelda had decided to teach Ganondorf how to heal.
Ganondorf was extremely nervous. Zelda had been firm with him doing healing on her. Out of the two successes and four failed spells, one had gone wrong and he had accidentally burned Zelda’s side slightly. “Now, just one more healing spell to mend my side.” She continued
“Zelda…” He moaned, looking at her side with guilt. “Perhaps I am not meant to be able to heal.”
“You just need to find the precise thought to fill your mind…No running away Ganondorf! What are you going to do if I get injured while we are fighting Evil?”
“………”
She smirked slightly. “I thought so.” Then her face softened. “Your Triforce can be used to heal. Power is not only used to destroy…Think of something you love. The desert, some flower…a happy thought.”
Ganondorf closed his eyes and thought for a few seconds then raised his hands and placed them over her side. Red glowed underneath his hands and Zelda felt a coolness ease away the burning and heal up the last bit of the cut left by the ReDead.
Zelda’s eyes widened and she lifted the top part of her gown slightly. Nothing but pink skin. “Goddesses…You see? That was not even painful! What, by Nayru did you think of?”
Ganondorf, whose gaze had been resting on the patch of skin visible at Zelda‘s waist, flushed and looked away. “It was a silly thought. I shall tell you some other time.”
“…Let me guess…A favorite food dish?”
For a moment Ganondorf just stared at her, then burst out laughing. “No, nothing that ridiculous.”
“Speaking of food, don’t you two want dinner?” Said a voice by the door.
Zelda whipped around. “Neela!” And indeed, it was the Zora cook standing by the door, a small smile on her face.
Zelda stood quickly in front of Ganondorf, trying to explain. “N…Neela, he is not evil…”
“Don’t worry Milady. The Phantom told me all about it. I believe you.”
“Oh…Thank the Gods!” Said Zelda, calming.
“I left a nice dinner for the both of you in your room, Milady.”
“Thank you Neela. Now that you bring up the subject, I am famished!…Would you like to join me, Sir Ganondorf?” She asked questioningly.
He offered his arm. “It would be an honor, Lady Zelda.”

***
Zelda sat back and sighed. She had just ended the contact with the sage, Saria. All was going well and the three fairies would meet them at the Temple of Time tomorrow. She relayed the information to Ganondorf, then put some cake on her plate.
Neela had said ‘dinner.’ but, in Zelda’s opinion, this was more like a personal feast. So many different kinds of foods, including Gerudo spice foods, covered the glass table. Three different beverages and four different desserts were included.
Ganondorf poured some more light wine for Zelda. “Your chef is amazing.”
“Thank you. She always loves to cook up a good meal.”
They were both silent for many minutes then, thinking of many things, but most of all, what tomorrow would bring.
Ganondorf set aside his empty plate and grasped Zelda’s hands gently, relieved when she did not flinch. “I have something to tell you. Something very important that I have been hiding.”
Zelda could not help blushing slightly when he grabbed her hands, but kept her eyes locked on his. “Then, I am glad you are telling me.”
“It would be easier for you to see it in your mind…Will you let me enter?”
Zelda stiffened, then nodded, mentally sealing away all the secrets she knew of Hyrule.
Ganondorf stood, bringing Zelda with him. “I swear by the Triforce that all the images you are about to see are true…Even though you may not believe them.”
He gently placed his hands on either side of her face and they both closed their eyes. “You shall see these memories as a bystander…”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Memories From The Past~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun shone brightly and the sound of trumpets reached Zelda’s ears. She was standing beside Ganondorf in a castle courtyard surrounded by a small crowd of people…Hyrule Castle! She turned to ask Ganondorf, but her unasked question was answered. “We are in my memories. No one can see us, or hear us.” Indeed, who would come riding up the path but a slightly younger Ganondorf. There was a boyishness to his face, making Zelda sure he was in his teens.
‘This must be before he was taken by the spirit.’ Thought Zelda as she watched Ganondorf dismounted from his horse smiling and kneeling before the waiting King. ‘But, how can this be? I did not trust Ganondorf when I first saw him!…He never smiled…’
“Welcome, Lord Ganondorf! It is an honor to finally meet you! Said King Harkinan, dressed in his royal robes.
“The honor is all mine, King Harkinan. I am glad to finally forge an alliance between our two races.”
‘An alliance? Between the Gerudo and Hylians?! There never was one!’ Zelda turned to Ganondorf, but he placed a hand over her mouth. “Just watch.”
“Come, refreshments await.”
“Thank you, Sire.”
Zelda followed them, mystified as she watched her father eat and drink with Ganondorf.
“Well, the scrolls have been signed, but we need something to really show that we’ve made an alliance…Would you care for a new blade, Ganondorf?”
“I have my sword.” Said the young Ganondorf, gesturing toward his huge broadsword. “The scroll is enough. You really do not need to…”
“But I insist! This is a great moment that I have long waited for! The people will be overjoyed when they hear about this! Hyrule shall finally be united and I must give you something…something…” Sighed the old King, drumming his fingers on the side of his face.
“Father?”
The older Zelda gasped as herself, no older than nine peeked into the room.
“Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t know he was here! Gasped the young Zelda.
“Don’t worry dear…In fact, I need you! Come help your old father into the garden.”
The young Zelda giggled and ran forward. Grabbing her father’s hand she pulled, supposedly, helping him to stand.
“Thank you my dear. Zelda, this is Lord Ganondorf, King of the Gerudos. Ganondorf, my only child and heir, Zelda. She is the image of my late queen.”
Zelda nervously curtsied, looking up at the tall King. Ganondorf smiled warmly at the girl and bowed deeply.
“Lord Ganondorf.”
“Princess Zelda.”
“Come, come now! Won’t get to the garden just staring at each other!”
Zelda blushed and ran to catch up with her father as he walked to the garden.
Later, as Zelda ran about the garden, Harkinan sat and talked seriously with Ganondorf. “I have thought of a way…But I’m not sure if you would agree with it!”
“Please tell me, my King.”
“…Would you consider taking my daughter’s hand in marriage?”
Ganondorf’s eyes widened and he looked at the laughing girl, startled. “She is young.”
“You are but seventeen, yes? She is nine, and very mature. You can be betrothed until she reaches the age of thirteen.”
“B…but why me?! I am just a Gerudo wolf.” Cried a bewildered Ganondorf.
“I am getting old. Many high nobles see the throne as theirs…feeling a girl should not take the throne. If you were to marry, it would seal the alliance, and a strong man with a good heart would sit on the throne.”
Ganondorf watched as Zelda danced among the flowers, picking some whenever she saw a nice one. “What if she does not wish to marry me?” He said softly. “I do not wish to marry just for the alliance. Do not get me wrong, I am honored at the position that you offer me! But, I am not the kind of man to force a woman to love me.”
King Harkinan too, watched Zelda. “You can ask her of her feelings, but I think I already know what her answer will be. I have never seen her so comfortable nor open, in a new person’s presence…She likes you.”
As if to prove this, Zelda ran up and handed her father a large handful of flowers. Then she turned to Ganondorf and shyly handed him a rose.
Harkinan chuckled as an astonished Ganondorf accepted. “Thank you…My Lady.”
Zelda ran off, blushing once more. “The Princess does indeed, seem taken with you.” Said a quiet voice.
They both turned to see a slim figure standing to their left in the shadows, also watching the princess. Ganondorf’s hand went to his sword, but Harkinan stopped him. “This is Impa, Zelda’s attendant and guardian.”
Impa walked out of the shadows and knelt on one knee.
“You are a Sheikah!” Gasped Ganondorf. “I have never seen one before.”
“My kind is rare…I must admit I have never seen your race either.”
Ganondorf laughed, remembering his own, slightly xenophobic race and turned back to the laughing princess as she ran about in the sunlight. “My wife…” He murmured.
The older Zelda sat on a stone bench, watching her younger self run around and give flowers to her audience. “What is going on, Ganondorf?! If these are your memories, Why can I not remember as well?” Demanded Zelda, shocked by what she was hearing.
“I shall explain it all, I promise. But for now, just watch.”
The scene blurred, then came into focus. It was now late evening, and young Zelda stood in the garden alone with Ganondorf.
“Do you like it here, Lord Ganondorf?”
Ganondorf chuckled and placed a star lily in her hair. “Yes. This is a nice change from the desert.”
Zelda, smiling brightly, touched the flower and then grabbed another rose to give to Ganondorf. She gave a little cry and released it. Realizing what had happened, Ganondorf quickly picked up her hand and separated her clenched fingers. Three cuts, with blood oozing out and smearing slightly on her palm, were clearly visible in the moonlight.
“Oh, I’m so sorry Lord Ganondorf! I bloodied your nice rose! It’s just some small cuts, don‘t worry. I’m so clumsy!”
Ganondorf pulled a black handkerchief from underneath his shoulder armor and tied it tightly around her wounded hand. “You are anything but clumsy, Princess.”
“Please call me Zelda.” She said, blushing once again from his touch.
He led her over to a bench under dome of jasmine and lilacs. “…Will you call me Ganondorf?”
“If you wish it.”
“Good, because I have something very important to ask you.” He said, still holding her hands.
“Ask me anything!” She said, smiling brightly.
“Do you c…care for me?” He said, watching tensely.
“Of course!” She said, looking puzzled.
Ganondorf, was for a moment shocked. Then he shook his head. “I mean, do you…love me?”
All childishness left Zelda, and a very mature look of an adult in deep thought crossed her face. Even her voice had deepened when she asked: “Is this about the alliance my father was talking about?”
“To some extent, but the main reason is…I believe I am…in love with you…” Said Ganondorf, softly.
“I am but a child. You are a man. How can you love me?” She asked, still looking at him seriously.
“In four years, you will be old enough to marry. How can I love you? I love your spirit, your laughter, your smile. I love…you.” He replied, the wisdom in her eyes slightly unnerving him.
“…Even if we were to be betrothed, I could not offer you much in the way love is expressed. You would accept that?” She sounded slightly skeptical as a faint flush came over her cheeks.
For a few moments, Ganondorf just stared at her opened-mouthed. He then turned away, finally realizing what she was talking about, causing him to blush like mad. “Gods…of course! That may be what many men think about, but I am not one of them! Love-making does not truly matter right now…Just the knowledge that you would be my wife…How on earth did you…?!” He sputtered
The corner of young Zelda’s mouth turned up, and Zelda was startled to see that she still did that.
“Young I may be, but I’m not ignorant.” She said, slightly angered despite herself.
Ganondorf looked at her, slightly guilty. “True, your body is that of a child’s, yet your mind soars far beyond that point. Forgive me.”
“There is nothing to forgive…But, are you sure?”
Ganondorf released one of her hands and gently trailed his fingers down her face. “I have never been more sure of anything.” Trembling slightly, he waited for her answer.
“What would you do if I said yes?”
“…You saying yes would be a dream to me…So, I do not even hope for it, lest my heart be destroyed.”
“Destroyed…” she murmured, looking away.
“Zelda, I cannot take this…Please tell me!” He gasped and sank to his knees at her feet.
She too, knelt on the ground. “I would be honored, to be your wife…if you will have me.”
“…You love me?” He whispered, barely breathing.
“As far as I can tell with my child’s heart,……more than anything.”
Ganondorf felt like his heart would burst from happiness as he kissed her hands. “Gods, thank you…I care for you so much…Zelda!”
She smiled her radiant smile and pulled him up. “…And I, you. Let’s go tell my father! He will be pleased!”
***
It was the next day, and King Harkinan said that he would announce their betrothal and the alliance the day after. Ganondorf had barely left Zelda’s side all day, and all that saw them could see that she did not object.
Late in the evening, Zelda went to bed early then usual, tired from a busy day. Ganondorf stood out in the garden, once again thanking the gods, when he felt something touch his mind. Curious, he opened his mind to let whoever it was through.
Ganondorf screamed as something cold wormed its way violently into his mind. “I am the son of the God of Evil…My perfect home of chaos destroyed by the three Goddesses, I have waited…Too long have I waited for one such as you. You, who have so much yet still yearn for more. You have much potential. Give me control of your body and we shall rule this land called Hyrule.”
Ganondorf heard the Spirit’s true wish underneath all his words. He wished to destroy Hyrule, and slaughter its people.
Furious, Ganondorf mentally shoved the presence away. “I shall have nothing to do with you. I can feel your wish to dominate all life, and that is not my wish. Leave!” He snarled.
The Spirit clung onto his mind with unbreakable strength. “Give up. It is only a matter of time until my cold with surround your heart and soul…Then, you will be mine!”
Ganondorf tried to ignore the cold feeling filling his chest. The cold not just from fear. “Your evil may soon surround my heart, but you shall never take it.” He said quietly, pushing the cold presence to the back of his mind. ‘How? How can be rid of him?……I cannot…He will prevail…Goddesses, what will he do if he finds out that I love Zelda?!…No… Never! I would rather die! I shall hide all my thoughts…bury them underneath shield made from all my power…But what of Zelda? She will remember…’
Hiding in the shadows, Ganondorf slipped passed all the guards and entered the royal quarters. Entering the king’s room, he walked over to the bed and placed a hand above the monarch’s head. Entering the king’s mind, Ganondorf hid all memories of him and the alliance. ‘Perhaps, one day I will be able to lift it. It is best that I do not destroy the memories.’ Ganondorf left the room and silently walked down the hall. Arriving at another door, he opened it, tense.
Moonlight shone through the balcony window, reaching the little figure lying on in the bed. Ganondorf turned to the right and just barely seeing Impa sleeping in the shadows. Glad that he had trained extensively in stealth, Ganondorf quietly walked over to her. Just like the king, Impa had all her memories of him erased. He then turned toward the bed. Zelda lay peacefully serene, unaware of his presence. He knelt and gently kissed the sleeping figure. “To protect you, I must do this…I hope one day I shall be able to lift this…and see you again……I shall love you for all eternity, Zelda.” He whispered.
Tenderly brushing a few stray strands of hair away from her face. He locked away the memories that only he had the key to. “I pray that one day, I shall truly, see you again…Farewell.”
With that, Ganondorf fled to his own room and surrendered his body to the spirit. Yet, deep within his mind, he hid his emotions and sanity…No one would see or have those…Evil would never use his love for Zelda against him…
Nine years in the future, Ganondorf pulled Zelda from the memory
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“…W..w…what? We…we were…betrothed?!”
“Yes.”
The bewildered Zelda crumpled to the floor, her legs giving way. Quickly catching her, Ganondorf sat her on the edge of her bed. “I know this is a bit of a shock, forgive me.”
Trying to absorb all the information, she closed her eyes. “Release the barrier around my memory.”
“…As you wish.”
Zelda felt something give way in her mind and suddenly all the images she had just seen were right in front of her. She could not see Ganondorf, or her room, all she could see was that time, yet from a different perspective. She was drowning in the flood of memories. She could feel the emotions that she used to have for him…did she still have them?
“Zelda!”
Two warm hands on her icy cold face brought her back to her body. Her eyes snapped open. Ganondorf was looking at her fearfully. “Are you all right?”
“Yes, yes I am fine.” She murmured hastily, skin growing warm as she realized he was touching her again. “I am…” She stopped. “…Ganondorf, do you still have… feelings for me?”
“You are asking, if I still love you?”
“…Yes.” whispered Zelda.
For a long moment, there was nothing but silence. “……I love you more than anyone I have ever known.”
Again there was a silence and Zelda opened her mouth to say something, but Ganondorf swiftly placed a hand over it. “Please hear me out. I wanted to tell you because it would only be honorable. I did not wish to hide things from you because you have trusted me and accepted me. I know you must be furious and humiliated…”
Ganondorf stood. “I am sorry to drop this burden of knowledge on you, but it did not feel right hiding this from you after all that has happened.”
He walked away, and had just reached the door when Zelda called out to him. “Ganondorf.”
He turned, his face hidden in the shadows. “Yes?”
“…Did you ever consider that I might feel the same way?”

***

Now it was Ganondorf’s turn to be shocked. “What?!”
She rose from the bed, keeping her face averted from his. “I did not know what I felt at first…for it has been many years since I felt love. I thought I must be insane, but my hidden memory has convinced me…I am…I still….I love…you…”
A pair of hands grabbed her shoulders and she realized that it was him.‘Gods, he is as silent as he is quick.’ He turned her to face him, and Zelda was alarmed by the almost wild look in his eyes. “You love…me?”
“…Yes….So much……it is almost painful….Ganondorf…”
He stopped her with a passionate kiss, wrapping her tightly in his arms. He expected her to push him away, perhaps even to scream, but he was greatly surprised when she willingly kissed him back. “Zelda…” He whispered, his heart feeling like it had, nine years ago.
“I love you, Ganondorf.” She gasped, pulling back only to breathe.
“Then use my true name, Ganon. Among the Gerudo, couples are allowed to use each others real name…in private.”
“…Ganon.” Said Zelda, softly.
Ganondorf bent down and captured her lips again. Zelda moaned as one of his fangs gently caressed her lower lip. She opened her mouth and allowed him entrance. Ganondorf traced his tongue in her mouth, leaveing no area untouched. Ganondorf felt himself almost getting drunk on her taste. For a moment, he just wanted to throw her down and… ‘By Din, I will not lose my control! That would shatter what trust she has given me…The trust I barely deserve…I must take things slow, she is not ready’ Despite Ganondorf’s wish to take it slow, his body had other ideas.
Zelda felt something large growing hard against her lower stomach. ‘By the Gods! That is…’ She blushed. “Ganondorf…”
He drew away from her. “Do not worry Zelda. I shall never force you into doing anything…My body is just…”
“…We are all alone…and there is a bed right here..” She whispered, blushing darker.
He stared at her in disbelief, sure he had not heard right. When her blush confirmed it, he faced an inner struggle. He wanted to…Gods, he had wanted to this close to her for so long…allowing himself an occasional fantasy while he was still a prisoner in his own mind…But was she truly ready? “….Are you sure?” He said, quietly and seriously.
“….More then anything……I want you to be my first…my only…The one….to take me……” She replied, making her eyes stay looking at him.
He took a step forward.
“Tonight…”
He took another step.
“…Now.”
Ganondorf closed the rest of the distance between them with enthusiasm. He was more than willing to comply.
