They rode for several hours, Crikton’s steed was evidently faster than the red raptor, so he sometimes had to wait up in order to continue, but their mounts began to show clear signs of tiredness, and they began going slower until it was of no use to put more pressure on them; they just walked.
‘’We should stop.’’ Zeyhan told his friend, looking at the other’s horse and then at his own companion; both tired, thirsty and hungry.
Crikton didn’t answer, he instead turned round and dismounted, falling bulkily to the dusty ground; his heavy armor chiming.
‘’So… We camp here or what?’’ Zeyhan wondered, getting off of his raptor and wandering just some meters away from the main road.
‘’Yeah…’’ Crikton said, observing his friend and then turning round to look for a better place to rest. They were just some miles away from the connection pass to Ashenvale , but their companions needed to rest or else they wouldn’t even make it a few more meters from there.
‘’Here seems fine.’’ Crikton spoke loudly so that Zeyhan could hear him; he strode vaguely from the main road towards some big rocks that served as some kind of shelter from the cold wind that chilled their bones and gave them Goosebumps. Zeyhan drew closer to his mate and sat on the sandy, dry ground. It felt hard; it felt cold, but thrilling. He had stayed outside and slept in the midst of nature only for three times in his life now; and he sure had liked the experience in spite of all the bad things that there were to yet discover. He searched in his pack for some water, which he drank eagerly before offering Crikton some, but the man denied it claiming that he had his in his own pack; so Zeyhan gave the rest to his raptor and Crikton’s silky black steed.
Both men waited for their mounts to be fast asleep before settling down themselves to rest. They wanted to make sure everything was fine between both animals so that nothing bad would happen in between them.
‘’We’d better leave everything on us; do not, by any means, take your armor off.’’
‘’I know’’ Zeyhan replied to Crikton’s demand. ‘’Someone could come this way so we must always be prepared.’’ He leaned himself against the hard, cold rock, and tried to close his eyes.
‘’Yeah.’’ The warrior did the same as the elf; he leaned beside him and rested his back and head against the big boulder. ‘’You can sleep first, I’ll keep watch.’’
‘’Sure you don’t want to sleep?’’
‘’Sure. Sleep.’’ Crikton said, and turned his head towards the main road, trying to keep himself awake.
The Paladin soon entered in a state of slumber, and his head tilted several times, unable to obtain a comfortable position in which his neck wouldn’t hurt. He murmured half asleep how ‘this rock was so annoyingly hard’ and how he was ‘never going to be able to get some decent rest like that’.
Crikton giggled at Zeyhan’s complaints, but kept watching for their surroundings, and once in a while glancing at their sleeping mounts just some meters away from them. They seemed to sleep peacefully, unlike Zeyhan, who couldn’t stop moving.
Asleep like he was but uncomfortable as well, his head tilted again but to his side, finding support on Crikton’s right shoulder. At the sudden discovery, his whole body accommodated towards this new, less-hard object. He began sliding down until his head rested on Crikton’s arm, and his body curled up; his legs against his chest. The man raised his arm and Zeyhan’s head shook in complaint, but then found a nicer and warmer pillow to make off of his friend’s legs. Crikton then settled his arm down again, somewhat hugging the elf over his shoulders. He felt inside of him a warmthness he had tried to avoid from the very beginning; but Zeyhan’s head so near his groin just made it impossible to ignore. A sudden unwanted arousal was what he needed the least in a moment like that, and he tried to swim away from his drowning thoughts… but Zeyhan’s head so near… So tempting… He moved his hand up the elf’s shoulders and down his neck, softly stroking his cheeks and forehead. He wanted him. So badly... His member twitched under his loincloth, but Crikton tried to ignore his stiffing erection, and moved his hand away from Zeyhan’s face, knowing that stroking the Paladin’s soft pale skin would only arouse him even more. He had promised himself not to make a move on his friend before he saw any signs of resistance and overcoming from the situation that he had been in; and he thought that it shouldn’t take him long now that he had finally told the story to someone else, relieving his thoughts.
They spent what was left of the night in that position, and waited for the sun to rise again in order to continue their trip north-west. Crikton had fallen asleep just minutes before the sunrise; his head hanging over Zeyhan’s head, his mouth slightly opened.
‘’Hey, wake up! You were supposed to watch over us!’’ Zeyhan shook him, worried for a split of a second that their mounts were gone.
Crikton shook suddenly and pushed the elf off of him.
‘’I’m sorry; I fell asleep. It was so quiet in here, not even a small animal went past by near us. Nothing…’’ He yawned, and then searched in his pack for water and food. He ate and drank quickly, standing up and bringing the rest to his horse.
‘’You should look for something to feed your raptor with, ‘’ he said, again worried about the beast observing him ‘’He doesn’t seem to want any of the bread I’m offering.’’
‘’You are right, I’ll go. I’ll be back in no time.’’ Zeyhan said as he walked off, rubbing his face, to find a boar or a smaller animal that he could use to feed his companion. It didn’t take him long to find an elderly boar just walking peacefully through the plains. A swift move of his hand, and he impaled the boar on his shiny sword; the heart of the bewildered animal stopped beating the second the sword went right through it. He caught the middle-sized, hairy animal from its back legs, and dragged him all the way up to his raptor, which at the sight of the freshly dead boar, pounced over him and began eating feverishly.
‘’There you go, happy now? He won’t jump on you unless you threaten him.’’ Zeyhan demanded, watching his raptor suck on the whitish bones.
‘’There, ok. I’m relieved now. We should get going or we will never reach Emerald Sanctuary.’’
‘’As you say so’’ Zeyhan answered, grabbing the rest of his things and setting them over his raptor, then waiting to mount on the beast whilst it finished devouring its meal; a puddle of blood formed round the bones and blood stains around Kalijh’s mouth. After the crimson animal was done eating, he mounted swiftly on top of him and directed his way to the main road once more; Crikton this time was at the back of him; his black horse just some meters away.
‘’We should be arriving the pass in less than three hours, by then we could make a stop and eat something.’’ Crikton said, the steed quickly catching up with the raptor’s sleepy pace.
‘’You bet we will’’ Zeyhan said smiling, and they continued with the trip under the dim sunrise light.
Crikton had been right, in less than three hours they arrived and crossed the connection on to Ashenvale, were the weather and the moisture in the air was completely different. The sudden change from a dry, cold plain where there was almost no vegetation at all, to a place where trees grew everywhere and the air was damp and slightly warmer surprised both men.
‘’It sure feels different in here’’ Crikton observed as their mounts began to slow down. ‘’Come, follow me up to Fallen sky Lake; we could fish for something in there.’’ He added in a rather cheerful mood.
‘’Fine, fish sounds nice.’’ Zeyhan answered, stiffing up in his raptor as they entered the woods that he had had so many nightmares with. This was it, the final last chance to confront with courage the thoughts that the hadn’t been able to deal with for the past two years; and he had his friend with him; the one and only person who knew of his secret, and the only one that Zeyhan knew that could help him out.
They reached the lake and dismounted, letting their mounts run free for a while at the lake’s shore. Crikton sat on a rock nearby the water and observed the fish swimming under it.
‘’So…’’ he spoke, half laughing at what he was going to say.’’ Do you have a rod or know how to catch a fish without one?
‘’You… don’t have a rod?’’ Zeyhan looked at the laughing man.
‘’No, of course I don’t! I was never keen to learning the fishing profession.’’
‘’Not even the basics?’’ Zeyhan laughed. ‘’Well I know, but it’ll take a while.’’ He said whilst pulling a piece of bread from his pack, and throwing crumbles on the water’s surface.
Both men waited patiently until the fish noticed the food on the surface and swam quickly to eat.
‘’There you go, now we just need to…’’ He said whilst leaning over the water, holding himself from Crikton’s shoulder. He extended a hand towards the fish slowly…
‘’You really think you will catch something like that?’’ Crikton began laughing his ass of at his friend.
Zeyhan said nothing, instead, he quickly dived his hand in the water, touching the slimy back of one of the fish.
‘’Dammit, shut it Crikton. You can catch your own fish then’’ Zeyhan said in frustration. ‘’I almost had one’’
Crikton just continued laughing at his friend.
‘’It seems fish are smarter than you, my friend.’’ He kept on laughing, and then, as the final laughers stopped shaking his body, he reached to grab something from his pack. ‘’You can use this to catch one if you please’’ He said, extending a long, sharp knife to his friend.
‘’This will do, then.’’ Zeyhan said as he threw more crumbles into the water and waited for the fish to come back.
