Chapter Five: Breakout
"Mwahahahaha!" Eggman chortled maniacally as half-a-dozen Egg Pawns trampled their way into the asylum. This would be even easier than he'd thought. This was a hospital prison, and besides, who'd expect anybody to try to break into a prison? Most of the security consisted of trained guards and locked doors. Neither was any match for him. His minor worry was that Shadow wouldn't want to come with him, but he dismissed it. After almost six weeks in here, the dark hedgehog would take a ride out from the devil himself.
"We need backup!" a guard insisted into a telephone, "It's Doctor Eggman and he's breaking INTO Acapulco Asylum!" He managed to get this out just before an Egg Pawn knocked him senseless and smashed the phone.
"Don't get in my way, gentlemen, and you won't get hurt," Eggman said calmly, stepping out of the Egg-O-Matic, "I, Doctor Eggman, scientist extraordinaire, have only come for what is rightfully mine." A number of doctors and guards stared at each other, confused, as the Egg Pawns held them at gunpoint, "The hedgehog, you idiots!" Eggman shouted.
"He wants Project Shadow?" Doctor Ferguson asked a co-worker.
"What else is there here of worth?" Eggman shouted, "Well? Isn't anybody going to tell me I won't get away with this?" he asked loudly.
"Sure! You won't get away with this, Eggman!" a very familiar voice called out. Standing at the other end of the hallway was a blue hedgehog with a cocky grin on his face. Sonic had been coming over to visit Shadow when Eggman struck. The thought that he would have been turned away never even occurred to him. But thanks to the chaos, there had been nobody at the gate. Fortunate for him, not so fortunate for the doctor.
"Damn! You again!" Eggman snapped, "Well, I'm not here to play with you today, Sonic. I'm here for Shadow. Make a single move, and these innocent employees of GUN will be blasted into a million pieces, and you wouldn't want that, would you?"
That stopped Sonic, who knew that he couldn't destroy all of the robots before they got a shot off, not without a Chaos Emerald or a ring handy. Even if they weren't the most pleasant people around, he couldn't allow the GUN employees to be hurt. Reluctantly, the blue hedgehog stood his ground, his mind racing and eyes searching for a way to gain the upper hand.
"Ha! These idiots treated Shadow like dirt and you still can't hurt them! Your compassion will be your downfall, Sonic!" Eggman gloated, "This time, I have won! Mwahahaha-"
"Hold it right there, Doctor Eggman!" shouted somebody behind him, "You too, Sonic the Hedgehog!" They both looked, "Turn around slowly and put your hands on your head!" the GUN soldier ordered them. Behind him were several other soldiers, and they were all pointing guns at Sonic and Eggman.
"Get them!" Eggman shouted to his Eggpawns, which immediately began firing at the soldiers. Eggman leapt into his Egg-O-Matic with surprising speed for one so disgustingly fat, and flew away down one of the corridors in the confusion.
Yelping in surprise, Sonic took off running into the fight, dodging and weaving around blasts directed at him from both sides, avoiding the soldiers and smashing the machines, fighting to allow the doctors and attendants a chance to escape, "What are you waiting for?" he shouted at them, "Get out of here!"
The doctors continued to cower under desks and tables, "He must be looking for Project Shadow," said Ferguson, "You can't let him break that hedgehog out! Go! The soldiers can handle the Egg Pawns!"
And me if I stick around any longer, Sonic thought. Nodding quickly to Ferguson, he sped off down the corridor that Eggman had taken in hot pursuit of the crazed doctor.
Eggman had already reached the padded cell that held Shadow, and was using a device of his own making to open the door, which could only be opened with a keycard and pin number. He didn't see Sonic approaching as the door opened into the cell.
Skidding to a stop behind him, Sonic pointed at the doctor and called out, "Hold it, Eggman! It's just you and me now!"
Eggman looked up, surprised, "Go away, Sonic," he told the blue hedgehog sharply, "Shadow belongs to me, not you or GUN."
"Shadow belongs to no one!" Sonic retorted, walking closer. If it came down to a fight, he was confident that he would come out on top. Eggman wasn't particularly tough, not without some massive death machine to command, and the basic Egg-O-Matic was easy to destroy, "I can't let you do this."
Inside the cell, Shadow blinked slowly, waking up to the sound of voices. Was it morning already? He looked up. Two people... his sluggish mind identified them, "Sonic? Doctor Eggman?" he asked.
"Yes, Shadow, I have come to get you out of here," said Eggman, "Would you like to come with me?"
Shadow sat right up in his straitjacket at the offer, "Would I?!"
"It's all a dream. Or a hallucination. It wouldn't be the first time," his shadow informed him, a voice that only he could hear, "Come on, do you really think anybody gives a shit about what happens to you?"
Seeing the brightened look in Shadow's eyes, Sonic spoke quickly, "Wait, Shadow! This is Eggman you're talking to! You know he just wants to use you,” he hesitated, “Look, the guards are all busy with his robots, and the way is clear. ...Come with me!"
"See? A dream," Shadow's shadow pointed out again, "Why would Sonic want to help you, after all you did?"
"Love to come with either of you but I'm a bit..." Shadow tugged at his straitjacket, "Tied up? I'd laugh if it wasn't so totally unfunny."
Naturally, Sonic was faster than the doctor, speeding under his Egg-O-Matic and leaping into the cell with Shadow, "No problemo,” he said cheerfully, untying the jacket.
"Right," Shadow stretched, and started to tug at the reinforced cuffs on his ankles, "And these?"
Sonic winced and tugged a couple of quills off his head to use as makeshift lockpicks, sliding them and into the cuffs and fiddling with them until the locking mechanism clicked open.
"Now that feels good..." Shadow stretched. Then he kicked Sonic in the chest and out of the cell, knocking him into Eggman as he did so, "And that felt even better!" he smirked, and ran out of the cell, just pausing to grab Eggman's high-tech keycard. He wasn't anything like as fast as he had once been thanks to the drugs and lack of exercise, but he was still Shadow the Hedgehog, and he was making a run for it.
A startled Sonic scrambled to his feet and pushed Eggman away, quickly taking off after Shadow in a blur of motion, "Hey, wait up, Shadow!" he called out.
"Hell no!" Shadow shouted back, his bare feet slapping against the linoleum. It was then that three attendants pounced him, and he started to struggle frantically under them, yelling like crazy.
Sonic weighed his options for a moment as the weakened Shadow struggled with the hospital employees. In any other time or place, Shadow would have wiped the floor with them in seconds, but in his drugged state, they actually could overpower him. Making up his mind with a resigned sigh, Sonic stepped forward and kicked one of the attendants off Shadow. His foot spun into another kick that caught a worker across the face, and he dragged the final one off Shadow with his bare hands, shoving him against a wall, "You're not putting him back in that cell!" he told the shocked attendant, "Now tell me where Shadow's stuff is being kept!"
"I don't know!" the attendant told him.
Behind Sonic, Shadow had picked up a nightstick and was holding it in a very professional sort of way, "Then tell me," he growled.
"I told you, I don't know! The doctors might!" the attendant said hurriedly.
Satisfied with that answer, Sonic released the man, "Get out of here; this place is turning into a war-zone,” he told the frightened attendant.
Shadow stepped forward before the attendant could move, and slammed the nightstick against the back of his head, "That'll keep him out of the way," he said, teeth gritted. There was more than just professionalism in that strike; anger had been boiling within Shadow for over a month now, and now it was getting a chance to be let out. As the attendant slumped, Shadow raised the nightstick again.
Gasping, Sonic reached out and roughly grabbed Shadow's wrist, holding back the strike, "What are you doing?! He's already down!"
"Not down enough!" Shadow snarled, "Let go of me!" he tried to pull his wrist away from Sonic.
In his state, however, he was no match again Sonic, who kept his grip firmly on Shadow's wrist, "I thought you wanted to get better, Shadow!" he spoke accusingly, "If you want to hurt people some more, I'll put you right back in that cell, and I'll leave you there!" He stared into Shadow's eyes angrily, releasing his wrist.
"Sometimes hurting people is necessary," Shadow replied, but he relented, "Fine, I'll leave him." He pulled away from Sonic, and took off running down the hallway again.
Relieved that Shadow still retained some amount of control, the blue hedgehog followed after Shadow. Leaving the hospital would be no problem, but escaping past that would be more of a challenge, which was why Sonic wanted Shadow to get back his stuff while they had the chance.
They reached the monitoring room - fortunately Eggman had smashed down the gates on his way in. But now GUN had re-grouped and were waiting for them both, with tranquilizer guns, "Fire at-"
"Get down!" Shadow yelled, diving for the floor. Everybody ducked again, "Sonic, this shit doesn't have an antidote!" he shouted at the blue hedgehog from behind a desk, as tranquilizers were fired overhead, "They made it to bring me down; if they hit you, you'll be dead before you hit the floor!"
Thinking fast, Sonic rather leapt into the air over the wave of tranquilizers before leaping into the midst of GUN soldiers, quickly knocking them back with a flurry of punches and kicks, far too fast for the human troops to avoid or counter. Stripping weapons and beating the troops senseless, Sonic had ended the threat swiftly.
He rubbed his gloved hands together, looking over his handiwork with a pleased smile. None of the troops were seriously hurt, but they wouldn't be bothering him or Shadow anytime soon, "I'll be fine,” he told the dark hedgehog with a thumbs-up, "Eggman's given me lots of practice with dodging things."
Shadow stood up, "One more thing," he grabbed Ferguson, "Where's my stuff?"
"I don't-"
"WHERE'S MY STUFF?!" Shadow screamed, slamming the nightstick onto Ferguson's arm.
"I don't know! GUN took it away for researching!" Ferguson yelled back, "And you just broke my arm!"
"There are 215 bones in your body!" Shadow growled, “That’s one.” He threw the doctor aside with a curse.
"Geez, Shadow. Chill out, will ya?" Sonic asked of the dark hedgehog, giving Ferguson a sorry look. The guy may have been thoughtless, but he never meant any harm.
Shadow managed to stifle a snarl, "There's more of them waiting outside," he said, kicking a soldier out of his way, "Maybe trying to get out was a bad idea..."
It was a big shock for Sonic to hear Shadow say something like that. The dark hedgehog might have been filled with angst, but he shouldn't have such a defeatist attitude. It must have been his time in the asylum that had done it, "That doesn't sound like you at all,” Sonic remarked, "Come on, you're Shadow! You're the Ultimate Lifeform! You're not going to be stopped by a bunch of guys with guns, are ya?"
Shadow brightened up a bit at that, "Hell no!" he said, sounding more cheerful, "Come on, let's get out of here!" he started running again, this time heading for the elevator.
Sonic smiled at the change of Shadow's mood. Maybe there really was hope for him yet. Like Sonic thought, it just took a slice of freedom to bring out the best in him. Sonic sped into the elevator and, not waiting for it to move, shot up through its roof and ran up the elevator shaft.
"Sonic!" Shadow called up to him, standing in the elevator, "I can't..." Can't. The word really hurt. But he couldn't run like that, not right now. He hit the button for 'up'.
"Oh,” Sonic uttered, remembering Shadow's current limitations. Seeing the elevator ascend the shaft, the blue hedgehog shrugged and waited on the top floor, "No worries!"
Shadow looked up at him, "This all makes me feel so fucking weak!" he snarled, punching a wall. He was still strong enough to leave a sizable dent though.
Sonic resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Shadow's attitude, "Come on, you'll be back to normal soon,” he spoke soothingly to him as the elevator arrived on the roof.
Shadow dodged to one side as the door opened, but nobody was there, "If you don't have a plan, Faker, I swear I'll break your neck for sure this time," he told the blue hedgehog as they stepped onto the roof.
"Plan? Who needs a plan?" Sonic asked cheerfully. After all, the entire escape wasn't planned; Eggman had forced him to think on the run. Fortunately, that was when he was at his best, "Grab onto me; I'll run us into the city. We can hide out at my place."
Shadow approached the edge of the building cautiously. The building was surrounded by GUN soldiers, and every one of them was ready with the tranquilizer guns he recognised easily, "I hate to break it to you, Sonic," he said, "But you may have to kill somebody to get out this time. As if you're not in deep enough shit already."
"Are you kidding me? They won't even know what zoomed past them!" Sonic said with a chuckle, "You really have been locked up in here too long. Now come on and grab on."
"Hrrrmm..." Shadow muttered, considering it.
"Up there! On the roof!" somebody shouted.
"Fire!" somebody else shouted.
"Shit!" Shadow snarled. He moved fast, standing in front of Sonic, wrapping his arms protectively around the blue hedgehog. He never was able to explain why he did that, because just then three or four tranquilizers thudded into his back instead of into Sonic, "Shit..." he slurred, slumping, "Guess I... don't have a choice now..."
"Shadow!" Sonic shouted, grabbing Shadow to keep him from falling off the roof, dragging him to safety. He was both surprised and angry at the dark hedgehog for doing that. Angry that Shadow did that when he could have dodged them easily. Surprised that he did it in the first place. But that was an argument that would have to wait until later. Not waiting to give the soldiers a chance to fire again, Sonic scooped the darker hedgehog up into his arms and leapt off the room, feet already speeding into a run. He hit the ground and took off, dodging tranquilizers and angry soldiers, racing towards freedom.
Shadow mumbled something as he hung limply from Sonic's arms, breathing slowly. The drugs had almost completely knocked him out; he was just about aware of the speed, the shouting, the cries, and of somebody holding him, although as far as he knew it could all have been a dream.
The soldiers became increasingly frustrated and afraid as they found that they simply could not touch Sonic if he didn't want them to. It was like they were moving in slow motion to him, and he was making fun of their inability to keep up. Mostly, he just wanted to humiliate them for all the trouble they had caused and for knocking out Shadow. Having had his fun, Sonic ran off away from them towards the city, where he could hide for now.
