Beyond the Light

Chap 7.


Riku was awoken by an awful dream. He saw Sora surrounded by darkness. The brunette was in a ball and was sobbing uncontrollably, Riku tried to alert Sora to his presence but the brunette seemed to not be able to see him. Then a voice spoke:

“ The boy cannot hear those who abandoned him”

The voice had accused Riku of abandoning Sora??! It infuriated Riku but at the same time troubled him. Did Sora feel abandoned? Had he already given up all hope and was consumed by complete darkness? He knew that Amir told him the journey to Avingale took a week but somehow Riku felt that a week was infinitely too long. Sora was in trouble! Did he really have time to sleep?

Riku decided the answer was no. He silently left the tent he was sharing with Zexion and took a sword he “borrowed” from the bazaar. He was going to find Sora if he died trying.

Roxas had been observing his counter-part for the last couple of days and was extremely worried. Sora seemed to have completely lost it. He walked around like a zombie and spent his days just staring out from the balcony. It was an extremely troubling sight especially since this was the same boy who at the age of 16 still believed in Santa Clause and whose favorite game was pretend fighting with wooden swords. Sora was an embodiment of an innocent child’s spirit and to have witnessed that spirit being completely destroyed made Roxas wish he could make Saix suffer as much as he made Sora suffer.

Roxas was a strong individual but wasn’t blind to the seeming hopelessness of their predicament; however, he’d been wondering for a while if the fact that Saix still existed meant that other Nobodies still existed… In particular he was wondering if a cocky red-haired one existed in this world. Sora’s Riku had failed them, but maybe his Axel wouldn’t.

Roxas summoned up an image in his mind… Axel. He was Roxas’ personification of hope, someone who seemed extremely carefree and defied all logic. He was convinced he was in love with Roxas, even when they both knew it was impossible for a being with no heart to feel that way. Roxas always had pretended like he didn’t care what Axel said or did but it was Axel who was the only one in his short-lived independent life as a Nobody. After he went back to Sora he was afraid Axel would leave him, but Axel kept watching over him. He was right beside him until his very last breath…

Roxas noticed Sora staring at him curiously. Duh, we’re the same person…Of course if I start bringing up our memories they’ll appear to Sora too, “You were thinking about Axel again? Do you really think he might be alive somewhere?”

It was surprising to hear Sora’s voice again. Roxas was happy that Sora had started talking again.

“Well, I was just thinking…Who knows? It’s normal to wish for someone who has always been there for you, like you and Riku.”

“Wherever he is I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten you, Roxas.” Roxas smiled at the thought, “Sora, you know it’s the same for you too. You’re not alone.”
