Chapter 6

The great hall of Gnomeragan was abuzz with excitement. Soon, very soon, Thermaplugg would show his potential allies the power he had uncovered. Dark Iron Dwarves and representatives from the Venture Company filled the audience chamber, speculating amongst themselves what the device was capable of, how easy it would be to reproduce and whether or not Thermaplugg was just bat shit insane.

Silence fell over the assembly as the self proclaimed Lord of the City appeared in the center of the Hall, in his customary mech suit. Following behind him was a line of robots, most of whom were well armed and scanning the whole area for a threat. One, in the very center, was carrying a case, and everyone focused on it with baited breath.

Thermaplugg took his place in the center and waited for the box to be delivered at his feet. The small service bot had it between its hands and it chugged forward on its treads to finish its task. If it had any self awareness, it would likely be overwhelmed by the fact that all eyes were on it. As it was, it did its job without thought or feeling, and then waited by the device until another order was given.

“Welcome, my esteemed guests!” the Goblin said, stretching out the arms of his mech to punctuate himself, “today is a day that will be remembered, for today is the day when the balance of power on Azeroth, will be shifted FOREVER!”

There was an approving murmur in the crowd, everyone leaned forward waiting aching to see if what they had heard was true.

“In this box, lies the future. In this box, lies the most powerful force the world will ever see. More powerful than magic! More powerful than plagues! More powerful even then dragons! This device will lay waste to the cities of the Alliance and of the Horde! It will bring down the fury of the sun upon this land and burn all in its path! With this box, we will become the dominant force OF THE WORLD!”

The crowd got up and cheered, already swept up in the fury of his rhetoric. He held up his mechanical arms and indicated that there was more. Once they had settled down he continued.

“Nearby,” he said, “is Ironforge, the impregnable city. In one hour, it will be wiped from the map! My bots will enter the city, and detonate, and then we will see the greatest explosion the world has ever seen!”

The assembly positively erupted with cheers and chants of his name. Thermaplugg closed his eyes and allowed the feeling wash over him. Finally, he would become a ruler in his own right, the world would have to follow his vision. It was a feeling of pure bliss, that was interrupted by the slightest click.

He looked down and saw that the little carrier bot had opened the box and was already turning dials. The crowd had begun to notice, and the cheers and cries of triumph had softened into a frightening silence.

“Stop!” he screeched, but the bot didn't pay attention, it turned a final dial and a window popped open on the device, displaying the countdown clock. Set for thirty seconds, and already dropping.

There was a tiniest moment of horrified quiet, followed by the entire assemply of Dwarves and Goblins screaming for the doors. Thermaplugg stood frozen to the spot, staring at the countdown clock as it slowly, it seemed, made its way down to zero. Around him chaos ruled as everyone else tried to get as far away as possible, even if they knew rationally that there was no way they could make it. Rationality had given way to stark terror and instinct.

Three....

Thermaplugg swallowed hard as sweat began to drip in his eyes...

Two...

Someone tried to jump from the balcony seating, thinking they could escape more easily from the lower levels, only to find that the lower levels were too far down and he plummeted to his death.

One...

People toppled over one another and a few fist fights were breaking out.

Zero...

There was a loud pop that made Thermaplugg squeeze his eyes shut and flinch back out of pure instinct, but instead of an explosion, there was the sound of hissing. He opened his eyes and saw a small rocket had popped out of the device and its fuse had been lit. In a few seconds it shot up in the air, almost reaching the ceiling before beginning its descent and detonating. There was a loud bang which sounded over the panicked crowds and caused everyone to dive for the ground.

It was a red rose firework, that completely dissipated within a few seconds. Thermaplugg looked nervously at the device and saw that another compartment had opened, from which a telescopic pole was emerging. On it was a large piece of cloth that unfurled as it was raised. He turned and saw there was writing on it.

BANG!

YOU GO DEAD NOW!

It took him several long moments to realize that there was dead silence in the hall. He turned towards the crowd and saw that they had stopped their panic and we're staring, absolutely dumbstruck at him. Some were looking pretty pissed off too.

“Ding! Ding!”

“What the,” Deydis looked up from what he was doing at the strange bell sound. He unconsciously licked at some of the fluid on his mouth as he watched Fyina lazilly reach for her pack and pull out a small pocket watch, from which the sound was coming. She opened it and the ringing stopped, and then she closed it with a smile.

“We need to get moving soon,” she said and laid back smiling, “but enough time for you to finish up.” Her toe, which had been resting on his shoulder, stroked his ear teaasingly and he smiled before diving back in.
