chapter 7
Jill and Claire both leaned against he wall looking at Chris. “You know… Glad you took after your mom too. Someone has to keep this lug in line.” Jill cracked a small laugh. It sounded thin, but at least it was real.
Both looked up when Leon carried the girl up, setting her down on a bench.
“Yeah, when he wakes up we're putting him on a diet. Maybe have Becky force him to eat her vegetarian meals for a week.” Claire looked at the girl seeing she was still sleeping. “We'll take care of her Leon. Don't worry.”
“I'll try to hurry back.” Both nodded as Jill slid out of her jacket, rolling it up and gently placing it under Madison's head. The kid didn't wake.
Leon heard the voices as he neared the OR. They were still down the hall a little ways, so he knew he'd catch up to them before they got there.
“Do you ever shut up?” The irritated tone came from one of the officers that rounded the corner and came into view. He was an older man, somewhere in his mid forties judging from the silver that dusted his dark brown hair. The man's stance screamed out ‘Respect my Authority'. “No wonder you were transferred to this town.”
Leon couldn't help but chuckle. “Great… a rookie. Been there done that…”
“Eh… Its so damn small dis is like de firs' time Ah've been allowed on a fuckin' call.” The accent was thick, and sounded from the Deep South. The rookie looked like he was fresh out of high school. Leon could tell he had a chip on his shoulder. “An I ain't dat new.”
“Right.” Leon shook his head. “You two all they could send?” Leon would let the chip pass, since he had been there.
The other man just sighed. “So you must be Agent Kennedy? Yes, the force in town is rather… limited, most of the department's over at the house.”
The rookie blanched a little and crossed himself; he had seen the damage and hoped that no one had been alive inside.
Leon looked at the kid. “I have them ready for transport, when, the kid. I mean the nurse wakes; I'll personally take her down to the station. Have a feeling you guys will want to talk to her, she's relative of the family that was murdered.” He didn't want to add that he was glad she had stayed at the hospital at least. She would probably be dead as well.
The older man nodded. “Yes we will need to speak with her.”
“Fuckin A, I feel sorry for her ya know?” The crossed his arms over his chest. “So how dangerous are dese bastards?”
“One request though. Don't let the girl near the nurse. I have a feeling the kid's been hurt by her before. She's been trying to stay as far away from her as possible.” Leon thought a moment. “The red head's dangerous, as well as the nurse, but so far the doctor's been cooperative.” Leon got to the door letting them look in.
Cole carefully shielded her eyes, though there had been a moment of shock when she recognized one of them.
“Yeah gurls are dangerous.” The rookie sneered.
“Seth do for once in your life, try to act like a proper officer.” The older man sighed.
Cole glanced up trying to meet Wesker's eyes. It was clear she wanted out of the room, her eyes were completely black; luckily Leon's back was turned to the prisoners.
“Need help transporting them to the van?”
“Yes.” Wesker said after a moment. He kept his accent controlled. “The last thing we need right now is for one of them to run.”
‘Seth' laughed. “Yeah cuz ya know you'd die chasin after them ol' man.”
Leon nodded opening the door. “Hey now, he's higher rank. At least show a little respect for the old man.”
“You try working with him everyday,” Seth shrugged. “Come on ladies an doc. On yer feet dun try anythin' funny now.” He managed to bite back his natural accent.
“Thank you for the assistance Agent Kennedy.”
Beth stood. Cole stayed kneeling to help Birkin up. “Right… If I bruise I'm so suing your ass Kennedy.”
Wesker moved just right so the agent could finally see the last name that was on his uniform, ‘Weston'. “Yes, I am sure you will do just that miss, but right now you are possibly facing murder charges. I think a petty lawsuit is the least of your worries.”
Cole growled low, but she shut up. She knew there wouldn't be any charges, he was there, which meant she'd be free to go. “At least I didn't torture someone.” She hadn't meant to say it loudly.
Beth had heard it and scowled. “She was loving it.”
Birkin slowly stood with Cole. He looked a little Ruffled but at least he had cooled off. Weston took the doctor's arm. “I had no idea this was going to happen.”
Leon had grabbed Beth's arm tightly. “I was there, you didn't even give her a local. You were the only one enjoying it.”
Seth snorted. “She sounds like one of my ex's.” He took Cole's arm. “Dis way.” When Leon wasn't looking he glanced at her. He knew he looked odd with his hair blonde and slicked back out of his gray eyes, it had been Wesker's idea after all.
Cole bit back a comment having a feeling she knew whom ‘Seth' was talking about, after all they weren't supposed to know each other. She struggled against him keeping up the act.
Beth didn't say anything, she didn't recognize the two cops, but had a feeling she should keep her mouth shut.
The chief led the doctor with some care to the van. “I will want a full report of the incident if that is possible agent.” He was being respectful, but clearly didn't like the ‘Fed'.
“I should have it by the time I bring the girl to you.”
Cole growled keeping up her act.
“Eh shuddup.” Seth growled back at her. “Just hope dis one had her rabies shots.” Weston couldn't help but chuckle at the remark.
It took all of Cole's restraint not to stomp on Seth's foot. She also managed to bite back a glare Weston's way. Seeing the door she struggled again, at least putting up a good show of trying to get away.
“Thank you once again Agent, and I will be looking forward to your report.” Weston nodded to the man before loading the trio into the van. At least he had an excuse to wear his sunglasses, it was too damn bright out.
“Yeah as soon as she wakes up. I'll be taking her to my hotel for now. They have the number at the station.” Leon said calmly. Something about the pair didn't sit well, but he wasn't going to bitch, they were out of his hair.
He nodded. “But I will need your number as well. I'm sad to say the station's organization is a little lacking.” It was a small town so it made sense that the cops would be a little lax.
Seth took over the loading, muttering as he did so. He also triple checked to make sure everyone was secured, after slipping a key to the cuffs to Cole, before shutting the can doors. “Let's get the bitches to the pound.”
Leon chuckled. “Sounds like a small town at least.” He waited until the trio had been loaded up before he rattled off the phone number making a mental note to change hotels.
Cole growled; Steve was going to pay for calling her a bitch.
Several minutes passed within silence before Steve broke character actually giggling. “He actually locked you in the OR?” Fighting to control his laughter he managed to speak again. “That has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever seen anyone do eh? How many improvised weapons were at your fingertips?”
Cole sighed as she worked the cuffs freeing her wrists. “Too many to count. Believe me it was tempting.” She motioned for Birkin to turn around so she could free his wrists. “You're lucky I'm back here Steve, or I swear I'd rip your head off. I'm not a bitch.”
“It was part of the role that I gave him.” The voice of Weston had changed taking the refined edge of someone that was over educated.
Cole bit her lip sitting back. “Yes boss…” She stammered biting her lip.
The real Wesker spoke up, the perfectly accented voice kept calm. “It seems that it was the only accent that he can pull off well enough to hide the Canadian.”
William stayed quiet, rubbing his wrists to get circulation back.
Beth shook her head. She noticed Cole didn't move to free her and bit her lip a moment. “Let me guess… My job's done right? I did what you wanted…”
“Yes your job is done.” Wesker didn't even turn his eyes off the road.
Beth seemed to calm down a little. “So, the cuffs?”
Cole ignored her as she moved up to talk to Wesker and Steve. “Where are we going?”
“We are dropping the van off at the station then we're slipping out the back door and returning to headquarters. It's only a matter of time before everything falls into place.” Red eyes fell on her green ones from behind dark glasses.
Cole nodded. “Am I to take care of the loose ends then?” She smiled a little. “Or you going to let Steve play?”
“You've both done rather well.” Gloved fingers drummed the wheel. “But I'm thinking that this time Steve should be allowed to have some fun.”
Birkin shook his head, he hadn't liked Beth, but Steve's idea of fun was something that made the doctor's stomach churn.
Cole glanced at Birkin to see if he was okay. She had a feeling that when things went into action between Birkin and Wesker, she really wanted to be a few states away.
“Wait… We're done, so… you guys can let me out right? I'll disappear…” Beth stammered slightly.
“My Dear, Beth, you just had to torment Redfield you never had to torture that girl.” Wesker looked up in the rearview mirror, one hand pulled his glasses down so his red eyes were seen. “You went too far and I am afraid that your overzealous nature is going to cost you.” The eyes that looked back at Beth were the colors of hell, and showed no sympathy.
Cole's eyes went black a moment, the smile on her face matching the man's eyes. “What about me an' Birkin?”
Beth backed against the wall and whimpered seeing his eyes.
“All you have to do is keep her silent and controlled. I don't want to leave a mess.” He smirked. “I'm sure you can do that.”
Cole pouted a little. “But I like messy…”
Steve was grinning showing so many of his teeth and his fangs. “This is going to be fun eh?”
“Not in the van. We are taking her with us after all, this is borrowed.” Wesker pointed out. “So the two of you will have to wait.”
“Aww man!” Steve whined. It would have almost been cute, if the look in his eyes hadn't been one fighting blood lust.
Cole huffed. “Fine we'll wait.”
Beth whimpered low trying to make herself small.
William looked away from the woman and glared at the back of Wesker's seat. Everything about how he sat told the red headed BOW in the back that Birkin was pissed.
Claire was watching the clock. It was fifteen past. He had been ‘dead' for over an hour. The girl moaned slightly tossing slightly in her sleep.
Fingers twitched. The darkness that had over taken his world was starting to fade. A shudder ran through his body. Not long after that the first gasping breath tore it's way through his body.
The dead man was breathing.
Leon jumped when Chris took a breath, “Fuck… He's coming back.”
“I told you he'd be late.” Jill scrubbed at her eyes. “He's just like that.” She stood carefully.
Claire nodded. “Yeah… I should deck him for worrying me like that. Bastard…” She frowned a little, leaning against the wall.
Leon chuckled a little. “Yeah, Claire, wait until he's fully awake okay?”
“You guys have to shout?” Chris spoke low as he sat up. Blinking a few times he brought his hand up to shield the light. The room was a lot brighter than he remembered.
Madison's good hand fell from the bench she had been placed on. She gave another faint whimper, as if she was having a nightmare. “…No… please… don't…”
He turned to Madison before he slid off the gurney, standing and walking to her without a thought. Chris reached out as if to shake her shoulder and wake her, but held back. “Madi?” He kept his voice down not wanting to startle her. “Madi, wake up…” He looked over his shoulder, not really grasping he was doing the impossible yet. “How did we get up here?”
Claire sighed. “Leon said to bring you up here. We didn't want the cops finding you in case you woke up.”
Madison's eyes opened slightly. Seeing who was above her she cringed biting her lip, fear in her eyes.
“Madi?”
Leon moved closer. “Chris you're the one that hurt her hand in the first place. Let her wake up a little. Beth drugged her up pretty bad.” Leon moved to her side and Madison clung to him shivering a moment.
Chris blinked a moment, shocked, he couldn't remember hurting her.
Leon looked at her. “Madison, it's okay, he's not going to hurt you. He didn't mean to last time…”
Claire looked at Leon and the kid. “So Bro, who is she?” She figured she'd try to figure out what happened before she and Jill had gotten there.
“He… he's up… I didn't think he was that tall…” Madison was calming somewhat, and stayed curled up against Leon, her hand throbbing again now that she had sat up.
Chris sat down; he didn't even feel stiff. “This is Madison. She was taking care of me.” He lowered his head, it finally dawning on him. “I… it worked.”
“She's the one I talked to on the phone then…” Claire looked at the kid. “She's what? Eighteen?”
“Nineteen,” Madison responded. She looked at Chris again. “I… I'm sorry I freaked out…” She nodded slightly. “I… I'm glad that I didn't kill you…” She stayed near Leon catching Claire glaring at her.
“Yeah she's a good person Claire.” He tipped his head cracking his neck. “Feels like I've been asleep all day…” He muttered. His body still felt a little off.
Claire eased up catching a look from Leon. She felt guilty about making the younger woman cringe. “Sorry Chris, only about an hour and fifteen minutes.” She smiled a little. “You have to lay off the junk food Chris, you weigh a ton. Doesn't he Jill?”
“Two tons.” Jill hugged herself. “I think maybe it was bad because he was dead weight.”
Madison stayed near Leon, watching how Jill was acting. She lowered her head. “I… I am sorry… I had to give him the shot…” She shivered a little. “Not that it protected my brother and his kids…” Leon pulled her a little closer to him.
“It's okay Madison… We'll get back at them okay?”
Chris's blood ran cold. “What the hell happened?” Jill winced.
Madison didn't say anything; instead she curled up a little more. Tears filled her eyes.
“Apparently they took out the whole house…” Leon said holding Madison as she trembled. Chris sighed taking a deep breath. He had tried to keep her out of it. Now she paid for it. He wanted to tell her that it was okay, that everything would be okay.
Chris was about to speak up when scents assaulted him, one making him freeze.
“If… If I had gone home like you and Chris had wanted… I would have died with them…” She noticed how Chris had tensed. “W-what's wrong?” It was clear the woman was trying to keep calm.
Claire glanced at her brother and looked at Leon. “We should get them out of here.”
Chris sniffed the air. His eyes narrowed, the warm sharp spice reminded him of the man who had put him in the hospital in the first place. He needed to get his sister and Madison away from there. The man could hurt both of them. “We need to get moving.”
“We need… to stop so I can get something for my hand… Hurts again.”
The smell was old, over an hour old. Chris tried to pinpoint where it was coming from.
Jill blinked. “What the hell… Chris?” She had never seen the man act like that before.
Leon shifted slightly; the scent coming off his jacket had the spice. The younger man must have rubbed up against Wesker at some point.
Madison stayed close to Leon. “Chris… you're scaring me again…” She whispered remembering him saying the others were yelling, so she kept her voice down.
“Leon who have you been around in the last hour?” He was trying to remain calm, but the smell… he wanted to track it back to it's origin and kill it.
Leon thought a moment. “Beth, Barker, Cole and then two cops who came to take them away, Weston… and I didn't catch the other guy's name.” He glanced down worriedly at Madison's hand. “Chris, we should get out of here though. We need to get her to a safe house… maybe get a real doctor to look at her hand. It's pretty swollen.”
She pulled her hand back hiding behind Leon.
Chris nodded. “We need to get a doctor to look at her hand…” He grabbed Leon's jacket making Madison whimper and back up. “You… oh fuck! He was here!” He couldn't help but growl. “He's still toying with me… with us.” Chris let him go realizing what he had done.
“Who was?” Leon looked at Chris as Madison stayed back.
“Chris, knock it off, the kid's already freaked.” Claire moved between her brother and the pair. “Let's at least get her somewhere away from here before you two start anything.”
“What makes you think that I'm going to do anything? Wesker was here I, can smell his damned scent on Leon's coat.” He placed a hand over his mouth the moment the last word fell from his lips. Humans couldn't do that.
Madison whimpered slightly hearing the growl. It just reminded her of what she had done. Lowering her head she bit her lip.
“What do you mean?” It was Claire who spoke up after a moment. “Chris; can you really smell us?”
He nodded slowly. “I can.” Chris tipped his head back and closed his eyes; he could smell them and their fear. He knew he wasn't like them anymore.
The scent of fear was stronger on Madison, and only increased when she had heard that the woman who had molested her was free. She reached out with her good hand to Chris.
“Shit, the only person tall enough… I handed them over to him. Fuck!” Leon growled low fighting the urge to hit something.
“Chris…” She looked up at him, her violet eyes barely able to hide her fear. “I… You won't leave me behind will you, I… I don't want Beth hurting me again…” She trembled slightly, but it was clear the fear wasn't directed at him.
“She's as good as dead.” He shrugged. It wasn't that he'd kill her; Chris just knew how Wesker worked. “She was just one of his pawns.”
Madison nodded. “She won't do what she threatened then…” She bit her lip, her hand on his. “I… Don't leave me okay? Right now… I'm still your nurse right? I… I'll try to help as much as I can.”
He turned to her. “We're going to get your hand taken care of and then… Well it looks like you're under the protection of STARS.” His eyes misted slightly as he reached out, touching her face gently. “Madi, I'm so sorry you got involved in this mess.” He wanted to say more but didn't know exactly what to say. After all it was his fault her family was dead.
Leon glanced at the kid. “Once we get you out of town you're disappearing. Madison, you shouldn't have even gotten into this…” He glanced at Chris. “So, who we sending her to? It's going to be dangerous to keep her with us.”
Madison stood, moving around Claire and wrapping her good arm around Chris. “I... I'm not leaving his side until he has it under control… He… I know he hurt me but he didn't mean it. I know Chris didn't mean it…”
“I'm not going to let you stay in the line of danger.” Chris grimaced. “First her hand, then we contact Becca.” He touched her back lightly hoping to calm the kid.
Claire thought a moment. “Might work. Rebecca's with a medical team, I'm sure they could use her help.”
Madison shook her head. “I… No…”
“He's right you've been in danger too long. Chambers could keep an eye on you; you'll be safe. Chris wouldn't have to worry about you getting hurt again.
“I wouldn't to worry about being the one to hurt you.” Chris confessed still worried about having hurt her once already. “I need to find just how deeply the T-R Virus has affected me.”
She held his arm tighter. “I… I was careless…” She lowered her head. “If you guys can get me the equipment… I can try simple blood tests… I usually have to do blood work for the doctor. I can be careful… But can we go now… My hand's really throbbing,” She was trying to fight passing out again.
Claire looked at her again. “Chris, I think you caught another stray. Only other person I know who's that protective over you is me.”
“Well I need to get this stray to the vet.” Chris was looking at her hand. He could tell it was really damaged. “Madi, do you trust any of the staff at this hospital?” He asked rubbing her back a little.
She thought a moment and shook her head. “I… Not really… I mean… Security sucks, and the only other person that's not an ass is in Pediatrics… I, I don't want to go near the babies.”
It unnerved him on how he could see the veins bulging as blood pumped through it. Chris had seen her wince a little as she moved. “You're hand's broken.” His voice was flat. “I can tell just by the way it's swelling.”
Jill stood dusting herself off. “You need to get it set. Is there another hospital near here?”
“I know. I'll be fine. Pop a few painkillers and we can get out of here. I'll be fine until we can get somewhere else.”
Leon frowned trying to remember the area. “The nearest is a few hours away. Madison, you think you can hold out that long?”
The blonde gave a small nod, her head resting against Chris's arm.
Claire nodded with a sigh. “Fine then, let's get you something to numb the pain then get you out of here. The sooner we get you taken care of the better off my brother will feel. Right?”
Chris nodded. “We need to get you taken care of as soon as possible.”
Madison leaned more against Chris, her eyes started to close. “I… I'll be fine… Please… Can we get out of here?”
Leon nodded. “Chris, maybe you should carry her. Looks like she trusts you enough.”
“I'm glad she does Leon… But,” He swallowed. “If I did that to her wrist without meaning to. I don't want to hurt her. I need to know I have full control before I carry anyone.” Christopher Redfield was shaken to his core and didn't trust himself with anyone at the moment.
“I… I can walk. It's my arm that's broken, not my leg.” She leaned more against him.
“Come on Madison. Let's give him some space okay?” Jill saw the scared look on Chris's face and hoped she could help it fade a little.
Leon yelped moving as the girl started to fall forward, her eyes closing. He carefully eased her to the ground a moment. “Guess I'll carry her.” He brushed the hair out of her face and checked her pulse; she had just fainted.
“Amigo, you'll just drop her.” Carlos had finally made an appearance, his arm was in a sling, and one side of his face was all puffy and bruised. “Sorry I took so long.”
Claire looked at him as Leon scowled. “How'd you get so banged up?”
The girl was lighter than she looked, Leon had thought she was at least ninety pounds when he had first seen her, holding her, he had to change it, she was closer to eighty pounds, the scrubs hid it well. She whimpered low as her clothes pulled at the scabs they hid.
“Careful Leon, I think she's bleeding again.” Chris muttered.
Carlos hadn't heard what Chris said; he looked at the younger Redfield. “Well you remember that one redhead at the airport you swore was that Steve guy?”
Claire nodded. “Yeah… It was him, Carlos…” She chewed her lip a little.
“She doesn't have any…” Leon glanced down at the small woman in his arms. Sure enough there was a little blood seeping through her scrub top. “Madi, what else did that bitch do to you…” He really didn't expect an answer; he'd let her rest for now.
The South American ex-mercenary sighed. “Well I saw someone that matched the old pictures exactly right. Not aged a day Amiga.”
Claire nodded.
He frowned. “You wouldn't' believe who I saw that redhead speaking with. The man in the black shades.” He huffed. “They didn't see me, thankfully, but then I didn't see the luggage cart either… So, just got out of the ER. I swear Steve Burnside was with Wesker.” He frowned. “And if he's not older…”
Chris growled. “Then Wesker really did bring the kid back from the dead.” He looked down. “I'm sorry Claire.”
Leon couldn't help it; he chuckled. “And you have the nerve to say I fuck up Carlos? Thought you mercenary types were supposed to know their surroundings at all times?” He looked at Chris.
“Steve… No, he was dead. I… I know he was dead… I, I shot him myself… He begged me to; he didn't want to be a monster… Claire shook her head.
Chris took a slow deep breath. “I thought he was dead, but Wesker took his body. If Wesker lived through getting impaled by the tyrant then… Well what's to say Steve couldn't have been brought back from a gun shot.” The leader of STARS growled low.
“Ahh Leon I was a little distracted all right. But I thought the boss man was hurt badly?” Carlos had managed to bring up more important matters. “What have I missed?”
Madison whimpered in her sleep hearing Chris's growl. Leon shifted her slightly. “Yeah… Well he got better.” He started for the elevator. “We need to get her real medical attention okay? We'll fill you in once she's taken care of.”
Claire glanced at the others and nodded. “Leon's right, we take care of her first, then we'll talk.”
“So let me guess, back to the ER I came from?” He cursed in his native language not caring if any of them could keep up with his Spanish or not.
Leon looked at him, “You came from downstairs? If so no, Madison doesn't trust the staff here. Considering what's gone on… I tend to trust the kid on this one.”
“There are enough of us here to make sure no one hurts her again though. I doubt they have enough security to take us all on.” Claire looked at the girl's hand, not liking how swollen it was. “Sooner we get her hand dealt with the sooner she can start healing.”
“So we make sure no one does anything funny and then we split?” Carlos was making sure he was on the same page for once.
Chris nodded. The thought of someone else hurting the girl made him want to paint the walls red with blood, “And you're getting your wounds looked at.” He glanced at Carlos. “I can smell blood.”
Madison whimpered low when Leon moved. Her bad arm was against him and moved a little.
“Chris, we'll make sure she's safe, don't worry.” Claire touched her brother's arm. “We'll get her to Becky soon enough, then we'll figure out exactly what she put in you.” Claire had wanted to stay mad at the girl. She really did, but it was clear the kid cared about her brother.
“Put into him?” Carlos tipped his head. “What?” He took a step back. Just when things seemed normal, they were going crazy again. Carlos Oliviera usually didn't mind crazy, but when it involved Jill and her friends, usually meant a headache for him.
“Part of the long story okay?” Leon started for the elevator, wincing each time the petite blonde made a small whimper. He noted she didn't fully wake.
Chris was watching, having zoned out. He ground his teeth each time he heard her whimper. He didn't notice how closely Claire was watching him as he watched the girl. The older Redfield wasn't acting like himself.
“Chris? Earth to my brother… Come in please?” She waved her hand in front of his face. When he blinked she continued. “You know she'll be alright. You promised her she'd be taken care of.”
“I also said nothing was going to happen to her family.” He looked away, only to glance back over when the girl gave another whimper.
“You had no control over that…” Claire glanced at Madison. “You know give her darker hair and I'd almost swear Leon was carrying Becky.”
“Just another damned kid in this mess.” He held back from punching the wall near his sister, but it was clear on his face that he wanted to. “They murdered children. Toddlers…” He remembered how she had talked about the boys.
Claire bit her lip. She didn't know what to say. “Chris…”
Madison whimpered, almost as if in her sleep she could feel he was upset. “I… I got them involved… They were killed because of me…” She slowly opened her eyes, it was clear she was fighting screaming in pain.
“Madi, don't say that. Wesker doesn't give a damn about anyone's life.” Chris stepped up to Leon to try to calm the girl. “He kills whatever he thinks gets, in the way.”
“Yet he let you live? And for all we know… He gave us the way to make you walk again…” She hissed her eyes closing a moment. “Mr… Kennedy, please… put me down. You're hurting me more than breaking my arm…”
“He's playing some kind of fucking game.” He snarled, the sound even less human than his growl. “Maybe he's isn't as tired of me as I thought.”
The sound of a slap echoed in the elevator. Jill was glaring at him.
Leon set Madison carefully on her feet. The blond winced when Jill had slapped her patient. She saw that Claire had been about to do the same thing, but had held back. Instead, the younger Redfield stepped a little closer to the stranger. Madison regretted not having heard his name yet. She had a feeling he wasn't a match for Jill though.
“You idiot! Do you even hear the words that are coming out of your mouth?” Jill's tone bordered a shriek.
Even though Jill scared her, Madison moved the few steps away from Leon, placing herself between Chris and Jill. “Stop… please.” Tears filled her eyes as she held her hands out, trying to use herself as a shield for Chris.
Jill glared at the girl. Normally she would have had no problem just pushing someone aside to handle an issue with Chris, but the teary eyed waif had lost everything. “Madison move. This is between the idiot and me.”
Carlos raised a hand and opened his mouth like he was going to say something, but he dropped it when he caught the look in Jill's eyes.
“He's still my patient… I… I can't allow him to get hurt…” Madison whispered, violet eyes looking up at the brunette clearly trembling, but not moving. “And… I don't need a headache from you yelling at him in an elevator.”
Claire grabbed her good arm pulling her back knowing Jill's temper.
“Let go!” The teen struggled against her.
“Madison, you don't want Jill mad at you. She's worse than my brother…” Claire winced when the girl managed to elbow her in the stomach. “Please, let her get this out of her system.”
“Madison, Jill, Claire would you ladies get a hold of yourselves?” Chris asked, taking a deep breath as he did so. “I can almost taste the worry, rage and confusion and it's giving me a fucking headache.”
He needed some time to adapt to changes. But there were too many people around him at the moment, it was making his head spin.
Madison stopped fighting with Claire, realizing she wasn't going to win anyway. The younger Redfield rubbed her side. “Damn… I'd hate to really get into a cat fight with you girl.”
Jill wasn't moving. She had seen something in Chris's eyes. She was sure of it. And what she had seen had sent a chill down her spine.
We have other things to worry about. Madi's hand and then we need to find out what Wesker was doing in this little town in the middle of nowhere.”
“I told you, I could wait until we get out of town,” She didn't want to go to any of the operating rooms to be reminded of what Beth had done to her. She trembled slightly at the thought, which made her grasp her arm.
“We're not leaving you. But you're bleeding, and the bones need to be reset.” Chris rubbed his temples. “I can see them shift when you hold your wrist.” He knew it wasn't right. Most people wouldn't have eyes sharp enough, he knew it wasn't right, and the smell of blood was distracting him, making it harder to think. “Please Madi.”
“How do…” Her face reddened. “One of you will be in there with me right? I… I know she's gone but… Please, I don't want to be alone here… Not after what…” She looked at the floor not daring to look up, afraid that her eyes would betray her fear.
“We won't leave you alone.” That came from Jill. She really didn't want Chris getting any closer to Madi then he already was. But it was clear Chris wasn't going to leave her alone.
Leon and Claire both glanced at each other. Claire gently placed her hands on Madison's shoulders, making the girl jump. “I'll stay with her. I have a feeling you and my brother need to talk.” Claire glared at Jill.
“I don't know if that is a good idea.” Chris normally didn't avoid issues. “I just came back from the dead give it a rest will all of you?” He didn't want to think. Chris didn't feel right, it was like his mind was still his body wasn't. He was sure that it was going to pass, but it was an odd feeling.
Madison bit her lip. “I… I would rather Chris or Leon were with me…” Her face was still pink. “Just… because of what happened last time I was in an operating room.” She looked up. “Please?” She would have asked the other man but she didn't know him well enough.
“Leon maybe you should…” Chris looked at Madison, his eyes telling her he would if she wanted him to, it was just he didn't trust himself.
Leon looked at Madison. “That okay?”
The teen nodded carefully moving back to his side. He wrapped an arm over her shoulder and she stiffened slightly, but didn't protest. The elevator stopped at the main floor, she stayed quiet as they lead her out and towards the emergency room to get her a doctor.
Chris had retreated into his mind, just to try to organize his thoughts. He felt somehow disconnected and rubbed his arms as if to ward off a chill.
“We'll be right back.” Leon said as a doctor waved them into a room. Madison stayed at his side shivering slightly. “It's okay Madi, I'm not going anywhere.”
She nodded letting him usher her into the room after another glance back at Chris.
