I do not own The Legend of Zelda game series, nor any of the characters from them. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Rivern and Illiena
A/N: Hey all! I'm back with another update! This one has no sex, but Link is finally 17! I figured I'd give a little backstory to Link's parents so I also gave them names and I hope you like them. the song sung is not mine, it is Nemo by Nightwish.
I forgot to add this when I first posted the chapter, so I'm adding it now. Both Shadow's name and the name of his horse have deep meaning for me. When I was little, one of my neighbours owned horses. The one was Shadow and he was the same colour as Epona, but he had no markings and loved to chew on my hair. The other horse was basically a black version of Epona and his name was Spritzer. Spritzer and Shadow were practically my best friends when I was little because I would sit by the fence that separated us and feed them clover that grew along the ditch, clover was a plant they loved to eat. There had been many times that I would get to ride Shadow and Spritzer, always making me so happy and whenever I'd visit them, I'd forget about everything around me and talk to them about anything. After a couple of years, my neighbour had moved and the horses left with her, but a friend of hers that also owned horses had moved in. Alexis, Patty, Obsidian, and Cally were great to have around and were great horses who still hold a place in my heart even now that this neighbour has also moved away, but I will always hold a deep place in my heart for Spritzer and Shadow since they were the first horses I ever met and the first ones I had ever ridden.

Pizzasnack: You can’t hide all the kittens from me, and if you do, I’ll hunt the puppies and bunnies next! Usually Dark Link is depicted as a golem since he’s usually a puppet made by Ganondorf, this time he isn’t killing Link. Ah yes that stalker of Link’s certainly loves to see his most intimate moments. It might be another chapter or two until the stalker is fully revealed. I had only skipped two years to make Link around 12-13, with Dark Link he was 14-15 and now he’s 17.
Chapter 8: Rivern and Illiena
The years seem to trickle by like water in a simple creek bringing its contents to the wide open sea. Ganondorf had allowed Link and Shadow to remain with him in the repaired castle of Hyrule, allowing both the Hylian and his golem to live as though they were princes. Link quickly became attached to Shadow as if he were his own brother, Ganondorf finding the boys curled up asleep in each others arms at night; they had also taken to calling the Gerudo king their father. With the move to Hyrule Castle, Link was in shock to see that the massive library of the amassed knowledge of their land had survived that dreadful night. No one had brought damage to the library and everyone was thankful for that much. Once Link and Shadow had taken sight of the horde of books and scrolls, they dove straight into the books.
It had taken a few months for Link to teach Shadow to speak Kokiri, a language that few knew. They would spend hours chatting in the forest tongue, laughing at their personal jokes; it made Ganondorf feel better, knowing that Link and the Triforce of Courage were no longer a threat to his plans. Link trusted him wholeheartedly and Zelda had still never been found, he was able to believe that she was dead after seven long years. Golden eyes watched the two young men, tearing through the books of the library with a thirst for knowledge that not even most scholars had; of course he cleared his throat to gain their attention. “Boys, be sure to begin packing your things soon; we leave for the territory of Ronue at first light of dawn. It will take a day’s journey so long as things go well and Lord Phyrus is expecting us.”

The horses trotted along the well worn path, all three travellers alert in case of bandits. Thieves were no true problem as all the men had talents of swordsmanship and a small bit of magic to be more than well protected; you couldn’t use sword skills or magic if your enemy catches you by surprise, correct? Link was distracted slightly as they followed along the set path before them, glancing up at the man he had come to admire, respect, and care for. “Father…you knew about the war that happened in Hyrule before I was born, right?”
The words nearly froze Ganondorf before he could answer the Hylian; he swallowed hard before nodding. “Yes. The Hylian war had begun more than two decades ago and I had joined up with the Hylians in order to fight their enemies, the Gerudo didn’t wish to join in the war and remained neutral, but they were outraged about their prince heading into battle.”
It wasn’t the complete truth, he fought on the side of the enemy, pretending to be with the Hylians in order to spy upon them.
“Then you may have known my father. I found the records of births within that time and I found my own record, it had the names of my parents; Rivern and Illiena. The record had the seal of Hyrule’s Royal Guard, meaning that they were connected to the Royal Family somehow…”
~The men sat around the simple crackling fire, each half dressed in their plain armour as soldiers. They were laughing and enjoying themselves for one final night before the battlefield became their homes. One of the young men was not of Hylian descent, turning away from the others to glance over at their captain, a quiet man with sandy blonde hair and the clearest blue eyes. “Captain Rivern, you don’t want to join in the thrill of battle?”
Rivern shook his head and sighed as his gaze met with starry sky and pale full moon; he certainly didn’t want to be going into battle, but he had to protect his family and country. “You men may think me as some old fellow for saying this, but I would much rather be at home by the fire watching my wife rock our newborn son to sleep. It frightens me to think that after this night, I may never return home to Illiena and Link.”
“Link? That’s a name that not many Hylian boys are given.”
He laughed, shaking his head and smiling at Ganondorf. “No…it was my grandfather’s name. Illi wanted to name him Nemo, Sheikah for warrior, but I was able to get her to agree to naming the boy Link. He was born a few months after the beautiful princess Zelda came into this world for the king and queen. There are times I’ll hear Illi’s beautiful voice singing that native Sheikah song about the warriors.” Rivern closed his eyes before he hummed a few bars and actually began to sing the song he mentioned.
“This is me for forever
One of the lost ones
The one without a name
Without an honest heart as compass
This is me for forever
One without a name
These lines the last endeavour
To find the missing lifeline
Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything
My flower, withered between
The pages two and three
The once and forever bloom gone with my sins
Walk the dark path
Sleep with angels
Call the past for help
Touch me with your love
And reveal to me my true name
Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything
Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
Oh how I wish to dream again
Once and for all
And all for once
Nemo my name forevermore
Nemo sailing home
Nemo letting go
Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart
Lost in the dark
For hope I'd give my everything
Oh how I wish
For soothing rain
Oh how I wish to dream again
Once and for all
And all for once
Nemo my name forevermore…”
As the song finished and drifted into the night sky, Rivern stood up from the campfire and headed off to the riverside; Ganondorf followed after him, watching the man older than him by a few simple years clean his face in the crystalline water. “You’re taking this hard…”
“It’s to protect my country and my family, if I didn’t come to battle and lead as one of the king’s Royal Guard, I wouldn’t have felt right to show my face in Hyrule.” Rivern flashed the Gerudo prince a smile, a blush slowly flaring up on the tanned cheeks of the younger man. “And even if I do die in battle, my son will know that his father died protecting the land and people he cared about.”
They sat at the edge of the river, merely watching the stars for the final night they would be able to see such peace for a while. Eventually Ganondorf broke the silence, “You said that your wife wanted to name your son a Sheikah name, is she one of them?”
“Sheikah? No. She was raised by an old Sheikah woman after her parents died of plague, she learned so much about the shadow folk and feels herself to be one. One of the other handmaidens to the queen is a Sheikah, and the princess’s nanny is also one of the shadow folk. I know that the queens Sheikah handmaiden had a son a few months before Link was born, Sheik was I believe what they named the boy, meaning simply Shadow.”
The two got up, heading back towards their comrades and the flickering light of fire they surrounded. As they walked, Rivern had glanced up at the sky. “The Sheikah believe that the stars are the spirits of those we‘ve lost in our lives, I look up there and wonder how many of those I knew are staring back down upon me…”~

‘Why had I never noticed how similar they looked? Link is identical to his father, even that smile…gods I remember that man so vividly…’ He was rattled, but he certainly couldn’t say anything to Link about what he truly knew.
“Father?” The words nearly forced the Gerudo king from his skin before he saw Link and Epona on one side of him, and Shadow and Spritzer on the other.
“Sorry…I was thinking back to the war. I may have known your true father, Link; the captain of my squad was Captain Rivern, a member of Hyrule’s Royal Guard. I am saddened that he died in battle after he had told us that he was fighting to protect his country, his wife and his newborn son, Link…”

As they had finally made their way into the territory of Ronue, Ganondorf had noticed the bridge out upon their trail, he reigned Faedrunil in, guiding the two beside him to follow suit. “We’ll set up camp at the river and make our way East, the trail there is much better to go through during the day and we will bypass the bridge.” They rode until they were a few miles from the bridge, dropping down by the river. They only had the thin blanket rolls with their saddles, expecting to travel for a day. Once the sun had set, they had brought out the meagre amount of food they had brought along. Amber coloured eyes watched as the two young men chattered in the forest language Link had taught Shadow rather quickly, he certainly wasn’t going to ask what they were talking about. He sighed, looking up at the starry sky and noticing how much it reminded him of that night so long ago with Rivern.

The song sounded so close, which surprised him to see Link seated close by singing it as he watched the stars. “Link…”
“Hm…?”
“How do you know that song?”
He smiled, rubbing the back of his neck as though he was embarrassed. “I stumbled on it while I was reading in the library, the song seemed familiar to me somehow even though it’s a Sheikah folk song.”

The tanned skin man merely continued looking up at the sky; he noticed a star twinkling at him before he smiled and merely said, “I see you Rivern…I’ll continue to take care of your son while you watch over him from up there…”
