Chapter 6 Bad Timing
The Following morning, Kai woke up and double checked all the things he was bringing. “Lets see clothes, uniform the weapons I can hold... I guess that’s it.” Kai said tying up the bag so his clothes don’t fall out. After double checking everything and having a small breakfast, Kai left his home to go walk around town. *I have some time before I have to meet up with Taishi Ci so I’ll go see what’s happening around town.* Kai thought as he made his way to the market.
The market was very busy for it being so early in the morning. Kai saw one of the guards and walked over to him. “Um… Excuse me, but why is the market so busy this early in the morning?” Kai asked. “All the people you see shopping are the soldiers from general Taishi Ci’s unit.” The guard replied. “Oh..Okay thanks.” Kai said, receiving a nod from the guard before continuing on his way.
At the palace Taishi Ci was going over the orders from Sun Jian. “Strange, that village usually doesn’t get any activity of this kind. It’s usually the villages out in the forested areas, so why would bandits be sighted in a village out in the open and so close to here?” Taishi Ci asked himself while putting away the scroll. “Well no use wondering we’ll find out when we get there, better go get ready we leave soon.” Taishi Ci said to himself as he entered his room.
Back at the marketplace, Kai was on his way back home. “Need to hurry and get home, its almost time to leave.” Kai said to himself as he turned at the last corner heading home. Upon arriving home, Kai went and got ready to go a lot faster than usual. “Man I need to hurry and meet up with Taishi Ci I’m already late.” Kai said as he quickly gathered his stuff and his twin rods that were given to him by Taishi Ci and took off.
Kai made his way to the front gate deep in thought on what he should do. *Okay I’m going to tell him, I just hope it goes well.* Kai thought as he arrived at the front gate. Taishi Ci was at the front gate waiting on his few remaining soldiers to arrive. *Something not right, I feel that something very bad is going to happen.* Taishi Ci thought as the few remaining soldiers arrived and Kai a few seconds later. Kai noticed the concerned look on Taishi Ci’s face and decided to go over and talk to him. “Is something wrong sir?” Kai asked snapping Taishi Ci out of his thoughts.
“What?...Oh, nothing’s wrong just going over the mission that’s all.” Taishi Ci said “Oh…Okay then.” Kai said before returning to the rest of the unit. *”That was a lie, you were thinking about Kai again.”* said the voice in Taishi Ci’s head. “*Well can you blame me for worrying about him? I feel that something’s going to happen and he’s going to be in the middle of it.*” Taishi Ci mentally replied, as he noticed one of his soldiers approach him.
“Sir, preparations are complete.” The soldier said, “Good, we will be leaving shortly.”Taishi Ci replied to the soldier who saluted (did they do that back then?) and took his place back within the unit. *I’ll talk to him when we reach the village.* Taishi Ci thought to himself as he made his way to the center in front of his troops.
--------15 min. later-------
Not much happen the first few miles, just the sounds of birds chirping, animals running around and the sound of the other soldiers talking amongst themselves. Kai kept to himself for most of the trip surveying the surrounding area as they marched to the village. *It’s way too quiet out here.* Kai thought to himself as he continued to survey the area. Taishi Ci turned and noticed Kai looking around. *He’s been surveying the area the whole way… Maybe I should see what’s wrong.* Taishi Ci thought as he began to make his way over to Kai.
“You look troubled, is something wrong?” Taishi Ci ask Kai, snapping him out of his thoughts. “Um…well it seem too quiet out here don’t you think? Aren’t there usually travelers and other people out here around this time of day?” Kai asked being a bit cautious of his surroundings. “Hmm…your right, keep surveying the area I’ll be right back.” Taishi Ci said as he turned around and headed back to the front. *Now I know something’s not right, if I didn’t know any better I’d say we walked right into a…* Suddenly bandits started to rush out from behind the trees and bushes. “AMBUSH!!!!!” one of the soldiers said as he grabbed his weapon.
Taishi Ci snapped out of his thoughts, drew his weapons and charged the oncoming enemy. Kai drew his weapons just as a bandit got near, but wasn’t able to strike as the bandit struck him from behind knocking him out cold.
