Anniversary Day

Start of a new day



Tails groaned in pain when he felt another contraction coming and squeezed Knuckles hand with all his might. Knuckles didn’t wince at the pain but was impressed at how strong Tails had become. The doctor and nurses’ surrounded them trying to figure out what they should do.



“Since he is a fox, Sir. I suggest that maybe let nature take its toll.” Said one nurse.



“Maybe, but this is a boy fox. I think if nothing happens naturally then we will simply do a C-section.” Said the doctor, all the nurses’ agreed with him and stood by to see if nature would help them along or if they should let science do it, but with every passing minute went by Tails got worse and worse with the pain that he felt in his stomach. Knuckles could not bare to see his husband in such pain and asked the doctor to do something. Finally after what seemed like eternity to the couple was actually one hour to the staff of the hospital got to work to bring in the necessary items that they would need for the procedure.



“Sir I think you should stay outside, and we will call you when we are done.” Said another nurse escorting Knuckles to the door. Knuckles looked back to see his Koi in the table breathing with an oxygen mask. Knuckles mouthed ‘I love you’ and exited out the door. Once out the door Knuckles starred at the light bulb that turned on. Knuckles continued to look at the little bulb when he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned around to see Sonic giving him a worried expression. “Their doing a c-section on him.” Said the guardian into Sonics shoulder. Sonic held onto the guardian and patted his back.



“He will be okay. Tails is the strongest guy I know, he will pull through.” Said the blue hero pushing Knuckles back to look into his eyes, he had tears in his eyes with a worried expression. Sonic looked at the guardian with concern. "He will be okay, Knuckles." said Sonic holding the guardian.



"I know. I just can't help but worry. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to him. He..." chocked out Knuckles and started sobbing into Sonic's shoulder. Sonic just held him closer and hugged him tighter. "H-He my world." sobbed Knuckles.

"Doctor. There is a high risk of blood loss for the fox. Also the baby seems to be in distress." said one Nurse. The Doctor was washing his hands. As soon as he was done the Nurses helped him slip on his gloves.



"We need to get that baby out ASAP. If not the fox will die of blood loss and the baby may suffocate, and we will loose them both. We don't need that." said the Doctor going over to the operating table with the Nurses and looked down at the sleeping fox.

"Let's save some lives, Ladies." said the Doctor.

Thirty minutes into the surgery the Doctor and the nurses finally took out the baby from Tails womb, the nurses gasped at the sight they saw, but put it aside and tried to save the babies life as well as stop tails from bleeding.

"Doctor the babies breathing is irregular." said one Nurse. Without even turning around to look at her the Doctor answered her. "Try to stabalize him, STAT!" shouted the Doctor trying to get Tails's blood loss together.

The nurse turned back around and got the baby into a seperate room with a few other nurse's trying to save the baby who was not breathing.

Outside of the operating room Knuckles and Sonic still stood outside the operating room. They heard all the noise and chaos going on inside the room. Knuckles stood outside the door worried. Sonic saw him and held his hand. Knuckles looked into his eyes and frowned.



"He's okay." said Sonic looking back toward the door. Knuckles gave him a half hearted smile and looked at the door where his husband and child were at, hoping that the door would open and out would come a nurse with his new son or daughter. Knuckles sighed and shook his head and starred at the floor. Suddenly the doors swished open and out came the Doctor with his suit still on covered in blood. The Doctor lowered his mask with a sad frown. Knuckles knew bad news was coming at the sight of the doctor.



"Doctor?!" started Knuckles but was hushed by the Doctor raising his hands to stop him.

"I'm sorry! We lost him." said the Doctor. Knuckles starred at the Doctor. Tears started to swell in his eyes and crashed to the ground on his hands and knees, tears streaming freely. Sonic hugged Knuckles sobbing form, comforting the guardian. The Doctor looked down at the two on the floor, and continued. "Would you like to see him?" asked the Doctor. Sonic helped Knuckles off the floor and only Knuckles went into the operating room leaving Sonic in the hallway looking at the door with unshed tears.

Inside the room the Doctor lead him to a seperate room where the Nurse's who were gathered around an operating table. The Nurse's looked at the Doctor and the Guardian and moved aside for him to see. Knuckles approached the table and looked to see a small fox child on the bed. Knuckles eyes widened at the sight of his baby, he was a human child with orange fuzz for hair. He had fox ears and two tails just like his papa. Knuckles looked down at his child who was in a fetal position. Knuckles heart sank, he looked like he was only sleeping, but he knew better.



"He died while still inside, a still birth. The umbilical cord chocked him while he was inside. I'm sorry." said the Doctor and walking into another room leaving the door open waiting for the guardian to follow. Knuckles took one last look at the baby and followed the Doctor looking back at the nurse's blocking off his sight from his baby.



Walking into the next room he saw lying on the table was Tails. Knuckles rushed over to his husband and took his hand. He looked at the doctor.



"Is he?" asked Knuckles, the Doctor shaking his head in a negative.

"No, we almost did lose him but we managed to stop the blood flow. He will be alright, we want to keep him here till he gets better from blood loss." said the Doctor looking at Knuckles who kissed Tails on the head.

"He will wake up soon, you can talk to him. He can hear you." said the doctor walking out. Knuckles looked at the fox who was sleeping peacefully watching his chest rise and fall as he breathed. Knuckles sighed sitting in a chair next to the fox still holding his hand, Knuckles looking out the window.



"Knuckles." said a voice. Knuckles turned around to see Sonic and Shadow walk into the room. Knuckles still sat in his chair looking at the couple and letting his gaze travel to the fox who was asleep on the bed. Sonic walked up to the bed with Shadow behind him, his hands on Sonic's shoulder's.



"I'm sorry, Knux. The Doctor told us the news." said Sonic looking at Knuckles who didn't look up to meet his gaze. "I fell like I lost everything. But he is still here with me. I am thankful that he is still here with me." said Knuckles letting his thumb stroke the fox's ungloved hand. Sonic and Shadow just looked and listened not saying anything.



"I don't know how I am going to tell him that our baby is dead. I know he is not going to take it very well." said Knuckles letting his gaze go to the couple standing on the opposite side of the bed. Shadow let his hands fall to Sonic's sides and held his waist, and nuzzled his blue hero. Sonic gripped Shadow's hands and leaned into his touch.

"I know that if anything happened to Sonnikku I would go crazy the thought of almost losing him is unbearable. I can understand how you feel." said Shadow tightening his grip on the blue hero. Knuckles nodded his head to agree with Shadow as the two hero's looked into each other's eyes. Knuckles looked back at the fox watching him sleep. The fox's chest rose and fell as the young fox breathed in and out. Sonic and Shadow looked at the couple sadly and walked out of the room. Knuckles held Tails's hands and kissed his forehead.

"Don't you leave me too." said Knuckles stroking his thumb over Tails's hands and sat beside the bed. Knuckles stayed at his husband's side all night and eventually fell asleep sitting back in the chair keeping Tails and his hands intertwined.

Sonic looked at the door as he and Shadow walked down the hall. Sonic felt so bad for the Guardian of the Master Emerald. Shadow looked at the hero and brought his hand to his waist and brought the heggie closer to him. "It's not your fault Cream, you did your best." said Amy craddling the rabbit. Cream shock her head in a negative. "No, it wasn't good enough to save the baby!" Rouge patted the bunnies head as she dug her head deeper into the crock of her mothers neck. "Cream you are just a child, you did your best. Tails is alive at least." Cream didn't stop crying and the room still was silent except for the bunnies silent sobs.



"It's ok. Tails will be ok. He is a fighter just like Sonic and Knuckles. We all are here for them." said Charmy buzzing over to the three girls. Cream looked up at the bee and smiled a weak smile for him trying to stop her own flowing tears. Charmy smiled for her and landed on the ground next to her to pat her arm in reasurance. The room watched the two and got up from their spots where they sat.



"Well nothing more we can do here. the rest is up to Tails, and Knuckles is here with him. might as well head on home and come back in the morning, maybe by then something would've changed." said Vector looking at Espio who nodded and walked towards the door, Charmy buzzed over to their side and waved bye to everybody. Amy picked up Cream as she and Rouge headed towards the blue and dark hedgehogs.



"We are going to go home too. We will see you all tomorrow in the morning. We will be back to check up on Tails. How about you guys? Would you two like a ride home?" asked Amy holding the rabbit as she snuggled closer to her pink momma. Sonic sighed and looked at Shadow. " I want to stay here just in case something might happen." Shadow looked at Sonic and wrapped his arms around his waist and shock his head. "No you look tired, we should go home and get some sleep. We will come back in the morning to see how things are. It won't take us no more then twenty minutes to get here." Sonic nodded in agreement and headed out the door with the three girls and out to the parking lot.

Light shined through the window, shining on the guardian where he groaned. He took a deep breath and gazed at Tails with sleepy eyes; Tails was sitting up smiling at him tightening his grip on his hand. Knuckles took another deep breath and layed his head back down on the bed and closed his eyes. They then snapped open as he quickly sat up gazing at the fox. Knuckles sighed when Tails asked the question again.

"He didn't make it." Tails starred at Knuckles with no emotion and grabbed Knuckles hand and squeezed it a little getting the attention of the guardian to look at him. "Knuckles, if you are trying to make me mad..."



"I am not lying Kitsune. It was a still birth...the baby died because the lack of air, the umbilical cord cut off his air when he came down." said Knuckles rubbing the fox's hand looking at him with uncertainty. Tails continued to stare at his husband with no emotion, Knuckles was about to speak when he saw a tear run down Tails's cheek followed by another and another.



Knuckles pulled him into a hug but was surprised as he was roughly shoved back and stared at an angry Tails.

"No. Please. I don't want to lose you, too. I would never forgive myself. Don't leave, I'm sorry, so so sorry!" said Tails sobbing into Knuckles embrace. Knuckles patted Tails on the back and held onto him. "It's not your fault. I am sorry too. I love you. We can always try again." Tails looked up and smiled a weak smile and nodded.

Knuckles and Tails looked at the door and shouted for whoever was on the otherside to come in. Sonic and Shadow appeared closing the door behind them and walked to the bed where the two couple were still embraced.



"You feeling better, Tails?" asked Sonic. Tails moved out of the embrace and looked at the two hedgehogs and smiled laying back in the bed holding Knuckles's hand. "Okay."



"I guess you told him Knuckles?" Sonic looked at Knuckles hoping that he did tell him about their son. Knuckles nodded. "Yea, it's okay. We are going to try again." said Tails squeezing the echidnas hand. Knuckles looked at the fox and kissed his palm.

"I'm sorry Tails." said Sonic hugging the fox. Tails returned the embrace.

"It's ok, we will get through this. Although it will take some time." said Tails looking at Knuckles hoping he understood.



"Don't worry, Kitsune. We will take this slow." Knuckles smiled at the fox who leaned out of the hug with Sonic and kissed the echidna followed by another tender hug.



"How are you feeling today?" asked the Doctor who walked in after a very soft knick on the door that nobody in the room heard. "I'm ok."



"I assume that your husband told you the news?" asked the doctor walking closer to the bed. Tails lower lip shook with a nod and dove into Knuckles arms. Knuckles held the fox and looked at the doctor with daggers. The Doctor took a step back with his hands in defense and mouthed a 'Sorry.'



"Feeling better I see. Do you want to go home?" asked the Doctor receiving a nod from the fox.

"If you want to go home that's fine. I will get your papers and fill you in. First You might feel fatigue for the first few days and some depression which is expected. If you like I can perscribe some medicine if you think that the depression will get the better of you." said the doctor and recieved a 'No' from the Fox.



"Very well. If you will come with me, Sir." said the doctor looking at the Guardian. Knuckles got up and headed for the door looking back at the fox telling him that he would be right back. Tails nodded and a nurse came into the room handing him his things to get dressed and left the three in the room. Sonic and Shadow helped Tails take off the robe and put on his shoes and sat on the bed. Knuckles walked in the room with a little white paper in his hands. "What's that?" asked Shadow. "Pills to help Tails sleep." Knuckles walked up to the bed. "Ready to go?" asked Knuckles who recieved a nod.



"Rouge is in the waiting room. Rouge I am sure will take the two of you home." said Sonic. Knuckles nodded as the two couples headed to the waiting room where they saw Rouge sitting down reading a magazine, she looked up and put the magazine down and smiled at Tails.



"How are you doing, Tails?" Tails shrugged his shoulders and sighed. "I'll live." he said simply. Knuckles hugged his waist and looked at Rouge, she starred at him with a half smile. "Do you think that you can take us home Rouge?" asked Knuckles. She nodded and looked at the two hedgehog's asking if they needed a ride. They declined and said they were going to run home. With that everybody was out the door and gone.

"You are right. I don't think I could've harmed our child either if it did come down to that."
