Chapter 4A

"So..." he asked nervously, "are we... together... now?"

Ash's green eyes widened, shocked at his frankness.

"I don't know..." she said, trying to hide her embarrassment.  "I know I said some stuff when I was in that chair... I meant all of it, every word, but..."

Chris smiled, feeling the same wavelength.  "There's just so much going on right now."

"Yeah," Ash replied, smiling sadly.  "Three of our friends are still missing and one of them turned out to be a gibbering psychopath...  right now I can't really think beyond tonight."

"That's cool...  I was just... trying to figure out if I needed to update my relationship status," he quipped, trying to save face.

Afraid she'd hurt him, Ashley lightly placed a hand on his shoulder.  "One thing I am sure of... I don't want you to leave me alone tonight," she said, her eyes thick with layers of meaning.
