Chapter 4
It had taken about 3 hours for Dante to finally calm Nero down, and he was quietly sleeping in the older man’s arms at the moment. Dante just couldn’t figure out what would’ve cause someone like Nero to suddenly go completely hysterical. If it wasn’t for the fact that Dante was half devil, not to mention the son of Sparda, the kid would most likely have ripped him apart in his hysterics. He was thankful that Kyrie hadn’t been here, she would never have been able to do help Nero, and would have ended up getting hurt, if not worse, killed.
Nero suddenly started to moan in his sleep, and started pushing at Dante, as if trying to get away from him.
“No! Leave me alone!” Nero suddenly yelled, and violently pushed himself out of Dante’s arms. He sat there on the floor, eyes as wide as dinner plates, panting, and looking around the room. This was definitely something that Dante had never thought that he would see form the kid. He looked so afraid, which Dante had thought was impossible considering all the demons the kid had put down on his own, which would have terrified anyone, but the kid had always just faced them with a sneer on his face, this was something new, and it worried Dante.
“It’s ok kid. It’s just me; you have nothing to worry about.” Dante spoke quietly, and watched as Nero began to register where he was and just who had been talking to him.
“Dante?...” Nero asked still looking confused and out of sorts.
“Ya kid, it’s me. You gonna be ok?” Dante asked, not even trying to hide his concern from his voice.
“I...” Nero started, but couldn’t bring himself to look at the older devil hunter. Dante moved slowly towards where Nero was crouched on the floor, making sure not to startle the boy. He slowly wrapped his arms around him, and held him gently, so as to allow Nero to move away if he wished too. But Nero just leaned into the embrace, happy that Dante was there.
“Do you want to talk about?” Dante asked quietly, nuzzling the boys silver hair.
“I’ve never told anyone...but I guess I don’t have a choice now.” Nero began sullenly.
“How about I get us some pizza and beer, and we can sit upstairs in bed, and you can tell me everything you need to. How does that sound?” Dante asked, still holding Nero to him.
“Sure, that will give me time to get my thoughts in order.”
Dante gave Nero one last hug, then stood, and helped the boy to his feet, before heading to his desk to order the pizza.
“Why don’t you take a shower, while I go and get some beer?” Dante suggested as he headed towards the door.
“Ok.” Was all Nero could say at the moment.
It was about 20 minutes before Dante returned from the liquor store with the beer. During that time the pizza had arrived, and Nero was waiting for him upstairs. Dante had to remember that he was there for Nero, which was hard when he found said boy sitting on the bed wearing nothing but a pair of Dante’s boxers.
“I got the beer.” Dante spoke softly from the doorway so as not to surprise his new lover. He really wanted to know what was wrong with the kid, he was so depressed, not to mention jumpy, and it was really beginning to worry Dante, more than he was willing to admit.
Dante walked over to the bed, and sat on the edge, and handed Nero one of the beers he had picked up from the liquor store. He took one himself, then proceeded to climb further onto the bed, and slowly pull Nero over to sit snuggled into his arms. The two sat in silence for a few minute, then Nero finally began to speak.
“Please don’t think I’m weak because of what I am going to tell you...” Nero spoke so softly that if Dante had been a regular person he would not have heard him.
“Kid you have knocked me on my ass more than my brother has, so you won’t have to worry about me thinking you are weak. We all have things in our past that stay with us, no matter how hard we try to forget them.” Dante responded quietly, giving Nero a light hug and nuzzling the boy’s hair again.
“When I was a child, my father used to chain me to the wall in the basement, and beat me whenever he got pissed off for any reason. He would call me a monster because of my arm and hair. I even watched him murder my mother when I was 5.” At this point Dante had noticed that Nero was shaking slightly in his arms, but just held him quietly. “I can still hear her screams, and see the blood as he cut her throat. He told me that if I didn’t do as he said, he would do the same thing to me, that my life was in his hands because I was an abomination. Most days he wouldn’t feed me, and the beatings would go on for hours, until I was unconscious, if not half dead.” By this point Nero was in tears as he recalled the violent beatings he had suffered as a child.
“Shhhh, it’s ok, you’re not the same little kid you had been, you’re a strong devil hunter, and I doubt that any human could even be a match for you, I mean come on, I can barely match you.” Dante tried desperately to cheer his lover up.
“That’s because you’re an old man.” Nero managed to choke out a small laugh.
“Hey I’m not that old you know.” Dante tried to defend, but he was glad to see even a small smile on the kids face.
“Whatever you say old man.” Nero continued to poke at Dante, it seemed to make him feel better, but it wasn’t just that. He felt better now that he had told someone the truth, and hadn’t been laughed at, or even been made fun of.
“So what caused you to freak out earlier?” Dante asked quietly, not sure if he should.
Nero became very quiet, and Dante was beginning to wonder if the kid was ok, but then he spoke very softly. “Someone sent me a picture of my mother’s corpse.”
“What?!” Dante’s head snapped up, and he looked down at the still form of his lover. No wonder he had gone ballistic after opening the package. Dante knew that if he had received something like that he would have reacted the same way, and he would have been a bigger danger to anyone around, then Nero was.
“He’s telling me that he knows where I am and that he can still come after me whenever he wishes. He used to show me that picture whenever he wanted me to understand that he had control over whether I lived or died.” Nero continued very quietly, almost too quiet for even Dante to catch.
“I swear if I ever see him, I will make sure that I kill him very, very, very slowly.” Dante growled, trying very hard not to Devil Trigger, but it was hard not to when all he wanted to do was to rip the man’s throat out.
“Dante...” Nero started, but found his lips covered by another’s, in a soft, tender kiss.
“Just rest kid, I promise I will never let anyone ever hurt you like that again.” Dante spoke quietly in Nero’s ear, slowly running his fingers through the younger hunter’s hair.
They stayed like that for the remainder of the evening, and soon Dante realized that Nero had fallen asleep in his arms, and he was more than content to let the kid sleep as he was.
