Broken Promises

This chapter ended up being a little longer than I expected but I'm happy with it for the most part. I would've gone into deeper detail in certain parts but if I did, this story would turn into a novel so bear with it. :P It doesn't follow the plot as closely to the game as I would've liked but they don't call them FANFICTIONS for nothing.

Repetition is super: Don't own Kingdom Hearts, the characters or the quotes I use from the game. No Sueing Please! ^_^

Reminder(from the beginning of the story): You probably need to have played all of Kingdom Hearts and/or understand the story to the game to truly like this story!!!!

Warning: Much Angst Ahead!!!

Enjoy ^_^

Chapter 8-Broken Promises

Axel found himself accepting a sort of tranquility in Demyx's companionship. He dreamt of Roxas every night while wrapping his arms tightly in an imaginary embrace around the sleeping nobody next to him.

Axel found a sort of comfort in Demyx and even kept his eyes open now every time he fucked him into the mattress beneath them. Demyx's moans and sighs became Roxas through his glittering blue eyes.

Demyx's sadness melted away every time his lips met Axel's even though he knew it was only a vice. He washed away Axel's loneliness and made him smile...that was all that mattered to him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Number VIII...Number VIII!"

Axel's eyes darted from his pinned victim to the battle room door. Demyx squirmed beneath him in fear at the sound of the superior's voice out in the hall.

"Axel!...Stop!..." Demyx protested as Axel turned his attention back to his mission and ran his tongue over Demyx's cheek playfully. "...The superior is looking for you!!"

Axel smiled devilishly and bit down on Demyx's neck. He pressed his hips into the blushing blonde beneath him, causing him to sigh and continue to struggle.

"Number VIII!" The superior's voice boomed throughout the room in anger, causing Demyx to finally push Axel off of him. "...I will not have any further insubordination!"

Xemnas wrinkled his nose in disgust as Demyx stumbled to his feet, zipping up his coat quickly and retrieving his sitar from the floor, next to Axel's chakrams.

Axel rolled his eyes and climbed to his feet, shaking the water from his wild spikes. Xemnas stepped backwards as droplets of water splashed against the leather of his coat.

Axel grinned at his superior, his coat still unzipped and a small bruise formed on his neck, furthering his defiance to any sort of professionalism.

Xemnas sighed "...Number VIII, I have a mission for you..."

"Alright! Time to burn through the competition!" The redhead's voice full of excitement at the idea of shredding through his enemies.

"...No Number VIII...We have found Number XIII..."

Axel's smiled suddenly faded and the thudding in his chest raced at the sound of his lost love's title. His gaze shot to Demyx, who was standing nearby, an expression of sudden disappointment on his face.

"Wh...Where?" Axel asked nervously as he turned back to face his superior.

"...He was captured by a man named Ansem, my teacher and a fool, who hopes to awaken the key blade wielder's power by bringing him together with number XIII."

Xemnas studied Axel's shocked and contemplative expression and continued. "Kingdom Hearts is nearly complete. With the power of the key blade, we can be whole and rid ourselves of the traitors...Ansem has been hidden where he has created a mirror image of the world in a computer and placed number XIII for 'safe keeping' until the key blade wielder awakens...We need you to go to him and bring him back."

Axel swallowed hard, remembering the smell of Roxas' skin, the electricity in his touch and the soothing sound of his voice. "...Why me?..."

"Well...He may not remember you number VIII...or the Organization at all. He has been there for sometime now and his memories have faded...you seemed to have...a deep connection to him. So, jog his memory."

Xemnas did not even wait for a response before retreating, knowing that Axel would comply. The redhead stood there in disbelief and turned towards Demyx.

"Demyx...Roxas...he's..."

Demyx's non-existent heart felt as if it was sinking as he approached Axel, wrapping his arms around him.

"...ssshhh...Axel, I knew this day would come..." he whispered into the redhead's ear before placing a soft kiss against his cheek.

"I'm...sorry Demyx..." Axel pulled Demyx from his embrace and stared into his eyes. Blue sapphire oceans reminding him it was time to bring Roxas back.

"...He's waiting for you man!...Go get out of here!" Demyx shook off his sadness and pressed his lips to his fellow nobody one last time before he left.

Axel sighed and smiled at Demyx, wondering how he maintained that optimism through his whole existence. He opened a portal before him as he straightened his coat and turned to smile softly at Demyx one last time before disappearing into the darkness.

Demyx sighed and sighed sadly. "I...love you..." he whispered to himself as Axel's portal melted into the floor.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It was night. The moon cast a soft glow over the town as stars glittered above. Axel walked slowly through the streets, marveling at the false reality around him. He raised his hand, sending a flurry of assassin nobodies to lurk through the night, assuring that his mission would go uninterrupted.

He felt Roxas. Axel felt himself drawn to a window above the streets and smiled, knowing his love was close. He stepped through a portal into a bedroom, cluttered with books, clothing and other belongings, not truly belonging to Roxas. The redhead looked around the room, sneering, and his expression softened as he peered toward the bed. The figure of Roxas lay curled up on top of the sheets, sleeping uncomfortably.

Axel approached him quietly, taking extra care not to be heard. He sat down gently next to Roxas, watching him sleep. His eyes were squeezed shut and his breathing irregular as he obviously fights with the dreams wracking his rest. Axel's lips part in disbelief as his eyes finally laid on his lover after so long. He didn't even care about his mission at this point. He was just happy to be in Roxas' presence again.

Frowning at Roxas' discomfort, Axel sighed and pulled his glove off, tracing his fingers down the blonde's soft face. His skin was clammy from restless sleep and cool to the touch. Roxas' expression suddenly became more relaxed as Axel laced his fingers gently through his hair. His sleep became more restful and his skin warmed as Axel continued to touch and prove to himself that this is real.

Axel thought of waking him but suddenly remembered Xemnas words...[He may not remember you...]. He frowned and lay down next to Roxas, pulling him against his chest. He reached over and wrapped his lover in a nearby blanket before burying his face against his neck and hair, falling into a light sleep...savoring this moment.

~*~*~*~*~

Axel squinted and his eyes suddenly shot open at the rush of light pouring in through the window. He had never awoken to the rising sun before and was shocked at the warmth of the morning. He shielded his face from the blinding light and gazed down at Roxas. He quickly and quietly lifted himself off the bed as he felt the blonde stir in his sleep. He would be awake any minute now. Axel bent down and pressed his lips to love's cheek before backing away quickly and disappearing as Roxas reaches up and touches his face.

Roxas stretched out his limbs and sighed as he slowly opened his eyes. He felt an obvious warmth next to him in the empty bed and rolled over, inhaling a strangely familiar scent. He could not place it but it made him smile and think to himself...[This is the most restful sleep I've had all summer...I wonder why...].

[Fall must be coming...] Roxas thought as the smell reminded him of a fire burning in the cool air and sweet cinnamon. He was suddenly ripped from his thoughts as he remembered...[The struggled tournament is today!! I better get going!]. Roxas rolled out of bed and quickly dressed himself, running down the stairs and out the door, into the warm morning.

~*~*~*~*~*~

The struggle tournament had been going surprisingly well for Roxas. His friend, Hayner had made a promise to him that they would split the prize if one of them won. He battled against his friend, enemies and other opposing forces, defeating the competition without even breaking a sweat. Fighting seemed to become a natural skill he had found since he started practicing for the tournament. He slashed through his opponents and as his weapon came down, suddenly it froze in mid-air above his current opposition. His eyes widened...[Not again!]. Strange occurrences had been happening to Roxas for the past few days of his summer vacation. He furrowed his brow and turned, staring at the frozen crowd around him. The sound of clapping startled him and he reeled around, laying his eyes on a figure dressed in black, a hood covering his face.

"Alright...Roxas...fight fight fight!" The man cheered on, approaching Roxas slowly, hoping to take a friendly stab at jogging his memory.

Roxas tilted his head in confusion. The man's voice was cool and had a familiar air to it but he could not place it.

"You really don't remember?...It's me...you know, Axel." The man stated smoothly as he removed his hood, grinning at Roxas. His red hair accenting his blazing green eyes as he watched the blonde's confused expression worsen.

"Axel?" Roxas continued to stare at Axel and his eyes widened.

"Heh, talk about blank with a capital B!...This world...it was created by him right? So we don't have time for a Q and A...you're coming with me, conscious or not!...then you'll hear the story!" Axel explained as he summoned his chakrams into his grip, smiling mischievously at Roxas.

Roxas backed away in fear at the sight of the flames igniting around the redhead. "What's going on?" He shakily demanded.

Axel frowned as he realized Roxas really did not remember the love they once had, the touch of his skin or even his face. He was determined to convince Roxas to come back, even if it was by force. He raised his chakram to strike, but not to injure the blonde and the air around them suddenly became distorted and blurred.

"Uh oh!" Axel's voice mildly panicked and worried as a figure appeared before them. A man with his face shrouded in red and flowing robes stood and glared at Axel.

"This man speaks nonsense Roxas!" He called out sternly.

"Roxas! Don't let him deceive you! Listen to me!" Axel pleaded as Roxas' gaze shot between him and the mysterious man, completely confused.

"Roxas!" The man shouted again, trying to distract Roxas from the obvious truth.

"Roxas...Please!" Axel called out one last time before darkness overcame him.

The man who must have been Ansem had done something to eject Axel from the world. He looked around and found himself in one of the alleys of the world that never was. He growled and ripped open a portal to the castle, stomping angrily through. He had never failed a mission before and this was the most important to him.

~*~*~*~*~

"Number VIII...how was your progress?" Xemnas stopped Axel's frustrated march through the halls.

Axel glared at his superior. "Well he ain't here is he!" He snapped as he continued, gripping the door handle to his chambers.

"Number VIII...he is to be destroyed if he refuses your advances...Kingdom hearts will go on without him...We have not come this far to be stopped now."

Axel flinched at the sound of his orders, remembering his promise to Roxas. [Roxas' Voice: Axel, would you destroy me if I turned my back on the Organization?] He refused to return his superior's gaze as he grinds his teeth, slamming the door and pacing around the room. [I could never destroy you Roxas...]

Demyx heard the commotion in the halls and emerged from his chamber towards Axel's hiding place. He swallowed hard as he smelled something burning from inside, knowing Axel was truly angry. Opening the door, he gasped slightly as he saw the redhead, torching his own bed. The flames gave the entire room a violent glow as embers floated up into the air as if to escape the anger in which they were born from. Roxas was the only one to ever share Axel's bed with him and it was the only material possession he owned that reminded him of his lover.

"Axel!" Demyx cried out as the redhead thrust his chakram into Roxas' pillow, causing delicate feathers to fly like angels towards the heavens, only to be brought down by the flames of hell.

Axel turned and glared at Demyx. "What do you want?" he snapped as he pulled his chakram from the charred sheets, the flames dying down slightly as his attention turned towards the fearful nobody in the doorway.

"What happened man?" Demyx stammered as he entered the room, closing the door behind him and trying not to gag from the intoxicating smell of burning silk and feathers. Smoke rose from the dying fire and Axel abandoned his destruction, collapsing into a nearby chair to stare out the window, fogged by the burn attempting to escape the glass.

"He doesn't remember me Demyx...he doesn't even know who I am...He...promised he would never forget me..." Axel's voice became shaken as if his fiery rage had diminished with his element into the bed.

Demyx bit his lip nervously, unable to find words to comfort the redhead this time.

"I am ordered to destroy him if I can't bring him back...I won't do it...fuck Xemnas...fuck the Organization!" Axel's voice growling with frustration.

"I will help you Axel...in any way I can! I don't know what I'll do yet, but if there is anything to bring Roxas back, I will do it!" Demyx exclaimed, attempting to bring some hope into Axel's quest.

Axel smiled lightly at Demyx's enthusiasm to help, even though he had done enough. Demyx had been there for him since the moment Roxas left. He had given him a willing ear to listen in on Axel's ranting, a shoulder for him to cry on and a body to quench his loneliness. It was enough. Axel shook his head and curled up in the chair, closing his eyes and forcing himself to sleep. Demyx approached him and sat on the floor next to the chair. He reached up and traced his fingers over Axel's hand, noticing the intense heat still rising from him.

[If only you knew how much he loves you Roxas...]

A/N: Axel obviously has slept with Demyx but in Demyx's bed, not his own. I failed to mention that previously in the story. :P
