Prologue: Two in a Storm
Two figures struggled though winds that could easily toss them from the sheer cliff face along which they traveled. They huddled close, clinging to the flat wall above them and to each other, only able to look at where their next step would be in the blizzard that raged around them, threatening to also rip their ratty cloaks, hoods, and clothes from their bodies.
Both were surprised when they fell into a small crevice. Pushing back her hood, a girl with medium blond hair looked around with wide surprise blue eyes, her long ears twitching. "Dar, I think we found a travelers cave!" she said in breathless happiness to the boy sitting next to her. They could be no more than seventeen. The boy had also pushed back his hood, revealing short reddish-brown hair and equally blue eyes.
"Thanks, I can see that Sis." He said looking at the small hole in the cliff face that had the remains of a fire and discarded broken traveling gear laying about. His sister elbowed him sharply, hissing. "I'm sorry... I'll remember next time."
"We can never go back... If you screw it up for us in whatever lands we find beyond the Death Mountain Range we'll be hunted forever." She brushed back her long hair, her fingernails tinted blue by the cold, but revealing a gray sheen that would never leave her, no matter how she polished.
"I know Sar, I know," his voice was sad as he put an arm around her, his nails also an unusual gray. He put a hand on her chin and pulled her face towards his, their chapped lips meeting in love...
