Chapter Nine: Hostage Situation
"She can't give my baby away!" Shadow shouted at Sonic, still holding Amy in one hand and the head of the cleaver in the other. Sweat was pouring down his face, and blood was trickling into a slow, steady pool on the floor.
"What, and you're going to be a good daddy?" Sonic almost laughed at the mental image, "Look at yourself, Shadow! You're not exactly a great role model here."
"She CAN'T!" Shadow shouted again, "I'm never going to have another chance!"
"Why do you think that?" the blue hedgehog asked calmly with a shrug, "You don't know the future, and I can see someone falling for you eventually..." He had to bite his tongue on that last part.
"Yeah, right, like the doctors in the fucking asylum?!" Shadow spat. He dropped Amy and the cleaver, "I didn't even know I could have children... a family..." his voice grew angry again, "If she doesn't want it I'll have it!"
"'fraid not,” Sonic quickly replied, shaking his head, "I think you lost all custody rights when you, you know, raped her." Slowly, Sonic slipped into a more combat-ready stance. "You told me you would get better, Shadow. I trusted you."
"I didn't kill her, did I?" Shadow growled at him, "And you were the one who broke me out! I told you I'm sick, I told you to take me back while there was still time... and now it's TOO FUCKING LATE!"
"It's never too late,” Sonic insisted, standing his ground, "You know that something's wrong with you, so just stop it!"
"You think I'm not TRYING?!" Shadow bellowed back at Sonic, "I'm not going back there! Not now, not ever! And that's my baby! Don't display your ignorance, Sonic! I have a RIGHT!" Amazingly he was right. Even rapists had the right to see their children.
"Yeah, and until you shape up, I'm denying you it,” Sonic spoke plainly. The attitude was put aside, replaced by focus and determination; he was ready for this to come to blows, "I broke you out, and I can put you right back in." As the two men argued, Amy crawled away slowly, reaching towards the dropped knife.
Shadow didn't notice, "I'll kill you first!" he yelled at Sonic, "Or I could take it to court, and what say would you have then? Fuck all! Get your fat, smug face out of shit that doesn't concern you!"
"My friends are my concern,” Sonic called back, cocky and defiant as ever, "Last chance, Shadow! Calm down, or go down!"
Amy's hand wrapped around the handle of the knife, and with a cry of frightened rage, she lunged at the black hedgehog. "I'll kill you!" she shouted.
"Wha-" Shadow didn't even turn around, and it saved his life. He dived to one side, and the knife dragged across his shoulder. He slumped to his knees swearing and clutching the wound, "And you call me dangerous?" he growled at Sonic, before rolling again as the knife stabbed towards him.
"Amy, cut it out!" Sonic called out, realizing that it was probably the wrong choice of words for the situation. Taking action, he ran forward and grabbed the pink hedgehog's wrist, keeping her from causing any more damage. "Stop it, both of you!"
Shadow was about to lunge at Sonic and Amy and take them on together, when sirens outside began wailing, "What... GUN?!" he looked out the window, then back at Sonic, "YOU BASTARD!!!" he screamed at him, "You called them, didn't you?! Is this your idea of a sick joke?! You break me out just to put me back in again?! Or does it make you feel more of a hero?!"
A shocked look on his face, Sonic pointed at himself, uttering, "Me?! Why would I call them?" The door opened up, and rather than a team of heavily armed soldiers, all that rushed inside was one young, two-tailed fox.
"YOU!!!" Shadow pointed at Tails, "You called them! I'll rip out your guts and hang you with them, you little freak!!!"
Tails shivered in fear, but he didn't back down or cower from the hedgehog. "I won't let you hurt my friends,” he spoke meekly. Sonic rubbed his face, wondering how this could possibly end well.
"Damn you!" Shadow gripped his shoulder tightly. Even if he could stand around shouting and raging, that didn't mean it didn't fucking hurt. The trick was not showing that it hurt, "I'm not going back there! Sonic, Amy, keep your asses away from the windows, they'll have snipers!" he snarled. This show of concern really surprised the two hedgehogs.
Sonic didn't argue, though, not wanting to have a hole drilled in the back of his head. "Do you have a plan to get out of here?" he asked the wounded hedgehog.
"No!" Shadow yelled, leaning against a wall and trying to look casual, "Maybe you can come up with one of your 'I don't have a plan' plans! Why do you care whether I escape or not, anyway?" he asked.
"Will you stop asking?" an exasperated Sonic asked in return, "Caring, friendship, promise, all that. The only plan I've got is rush out and get shot."
"Then there's only one thing to do," Shadow said simply. Sonic looked at him quizzically, "I'll have to take you four as-"
"Three," Tails corrected him.
"No, freak, four," Shadow pointed at Amy, "Hostages."
Sonic's instant impulsive reaction was to rebel against the laughable idea of being held hostage. "What? Are you nuts, Shadow? That...." Then the blue hedgehog thought about it for a second, and a smile spread across his face. "...that might actually work!" Both Amy and Tails looked at him like he had lost his mind.
"You," Shadow grabbed Tails by his chest fur, "Get up by the window and tell them I've got hostages."
"Why me?" Tails squeaked.
"Because calling up GUN was your idea. Because you don't look anything like me. Because you're small and insignificant. Because seeing you get plugged by GUN would be a real pick-me-up. And because I'll pummel you if you don't," Shadow growled.
"Alright! Alright!" Tails squeaked, holding his hands up defensively. Nervously, the fox walked over to the window and hoped that Shadow knew what he was doing. Opening the window, he shouted, "Don't shoot! He's got us as hostages!" And then he flinched, expecting his body to be pierced by a wave of lead.
"Okay, now tell them that I'm going to walk out of here and you four are going to be my shields," Shadow ordered him. He was starting to feel slightly light-headed from the loss of blood.
Nodding and swallowing, Tails called out, "Shadow demands that he is going to walk out slowly with us... and we're his shields."
Outside, there was some excited mumbling, "We have to go now," Shadow said, "Before they bring in the hostage negotiators. Amy," he picked up the knife, "I promise I won't hurt you. But you're going to be walking in front of me."
"Wha-me? Forget it!" the pink hedgehog shouted at him, walking backwards, "I'm not standing in front of you, you psycho! I hope they shoot you to pieces!"
"Then I'll have to drag you, kicking and screaming," Shadow growled, "You will come with me. Now!"
Standing in-between them, Sonic spoke back, "You're not dragging anyone, Shadow! Amy... we need to do this if we're getting out of this alive. I won't let him hurt you; trust me."
Amy, standing back against the wall, replied, "Trust you? You… you brought him here!"
"No, he just broke me out," said Shadow, "I came here of my own free will. Now you're cornered. We can do this tidily, or it can get ugly." In truth he knew there was no reason for Amy to help him at all, for the soldiers only wanted him, but he couldn't think of any way to make her do as he said other than scaring her.
"Amy... they're after me, too. If you don't do this, those GUN guys are going to lock me up!" Sonic pleaded with Amy.
This stilled her, forcing her to think for a moment about her decision. If it came down to her beloved Sonic's wellbeing... it was far more tempting for her to help out. Sighing heavily and shuddering, Amy muttered, "Alright. But if you so much as touch me wrong..."
"I won't hurt you," Shadow said, "And you have Sonic to protect you from me if something goes wrong. But I may have to pretend to be rough," he turned to Tails, "You're walking at my side. And Sonic, walk behind me." With that, he wrapped his arm around Amy's neck, and pulled her back against him, resting the knife he held against her neck.
Amy shivered in Shadow's grasp, whimpering quietly as horrible memories of him returned to her in full strength, memories of his domination over her. For Sonic's sake, she didn't struggle, and it wouldn't require any effort to convince the GUN troops that this was real: she looked absolutely terrified. Sonic grimly stood behind the dark hedgehog, and Tails silently at his side. "Let's do this,” uttered Sonic.
Shadow stepped forward, pushing Amy forward as he did so. Memories of what he had done to her and how disgustingly good it had felt returned to him, and it took a great deal of effort not to feel her up.
They exited the apartment block, with Amy in front, and the negotiator spoke up at once, "Shadow the Hedgehog, there is no need to hurt-"
"Shut up and let me go right now, and they won't be hurt!" Shadow yelled. There were about twenty beads of red light moving over him and the others, but since he kept moving, they never spent long enough in one place to risk shooting just yet.
"I hope you know what you're doing,” Sonic commented behind his back.
Tails nodded slightly, moving along with the hedgehog, and added, "They can't shoot at us, so we should be alright... if we can get to my plane."
"You brought your plane?" Shadow shrugged and the knife moved against Amy's throat slightly, "Can we all fit in?"
"Amy can sit in the seat behind Tails,” Sonic spoke up, "You and me can stand up on the wings," the blue hedgehog grinned, knowing that anything that the little fox built could outperform GUN equipment.
"Are you crazy? We'll both be in full sight of the snipers!" Shadow asked him, furious, "And my shoulder's killing me..." he muttered.
"Hey, relax! Those snipers won't be a problem!" Tails said excitedly, pleased all of a sudden by this development, "I've been meaning to test this upgrade, anyway!"
"If you're lying, Sonic could be shot too," Shadow told him dangerously, "What sort of upgrade?"
"Magnetic repulsion shield!" the two-tailed fox told him, jumping once in the air, "Anything made of metal will be pushed away from the aircraft! I designed it to protect against attacks from Eggman!"
"Bet you never thought you'd be reduced to using it from attacks against GUN," Shadow sneered as they approached the plane, "Get in, and if you try to get away just remember I've got Amy here."
"Aren't we on the same side here?" the fox asked as he hopped into the cockpit and pulled on a pair of goggles.
Leaping onto the wing, Sonic replied, "I think we are..."
"He called them, remember?" Shadow swung Amy around in front of him, backing towards the plane. There were about twenty red dots on Amy now.
Tails flicked on the shield as Shadow and Amy got close to the plane. As soon as Amy was in the seat, GUN snipers opened fire on Shadow. Just as the young fox had predicted, the bullets slowed, stopped, and then were flung away from the aircraft, leaving Shadow without a scratch. Looking back towards the dark hedgehog, Tails smiled at him.
"Make for Mystic Ruins," Shadow ordered him, "You can drop me off there and forget about me."
"Alrighty. Hang on!" Tails responded, turning back around and revving up the plane. GUN snipers continued firing in frustration, confused and ignorant as to why their rounds weren't hitting the target. The plane took off into the air, and the jets kicked on, sending them rocketing into the distance. Sonic made faces at the troopers as they sped off.
"Will you stop that, Sonic?" Shadow growled at him, "Stop acting like this is a game! When we get to Mystic Ruins you can forget about me! Forever!"
Instead, Sonic started directing his faces at Shadow. "I'm the Ultimate Lifeform! I'm so hardcore! I don't need anyone's help!" the blue hedgehog mocked playfully, "But look at my tortured soul. Who am I? Angst!"
"Hey! Stop that!" Shadow yelled at Sonic.
Laughing and sitting back on the wing, the blue hedgehog was having too much fun to stop. "Hey, look at my colour scheme! I'm just like Sonic... but badass!" he continued, "Hey, I can travel at the speed of sound and manipulate time, but isn't this tricycle cool?!"
Shadow growled, and made a face of his own, "Look at me!" he mimicked Sonic's voice, "I'm the Fastest Thing Alive! I'm cool, I'm hip, and I'm everybody's hero!" He made another face at Sonic, "And to top it off, I'm blue!"
Sonic laughed harder. "That's one cool shade of blue!" Sonic replied, "But I've got no time for that sissy stuff! I've got important business! I have to destroy the world... or wait, do I have to save it? I don't remember! MARIA!"
"Hey!" Shadow frowned, "Now that really isn't funny!" But he was enjoying himself too much to stop, "I'm 15 years old and my best friends include an eight year old genius, a 12 year old stalker, and a guy with high-functioning Autism!"
"I am not a stalker!" Amy shouted up at them both, but neither cared to respond.
"Well maybe if your pal didn't stare at that green rock all day..." Sonic spoke with a smirk, "But I alone can best all your friends! I am an independent, raving maniac who likes to destroy thing with Power! Unlimited Power! If only I could remember who the hell I am! Where is that DAMN fourth chaos emerald?!"
"Chilli dogs! If you don't like chilli dogs you must be some sort of demon from hell!" Shadow yelled back, "Also, I take credit for other people's efforts! Let's show that creep the real power of TEAMWORK!!"
Sonic rolled onto his back, clutching at his stomach and moaning, "Oh, the pain! Too... much... positive... energy! I require DARKNESS! And... huh?" Sonic blinked and looked up at the black and red hedgehog in horror. "Do I actually say that? UGH! You win, man! You win!" Sonic chuckled.
Shadow grinned, "I always win," he said smugly, and then hesitated, "Oh gods, I'm actually smiling?! And it's actually painful!" he rubbed his cheeks, "I never realised I was such a drag..."
"Hey, you're alright when you lighten up,” Sonic spoke back with a smile, "You just need to look at things more positively. Life's more fun that way."
Tails' voice reached their ears from the cockpit, "...Speed? Power? I'll beat you both in a trivia game!"
"Hah!" Shadow laughed, and mimicked Tails' voice, badly, "Look at all those Eggman's robots!"
An anguished cry came from the two-tailed fox. "I'm at the controls of this thing! Remember that!" His older, blue friend cracked up. For the first time in a long time, things didn't seem so depressing.
Shadow took time to look at his shoulder. It had stopped bleeding, but it hurt like hell, and he still didn't feel so great from the blood loss, "I still don't think you should stay with me, Sonic," he said, practically on reflex, "No, that's not a cue to be an annoying git."
"I've got nowhere better to be,” Sonic replied with a shrug, "And we're better off working together than separately. I want to stick with you."
"Hrmmm..." Shadow grumbled, clearly not happy about it, "You just never get a hint do you, Sonic? Even if it was carved on a rock and hammered repeatedly against your skull," he gestured to Amy and Tails, "I bet they don't want to hang around with me while I sort out what the hell's going on in my head."
"Well..." Sonic considered Shadow's words. Tails and Amy probably would like to get as far away as possible. "...then they can drop us both off in the ruins and fly somewhere else."
"Hrmmm..." Shadow grumbled again, but gave up, "How long is it going to take to get there?" he asked Tails.
“About another hour,” Tails told him.
"Geez..." Shadow sat down on the wing of the plane and clamped his hand over his shoulder. He glared at Amy, "And don't think I'm giving up the baby either. When it happens, I'll be there."
Amy glared up at him and then faced forward silently, arms over her chest.
Sonic lay down on the wing and relaxed as Tails confidently flew them towards the jungle.

Harley: Next chapter we start with the sex! Yeah! Consensual sex between Sonic and Shadow! It doesn’t get any gayer than that! Until we move on a couple of chapters and... hey, everybody who wants Shadow to become a raving lunatic again, wave your hands frantically in the air because you care!
