Does it hurt to know

Caboose was fine. It took two months for him to get back to his feet, but he was fine. Back to normal. Right, because everything in the canyon was so normal.

It took Doc much longer to squish his guilt.

He stared at the ceiling above his bed, arms crossed behind his head. He wouldn’t talk to anyone, he hated how

Caboose followed him around, thanking him for saving him. Caboose didn’t know anything!

He felt hands running down his chest. “Stop, O’Malley.”

He didn’t. He didn’t even answer. Doc shifted, but he knew that wouldn’t help. You can’t shake off someone that’s in your mind.

“O’Malley!”

The A.I. went lower, and Doc flipped over. It didn’t stop it, of course.

“Please stop. Not right now.” Doc whispered.

O’Malley retracted. Doc breathed a sigh of relief. He couldn’t do that, not right now.

The medic gripped his pillow to him, trying not to think about anything. He wanted to think without O’Malley hearing every thought for once.

/You brought me here./

Doc nodded. Every day it seemed like a worse and worse idea. He couldn’t do it anymore. What would happen next?

Someone was going to end up dead. Doc couldn’t have that over his head.

/There is one way./

Doc held his breath. Was O’Malley going to leave?

/I won’t leave, you fool./ he paused. /No matter what you do./

If he never left, then the only way to… Doc shook his head. No. No way. He wasn’t going to…

Doc retreated into his head. He stared at O’Malley tearfully. The A.I. didn’t say a word, didn’t move. Was he… scared? Doc ran up to him, throwing his arms around him. O’Malley returned the gesture, face burrowed in the crook between Doc’s shoulder and neck. Wet tears fell onto O’Malley’s shirt, but neither cared.

“I won’t leave.” O’Malley repeated.

Doc pulled back and looked at him. “Why would you even suggest that?”

“Because you wanted me to.”

Doc knew he spoke the truth. O’Malley always did.

“I want you.” O’Malley whispered.

Doc smiled weakly. “Then have me.”

They didn’t need anything else to be said. Doc didn’t know clothes could be discarded that quickly, that

O’Malley could push him to the ground that gently. He wasn’t sure of when they began, only aware of slick heat, of O’Malley’s mouth whispering words in his ear. He didn’t know what they were, what he said. He only knew when he had come, when he felt O’Malley slide from inside of him. He had never really felt empty when they had finished, more of a serene feeling of being complete. Today, though, he didn’t want it to stop. He didn’t want to go back to blue base.

“Stay here.” O’Malley draped an arm over Doc.

Doc curled against his chest. O’Malley held him as tight as he could, short of causing pain. He didn’t want to let go.
