Ephraim's Vice, ch. 5
Sleep was supposed to alleviate worries, but when Ephraim woke up, feelings of guilt and uselessness washed over him. He couldn't even think of what he had done, couldn't think of seeing his sister. He had defiled her with his base lust, betrayed her love, degraded his father and the kingdom, and blackened his own soul, all in one vile act in the deep dark of the night, with sin and illicit desires corrupting his morale, filling him with passing pleasure to mask the disgusting evil of his wants. Ephraim sat up on the bed and covered his head with his arms. He was wretched. Why did he do those things? Why did he feel this way? How could he ever clean the stain of his deeds from his person?
He sat in silence, hugging his naked body that he should have sated with a maid or a willing troubador, better than through acts of perversion. Dull grey light came through the window, and a brisk scent from the rain outside wafted inside. Ephraim realized that if he didn't go to her, Eirika would come to see him. She would know, if not after waking during the night, then from the foul essence and taste that must still linger in her abused mouth. Perhaps she would alert their father first.
He could not bear it. Guilty and vile as he was, he did not want to bear responsibility, did not want to see the looks of disappointment and anger on the faces of his beloved family. All was quiet still, he had time yet. The notion shook him, and he rose up.
Clad in nondescript outdoors gear, Ephraim left his quarters, and gave a passing glance at Eirika's door before turning his gaze down. If she had woken up, had she been able to sleep after, or struck with shock? If she had slept, what nightmares had he caused his dear sister, whom he had so violated? Was she only just now waking up and realizing what had happened, what she might have seen? But Ephraim did not have the strength to see how she was, to face her in any condition. He was sorry for her, but his guilt drove him away. So he left.
