Catch me as I fall
Fires both sacred and profane - Chapter five
Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drives me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away
(Evanescence)
Turn around, this is the night
Now I need you more than ever
And if you’ll only hold me tight,
We’ll be holding on forever
And we’ll only be making it right
Cause we’ll never be wrong
Together we can take it to the end of the line
My love is like a shadow on you all of the time
I don’t know what to do
And I’m always in the dark
Every now and then
I think I’d better run away from you
before it’s too late
But every now and then
I know I must go where you lead me
I'll go with you through the gates of Hell
(Jim Steinman, Dance of the Vampires)
Gerde was completely exhausted when she left Gabriel's bedroom to visit the Smiths. Giving Gracie something so she could go to sleep and putting her in Gabriel's bed would have exhausted her after a night's sleep, not to mention a sleepless night. When the opera was finally scheduled to be performed she had done all the paperwork leading to its release on CD as well as a contract for a video to be filmed in the later run when everything had found its routine. Keeping busy, always busy had kept her alive after Wolfgang's death and she knew that this was the only way for her as well. She had typed the letters to the MET and La Scala and she'd send them out tomorrow. Tomorrow...always one day after the other to dull the pain. When she entered the Gasthof Mrs. Smith greeted her with an affectionate hug.
"Dear, come now, have a seat! Emil, go get her some tea! Do you want her to faint here?" Mrs. Smith pushed Gerde into a seat.
"Mrs. Smith...." Gerde began with a heavy heart. "Gracie returned home and told me everything..." When the tea was served by a very kind Emil she gulped most of it down immediately.
"Now, dear, don't "Mrs. Smith" me. Call me Meryl, dear." Mrs. Smith fussed over Gerde gently. The poor girl had been put through the wringer and there was nothing like being spoiled a little.
"Meryl, thank you. Well, as I was saying, Gracie came home and she was a mess. She tried not to let it show but...Gabriel's absence and his change....it wore her out." Gerde took another sip of her tea and cursed Werner for not helping Gracie sooner. And why did she have to make things so difficult when Grace arrived at Rittersberg? Shouldn't she of all people have seen the signs?
"I can only imagine, sugar pie. But there is nothing we can do now. It was Gabriel's choice and he chose von Glower and this new life." Her voice was steady, yet very sad.
"But Meryl, what if he hasn't yet...you know?" Gerde's stomach was in knots at the idea of Gabriel consuming human flesh. Yet it would happen sooner or later unless von Glower was stopped in time.
"I am sorry, dear, but Gabriel's beyond our influence now. We'll have to let fate decide."
"But we can't just give up like this! Wolfgang would never forgive me!" Gerde protested passionately. Passion was alien to her nature unless it involved Wolfgang and the legacy her beloved had ended his life for.
"Wolfgang? And ancestor?" Mrs. Smith was clearly intrigued.
"The sweetest man who ever lived. He was Gabriel's great-father's youngest brother. He was....."
Gerde began to tell Meryl about Wolfgang's struggles and the death of his baby son, the day when Wolfgang first called Gabriel, the dreadful week between life and death when Wolfgang left for Africa, Gabriel's arrival at Schloss Ritter, Wolfgang's final sacrifice.......just everything. Mrs. Smith listened to this young woman sharing her inner thoughts and torment with her and her heart went out to her. The poor dear was still young, yet life had struck her many blows. And now it seemed as if Wolfgang's death had been in vain. It was the only tragedy that could have made this shy and quiet woman so eager to ease her burden.

Before he could slip away again to leave him aching for what he'd wanted ever since laying his eyes on him the Baron answered Gabriel's endearment and plea with drawing him near into an embrace so different from the one back home at the Perlacher Forst. His grip was hard as iron and yet as tender as that of a lover and those magnificent blue eyes were scorching with desire. It didn't matter anymore at all, the grueling battle to preserve his soul's integrity, the long, so long force of will upon desire, in but a few moments he had lived more than in the thirty-two years of his long, detached and yet full life, thus far only dedicated to pleasure. In him he found a pleasure he never had dreamed it could exist, it only took an instant of closeness to make him realize how much of his time he had wasted by being alone. Malia's face flickered up before his eyes for a painful instant but Malia was the past and this was the present and future.
"Immer habe ich dich geliebt. Aber ich habe es dir niemals zeigen dürfen. Gott segnet seine verdammten KInder nicht mit soviel Glück!" Friedrich rasped as he bent down his head for the long desired, forgotten and yet never truly abandoned kiss. Their mouths met in a moment of wild abandon, like a candle flaring up in the wind before it's reduced to smoke. His arms slid around his lover's neck and forced his head even closer so he could bask in his love like a child in the sun. He locked his fingers to secure his hold when it suddenly tore open the still bleeding wound....tearing him back to reality and to life itself.
He withdrew, his chest heaving with short breaths and his eyes still glowing with desire, yet there was confusion battling it down. The Baron still stood where they had kissed but his features were all but calm. He fought a terrible battle and he was close to losing it this time.
"Gawd....I gotta go....somewhere.........." Gabriel rasped.
"Mein Engel, don't confuse fear with reality. Go, get some rest, I will finish our meal and then we'll have dinner. Don't do anything rash. We will both forget that this happened." God, you dear and gentle God, is there no peace with you? I shall never forget and you know that. "Up in the bathroom you'll find bandages and salves."
Gabriel was torn between leaving for the bathroom immediately and going back home to where there was no temptation of any sort....but he knew that he needed Friedrich. He ought to be shocked at forgetting himself so much and the Baron's patience with him puzzled him even more. Yes, that moment meant something. Didn't it mean something to him as well? Why that coldness and calm in those blue eyes which had, only a moment ago, been burning with desire? He left the kitchen confused, hurting and fighting the urge to throw himself back into those strong arms.
"Mein Geliebter, mein Leben, dein Schicksal hat mir keinen Platz zugedacht. Ein gestohlener Moment....nur einer....davon kann ich zehren und sei es für tausende von Jahren!" Friedrich whispered after Gabriel had shut the door behind him.
