The end comes all too soon.
The wedding went very well. He could hardly believe he was married. He didn’t think it would ever happen. He looked up at the roof of Slenga’s hut as Marri slept cuddled up to him. He stroked her braid as she slept on. His wife. His love. His soon to be widow. The thought pained him. Maybe this hadn’t been a good idea. Was it selfish to want to experience being her husband, even if for only a month? He sighed softly. Windhorn snored softly from the corner of the hut. He snorted and rolled over. At least Windhorn would be there for her. He could trust him to protect her.
Slenga and Nezzi were cuddled on the other side of the one room hut. Come morning they would have the hut to themselves again. His new wife, himself and Windhorn would head out again. He wondered where his one month would take him.
When morning came, they headed out. Traveling, exploring, battling the persistent alliance. He and Marri would often steal away at night and make love under the stars. Some how, making love to his wife was much better than making love to his girlfriend ever was. He hated that his month was drawing to a close.
“What do ya mean, ya ‘ave to go on a mission?” Marri asked him.
“My queen is sending me on a quest. It’s not one either of you can tag along for. This one must be done alone.” He said. “I’m sorry my love.”
“Where are you going?” Windhorn asked.
“Elwin Forest.” Eroth said.
“That’s alliance territory!” Windhorn said.
“There are ways to avoid detection.” Eroth said. “Try not to worry.”
“I don’ want ya ta go.” Marri said.
“I know my love. And I don’t wish to go either.” He said. “But my queen commands and I will obey. You two continue traveling. I’ll catch up when I’m done.” He was lying. He knew he’d never return. That was the point of being sent there. It was suicide. Or was it murder? He wasn’t honestly sure.
“But...” Marri started in protest.
“No buts my dear.” Eroth said. “Go on. You two have fun. I’ll be fine.”
“A..alright.” Marri said. Eroth gave her a long loving kiss. The last he’d ever have. Then departed. Marri watched him go, a feeling of unease settling in her stomach.
