Brothers

A few days had passed and Dark still hadn’t returned home. Link kept telling Zelda and Sheik that he was ok, and it didn’t matter, but Sheik knew that Link was sad. He was slowly coming undone, and he didn’t want to talk about it.

Sheik would watch him during class, during rehearsal, during P.E. He could see the sadness in his eyes. His sudden lack of energy struck Sheik and lingered. Even Zelda seemed down, and she was Ms. Sunshine for four years in a row. When Link was sad, they were all sad.

”Dark is not here meaning we cannot have rehearsal this evening, so please do not show up tonight.

~Keeta”

”Again?!” Zelda yelled. She leaned against her 5 ft tall practice harp. She wheeled it all over school all day to only find out that orchestra rehearsal has yet again been cancelled.

”This is the second time this week…” Sheik growled pulling out a cigarette. “We can’t keep canceling rehearsal because Dark is too lazy and stupid to drag his sorry ass to-“

”Sheik, stop it.” Zelda bit silently shoving him. She pointed over at Link who leaned against the door with his mothers flute. He never did find the practice one.

His bright blue eyes were blank and dull. His hair was shaggy and grown out. He didn’t even take the time to iron his clothes, or tuck in his shirt.

He lifted his saddened eyes and looked over at the two. “It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. He is right anyway.” He shrugged and straightened himself up. He walked pass Sheik and Zelda and started heading down the dimly lighted cement path.

”Hey, wait Link. You don’t have to walk home alone!” Zelda shouted waving her hand. Link stopped and glanced over his shoulder.

”It’s alright. I am fine.” He continued walking.

”Sheik, go with him!” Zelda whispered aggressively.

”He said he is fine.”

”Sheik! He needs you more now than ever!”

”Well what do you want me to do? He won’t talk to me, I tried and things just got awkward..”

”Well if you care for him like you say you do, then you will deal with the awkwardness!” Sheik was about to respond, but he realized that he had nothing to say in his defense. She was right. He had to make Link feel safe. He has to prove to Link that no matter what he would always care for him, he would always love him.

”Alright. I’m going to get him to talk. This has gone far enough.”

~~~~~~~Link’s House~~~~~~~
”You didn’t have to walk me home Sheik.” Link shoved the key into the hole and unlocked the door. He took a few steps in and turned on the light.
”You know I have to Link.”
”Well, thanks I guess.” He leaned against the door.”Did..you want to come in?” He asked.
”Yea, I do.” Link wasn’t really expecting Sheik to say yes. He asked out of habit.
They walked into the room. Sheik went over to the couch and Link headed upstairs. Sheik assumed he was checking to see if Dark had come home yet, but when he came down stairs and saw Link’s blank expression he knew that his twin wasn’t there.
/Damn it Dark, why do you have to do this to him?/ Sheik thought to himself. Link came over to the couch and sat down slowly.
Link held his pendent in his hand and began to stroke it slowly, as if he were feeling around for comfort. Sheik couldn’t take it anymore. He didn’t want to see Link this way. So he finally decided to get him to talk.
”Alright Link, talk.” He said bluntly.
”What?”
”What happened? I want it all from the beginning.” Sheik demanded.
”Ok.”
”No, don’t give me that…Wait, you will?” Sheik paused and looked over at Link. He was shocked to hear him comply so easily.
”Yea.”
”Why the sudden change in mind?” He asked scooting closer to him.
”I figure if we are going to be together we shouldn’t keep secrets…even if that secret may change your view of me completely.” Link held himself.
”Link…”
”I won’t make you promise me to love me no matter what…but at least promise me that we can always be friends.”
”Link,” He lifted his blue eyes to meet his crimson ones. “There is nothing you can say to make me leave you.” Link wrapped his hands around Sheiks and pulled his hand away from his chin.
”Well you know that I…me and my brother, once lived in an orphanage?” He glanced over at Sheik to his he reaction.
”Yea.”
”Well, I will tell you how we ended up there… I…well Dark and I were 7. Things have never really been that great. But our mother always seemed to make the best out of any situation, however that day…
~~~Link P.O.V~~~

/”Link…Sweetie, upsie daisy time for school!” I heard my mother calling one morning. She did it every morning. I loved waking up to that sound. Dark however… It was always a chore to get him out of bed.

”Dark, you to, get up.” He didn’t move. I sat up in my bed and watched as mother shook him lightly. Sometimes it worked, but most of the time it didn’t. Her last resort was to plug his nose and cover his mouth. It would always make me laugh to see his face contort and watch him start kicking until he finally woke up. Dark was always so grumpy in the morning.

”Ok! I am up!” He would always raise his voice at mother, but she knew he wasn’t serious. Dark never did anything cruel towards our mother. Never. If anything he was far kinder than I was.

He would always walk with her to the store after hours to make sure nothing happened to her. He would offer to do any chore that required lifting or pulling. I was too weak to ever really help with hard labor around the house, but I always tried my best.

”Ok you guys, up and out. You are going to miss the bus!” The bus came at 7:20 every morning. It was always a rush. Mother would somehow always have breakfast prepared and our lunches packed and ready. She did so much for us, and yet she never got the respect she deserved from our father, Agahnim.

”Aeoina! Aeoina!” You could hear his voice from anywhere in the house. It was a sound that we all dread.

”Those kids better be on that bus that just pulled away. Aeoina!” We of course weren’t. There were a few times where we did miss the bus and that would always make our Father very angry.

He stomped down the stairs still in his pajamas, which were the clothes he wore the day before. He never seemed to take the time to button or zip his jeans, they would always be sliding off. So messy and unorganized. He wore that same white shirt with the blood-stain on the shoulder. Dark and I always wondered where it came from, but whenever we asked our mother she would say think nothing of it.

”You little runts are still here?! What does that mean then?” He yelled thrashing his hands about. Mother sort of held us close whenever he began to yell. She would never let him strike us, not if she had anything to do with it.

”I am sorry. It is my fault honey,” She lied. It wasn’t her fault. It was never her fault. It was our fault for being so lazy in the mornings. “I was late to getting up and in return they were late.”

”You stupid little bitch. Can’t ever seem to do a damn thing right?” He would always call mother names. It made me feel sick. And I knew it made Dark really angry, but there was little we could do.

”I’m sorry.” I always wanted to jump in and say ‘Don’t be sorry Mother, there is nothing for you to be sorry for.’ But I never did. Dark and I tried to runaway once with mother, but she told us we couldn’t run. She told us no matter where we go he will find us and bring us back. But I think it would have been better to have tried rather than just sit there and take the verbal abuse daily.

”Yea well, sorry ain’t gonna bring that damn school bus back now is it?” He grabbed her wrist and pulled her towards him. We were startled by the sudden lack of embrace by our mother.

”That means I have to go out of my way to take them to school. Right? Because you are too stupid to learn how to drive!” Mother wasn’t stupid. She went to driving school, but she just couldn’t seem to get the hang of operating a vehicle.

”That’s it right? You figure since I do all the goddamn driving you just get to sit around the house on your fat ass and do nothin’?”

”If I could drive them you know I would Agahnim.” Her fist clenched and with a tug she managed to pull herself from his grip. It was rare when mother fought back. But I guess for good reason, because whenever she did bad things would happen.

He raised his fist to strike her, but he then glanced at his watch. “You are damn lucky I gotta get to work.” He grabbed me and Dark by our wrist and began dragging us out the door. “When I get home there better be a damn good dinner on the table. And don’t think you are skippin’ out of this. I will get you tonight.”

My stomach would always hurt when he said things like that. Almost every night I could hear mother begging and screaming for him to stop, but to what we were never really sure. We didn’t want to know, But we were certain that it wasn’t good.

Usually when we get home from school dinner would be sitting on the table and our father would already be there half way through a 12 pack and shoveling food into his mouth, but that one evening he wasn’t at the table. Nothing was at the table. Mother was not in the kitchen ready to greet us. It was very very quite. A dead silence throughout the house. We didn’t know whether we should be relieved or worried.

”Where’s mom?” Dark asked walking around the counter. The oven was on, but when he checked inside there was nothing there. It looked as if mother was getting ready to start dinner, she just never got around to it.

”Let’s go find Mom Link.” He grabbed my wrist lightly and tugged me through the house. We checked out room, the bathroom downstairs then upstairs. We then heard a faint murmuring coming from our parent’s bedroom. We approached it and I was about to knock, but Dark held my hand and shook his head no. He placed his ear to the door and I did the same.

They were talking so quietly which is rare for them. Father would usually bellow at the top of his lungs, but he sounded calm.

”….asked of you was to have dinner ready. That’s all. I didn’t want you to build me a nuclear bomb, I didn’t want you to become president, I didn’t ask you to join the army. Just…on the…table.”

”I did have dinner ready, but I dropped the roast and had to go out to the store to get another one.”

”Well /dear/ whose fault is that?”

”I’m sorry.” I hated hearing mother apologize for something that wasn’t her fault. Agahnim never accepted her apologies anyway.

”You are always fucking sorry! Stop being sorry and just do something right!” His voice began to rise. We knew it was coming sooner or later, but we didn’t expect what happened next.

”I do the best I can under these conditions Agahnim! I take care of the kids, I clean up after them and you… I keep the house spotless and wash your clothes and put breakfast lunch and dinner on the table for you. I do everything!” She sounded angry. Mother never sounded angry, never. There was a feeling of power and strength that went through my body. To hear my mother, the most humble person I had ever known, to finally stand up to that jerk… I was proud.

I looked over at Dark to see if he was as happy as I was, but he kept his head pressed against the door with a frown.

”And while I am at it, I want you to keep your hands off of my children! If you so much as look at them wrong I will call the police and leave you. I will take my children and leave!”

”They are my goddamn kids to you know.”

”That doesn’t give you the right to touch them you monster!”

Touch us? Our father had never touched us, or me rather. Dark however, I am not sure. I saw his expression change to anger quickly, but he continued to listen.

”Monster,” his voice lowered. He was back to talking in a normal voice. “You think I am a monster?”

There was again a brief silence. It was so quite that I could hear my heartbeat and my brothers breathing. We then heard what sounded like metal cracking against something hard and then a thud. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but Dark was startled and physically jumped back. I pulled my head away from the door and Dark held up his hand for me to sit still. He placed his ear to the door once again as if he were trying to push himself through. Just then the door was pulled open and he flew forward onto Agahnim’s feet.

I was scared. Very scared. The anger in fathers…I mean, Agahnim’s eyes had never been so strong. He kicked Dark with such force that he flew into the wall knocking him unconscious. I scrambled to my feet and looked past him to see mother on the ground, in a pool of her own blood. I felt as if my heart stopped. I looked at the man who had blood smeared across his face, probably from his hands, which were also covered in blood.

”You stupid little fucks!” He yelled. I panicked and made the mistake of trying to run but he grabbed me by my neck, turned me to where I faced him and shoved me against the wall. I have never seen eyes filled with so much anger. He wasn’t holding me tight enough to cut off my air completely, but I still had difficulties in breathing because I was scared.

I glanced over at Dark who still wasn’t moving and again looked passed my father at mother. I suddenly felt like I was alone. I felt like my life was taken away from him, my mother and my brother! I had nothing but this monster who was also known as my father. I wanted to hurt him. There was a faint urge to attack. To fight, not struggle but fight! To avenge my mother and my brother. To stand up to this monster who took away the most important things to me…but, I couldn’t. I was too weak. I was too scared. I was a coward.

”No one here Link. Mother isn’t here to protect you from me anymore.” He glanced over at Dark and chuckled lightly. “Damn, there were a few things that I wanted to do with him too, but I guess you will just have to get twice the amount.”

Being so young, it didn’t register what he meant until he began taking off my shirt. He didn’t take the time to unbutton my school shirt, just ripped it off and began to touch my chest.

I felt sick. The way he touched me; I wanted to vomit. He started to undo my pants, and I closed my eyes tightly. But then I heard a voice, strong but quivering.

”Leave my little brother alone you sick fuck!” My eyes shot over to my brother. He slowly rose to his feet using the wall for support. I suddenly felt the pressure release from my throat and I fell to the ground. I was shaken up a bit, but I wasn’t hurt.

”Well good. You ain’t dead after all.”

”You killed her! You killed my mother!” I looked over at Dark. I could tell he was trying not to cry, but a few tears began to leak from his raged filled eyes.

”She never did anything to you! She was perfect! And you killed her! You monster! I hate you! I hate-“ Before he could finish his sentence our father lunged at him. He moved so quickly that Dark yelped when he was suddenly slammed into the wall.

”Heh, stupid kid.,” He started. “If you were smart you would have stayed down, but it looks like you will be getting both yours and your brothers treatment.”

”I don’t care what you do to me, but don’t you dare hurt him!” He glanced over at me then back at the man.

”Fine.” He smashed his fist into Darks face repeatedly. I couldn’t stand to watch. The sound of his fist pounding into his skull is a sound I can never forget.

It felt like it went on forever. Punch after punch, it sounded like he wasn’t going to stop until I finally heard an unfamiliar sound. It sounded like sobbing. It was Dark. Dark was crying. I looked up and saw his bloody face mixed with tears, and our father only seemed to laugh.

”Link, go to your room.” He said with half a smile across his face. He didn’t even look at me. He still had his hand wrapped around Darks neck, and it didn’t look like he was going to let him go for a while.

I was hesitant. I knew I was too much afraid to actually do anything, but not even I, a coward, could just cold-heartedly ignore my bloody brother. To leave him alone in the hands of that monster, but when I was about to speak Dark spoke before me.

”Just do what he says Link.” At that point I realized that the best thing to do was comply. I looked at them, and at my mother once again and ran into my room.
