The lil' ripper that could

The lone ripper slithered over the craggy and splintered rocks, carefully searching them for any sign of life. It had done the same yesterday, but it was looking again, just in case. It would never give up on its search for the remaining biomass.

The planet had already been stripped clean; the earth, the plants, and the animals and even the air were gone, yet the ripper did not give up. The hive fleet would not have left it there otherwise; it had to be the reason it was still here. Yet the Tyranids left only the wreckage of planets, they used all types of spores and creatures to strip them clean. And when they were sated and done with their mission, they would move into the vast reclamation pools. Their bodies would be broken down, leaving only raw biomass that would be absorbed into cavernous holds of the hive ships. From these materials, the next generation of fresh creatures would be born, ready to sink their claws into a new planet.

But something had gone wrong this time, this ripper had not made it back to the pool in time and had been left behind. Maybe it didn’t devour the biomass fast enough or had simply been forgotten, but all it knew was that it was alone now.

Yet, it still had a purpose, to find more biomass and return home to the hive fleet. So it continued its search, scouring the lifeless rock, hoping to find one forgotten nibble or fresh growth. There was a small bit of the creature that knew the futility of its actions; but those treacherous thoughts were ignored. It slowly lifted the rock up again and saw nothing. All it could do was hope that one day, the Hive fleet would return and let it go home.
