Chapter 5
Roxas found peace in his new found loneliness as Axel disappeared more often than ever to complete his “missions” in Castle Oblivion.
Axel always came back in a disarrayed state, upset, angry and seemed to be hiding his true purpose. He always flashed that trademark smile to Roxas, regardless of his real inner feelings.
Roxas planted himself in Axel’s chambers, contemplating the mysteries of his existence and why he was chosen to wield the key blade. He had no memory of his previous existence and any disturbing dreams he had in the past were completely gone now. All he had to think about was how everything he had came to be.
Roxas heard voices out in the halls and walked quietly to Axel’s doorway, listening in on the conversation. It was Larxene and Marluxia. He could not make out much of their conversation due to their light whispering. All he could hear was something about a failed replica, overthrowing the Organization and Axel eliminating the traitors in it all. The blonde’s eyes went wide at the sound of Axel eliminating anybody.
Suddenly, a portal appeared behind Roxas as he continued to stare out of the door at Larxene and Marluxia.
“Boo!” Axel grabbed Roxas from behind.
Roxas yelped in surprise as he reeled around the face his lover. Axel leaned in to plant a kiss on the blonde’s face and Roxas put his hand up.
“What’s wrong Roxas?” Axel tilted his head in annoyed curiosity.
“Axel, would you destroy me if I turned my back on the Organization?” Roxas’ eyes bore deep into the redhead’s eyes, now avoiding his stare.
Axel swallowed hard…”I could never destroy you Roxas, why would you even ask me that?”
“I heard Larxene and Marluxia talking briefly. I overheard something about you eliminating traitors…” Roxas turned away from Axel now.
Axel’s eyes widened, wondering what else he had heard. “Well, uh….I’m just following orders Roxas…I’m not going to risk being turned into a dusk for…Well, I won’t lose you as a result of another‘s mistakes…”
“Who did you….eliminate…?”
Axel closed his eyes as the mental images came rushing back to him.
[ Mercy, Axel…I don’t want to…go…yet…] Axel stands behind Vexen and his chakram slices through his fellow nobody. With one final blow, Vexen falls into the darkness of twilight, black smoke rising from the ground as he disappears.
[ WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE?!] a boy in red, wielding a key blade screams out to Axel in utter confusion and anger as the murderous redhead smiles at him and disappears.
“Vexen..” Axel raises his eyes to Roxas, an unmistakable smile plastered across his mischievous face due to the fact that he obviously did not regret his actions.
Roxas stands before him in shock and avoids his gaze without speaking. Axel approaches him and wraps his arms around the blonde.
“I’m just weeding the garden Roxas…” Axel holds his lover against him tighter, avoiding his thoughts of the dangerous visitor in Castle Oblivion…none other than Roxas’ other half, Sora.

(Some Time Later…)
“You shall be the one to open the door to light…” Stained glass windows glare against the blinding light as the boy in red slashes through surrounding heartless and makes his way through doors opening to unknown pathways…
Roxas jolts from his sleep once again, covered in a cold sweat. He glances over at Axel’s sleeping form, his arm still dead weighted around Roxas.
The dreams had slowly began to return since the events of Castle Oblivion. They were hazy and none of them seemed to make sense but he felt oddly connected to them all. He had to know why.
Roxas learned to cope with the disappearances of Marluxia, Larxene, Lexaeus, Zexion and the assassination of Vexen but could not shake the feeling that their deaths had a connection to something bigger…something deeper. Roxas never learned what truly transpired in Castle Oblivion and why Axel was the only surviving member of the Organization to leave but he knew it was dark and full of manipulation.
The blonde had to escape his thoughts somehow. His brain ached to even try and contemplate it all and he lifted himself carefully from Axel’s side, making sure not to wake his love. He pulled his coat over his shoulders and rushed out into the halls, towards the gates.
The midnight sky is shrouded in the darkness of swirling clouds as thunder shakes the city beneath its grasp. The heavens weep into the overwhelming night, bathing the city in its tears.
Roxas walks out into the neon lit labyrinth, hood pulled over his blonde hair, hoping to separate himself from everything he knows. His boots crash loudly into nearby puddles on the street and the rain beads gracefully off his leather coat. The faint sound of buzzing neon signs break the silence and their light bathes the darkened alleys and buildings.
The nobody finds himself at the base of Memory’s Skyscraper at the center of his world. He gazes up at the eerie screens mounted on its face as they flash images from his dreams as if they were connected into his thoughts. Shuddering, he turns away and stares down into a puddle on the street beneath him. A set of yellow eyes stare hungrily back at him and he backs away slightly as large shadowy heartless seem to emerge from every drop of rain in the clearing.
His lips part slightly in shock and he draws in a deep breath. The growing hoard of creatures begin to descend upon him and a deep hidden rage boils inside his veins. Every ounce of anger locked away inside his non-existent heart bursts forth as he unleashes duel key blades, ready to fight.
Roxas gracefully leaps from the base of Memory’s Skyscraper, into the mass of heartless, leaving a wake of destruction in his path. The key blades rip through bodies, sending black smoke along with endless glittering captive hearts into the midnight sky. The nobody flings a key blade through the air, tearing a path through the ocean of darkness and returning to its wielder’s determined grasp. The pounding in Roxas’ chest beats in time with his fluid razor like movements as he flips himself backwards into the air, ending another heartless existence with every slash.
The swirling storm clouds give way above the skyscraper, revealing stars to shoot across a veil of purple night.
Roxas gazes up towards the roof of the building and lays eyes on a being perched on top of one of the eerie glowing screens, still flashing ghost like images of the nobody’s dreams. [Where’s Sora…] A voice rings through Roxas’ ears.
The being’s silvery hair dances in the storm’s caressing breeze and his eyes are shrouded with a blindfold as if he is hiding from…himself. An elegant smile spreads across his pale lips as he opens his arms towards the heavens…[Something so natural…]
Roxas glares as the thudding in his chest tears through his being, knowing that somehow, this is all connected, to his destiny. [The memory beyond…]
The nobody stares at the heartless, gathering in endless numbers towards him and he leaps towards the building, scaling its face. Roxas breaks into a run over darkened windows and brick as he slashes through the shadows in his path. The rain stings against his face and his body shudders with rage. [His voice…]
Roxas reels his arm back and flings one of the key blade through the air, towards the being smiling down at him as he moves with endless determination. As the key blade tears through the air, the man suddenly leaps from the building and takes the key blade in his grasp. He falls with angelic grace and Roxas meets him face to face for an instant as he flies past him. The nobody turns in mid-air and chases the intruder down the face of the building.
The two men land on their feet simultaneously on the street beneath them and the ocean of darkness suddenly disappears, leaving only traces of swirling smoke and black tendrils in the shallow puddles in the clearing.
[He looks a lot like you…] The man’s voice echoing in Roxas’ ears as they charge towards each other, key blades drawn. A loud clang sounds throughout the alleys and sparks fly against the colliding metal as the man holds the key blade in defense against Roxas’ skilled movements. The nobody sneers at him and continues with an onslaught of unavoidable strikes, the anger in him causing his body to scream out.
The man suddenly falls to the ground and into the puddles of water across the concrete. Roxas stands over him, an expression of rage painted across his face as he snatches the key blade from the blindfolded being.
“Why?….Why do you have the key blade?” The man cries out to him in obvious frustration.
The question burns through Roxas, hitting him at the very core of his being. He inhales deeply, knowing this has finalized his decision to abandon everything he knows.
“Shut up!” Roxas screams and runs down the alleys, the wind and the rain blowing the hood from his face, matting his hair to his tear streaked cheeks.
Roxas knew, he had to find Axel and leave the Organization.
