Can't Stop the Signal

“Ah…Commander?”

Joker’s voice brought her back to reality.

“Hate to bother you while you’re busy destroying the ship, but you’ve got mail!”

Shepard sighed. “Come on, Joker, you’re being melodramatic…it’s only a little part of the ship.”

She heard him snort. “EDI doesn’t think so, Commander. And I hate to do it, but I have to agree. Gunnery console’s kind of important, you know?”

“Joker, did you just say you agreed with EDI?”

“Well, really, what I meant was that she wasn’t entirely wrong. In this case. Maybe.”

Shepard snickered. Even as bad as she was feeling, Joker could still wring a smile from her.

“Anyway, what’s this “you’ve got mail” crap? Isn’t it Kelly’s job to tell me that?”

“Well, this isn’t exactly mail. It’s really more like a…message sent through an incredibly secure and extremely well-coded frequency which managed to completely bypass the ship’s normal comm channels and which happened to come from Omega roughly two minutes ago.”

“And you just happened to intercept this communication before it could make it to my personal terminal?”

“Um, something like that. Anyway, did I mention that it was from Omega?”

“Yeah. So I’m assuming that you listened to the message?”

“Well…EDI did. And she thought you better hear it right away.”

“So just what does this top-secret super spy message say?” she said, lowering her head and massaging her temples, trying to ward off the headache she felt coming.

Aria T’Loak’s curt voice came over the link. “Shepard—come see me. Please.”

The shock of hearing Aria say “please” hit Shepard like a bucket of cold water.

“Did she say anything else?”

“Nope,” Joker said, all business now.

“Omega, Joker. On the double.”

“Already on it, Commander. And hey, even Aria says “please” sometimes.”

She rolled her eyes. “Shepard out,” she said, sprinting for the elevator.
