Chapter Four
CHAPTER FOUR:
“Where exactly is he?” I was inspecting some rocks carefully. We were about a day’s walk north of Bruma. It was frigid, I was lucky it hadn’t thawed from the late summer yet.
“I have to find the door.”
“I don’t think you’re gonna find it there.” I just glared him down. Stupid child. “I’m older than you.” Senile old fool. He scowled. I shivered slightly as my hand brushed a rock. “Are you cold?” He conjured a cloak out of air and darkness.
“You’ll probably need it more than me.” He just shrugged and dismissed the cloak. I was comfortable in my enchanted clothes. My pants fortified my acrobatics, my top was frost resistant and lightly feathered. My boots were heavily feather enchanted, as well as my gloves.
I turned the rock over and sure enough there was the seal. I jammed my heavily enchanted glass dagger into the small crevice while simultaneously grabbing Damon as reality shifted. We were in a throne room, a blind woman was sitting on the throne stroking the living mute ice dragon that curled its massive frame around the woman and the throne.
“Hello? Is Frost in?” The woman turned towards my voice.
“Ah, Cat. He has been expecting you.” She unwound herself from the chair and silently walked over to us.
“Luna, good to see you.” Luna grinned broadly, not looking a day over twenty. “Where has your son gone?”
“He told me to stay and wait for you, I’m pretty sure he has escaped to his brother’s realm to avoid work. Again.” She sighed, tossing her midnight hair. She picked up a dagger mid-air. She stabbed it into the very cold itself, cut a large hole and reached in. She dug for a while eventually finding what she wanted. She pulled and hauled a man through the hole.
“Whaaat?” The man whined.
“You have visitors.” He blinked and looked at us. “Ah, Cat! Good to see you. Who’s that there behind you?”
“This is Damon.”
“Darcius’s brat. Right.” He dismissed Damon that easily. “So, what do you need of me?” He paused and tapped his chin. “Or want of me, I think I prefer want. Makes me feel powerful, as long as you don’t want bread. I’m out, no muffins either so don’t ask.”
“Can you break my deal with Hades?” He looked at me then. His dual colored eyes flashing as he had one of his few moments of clarity and sanity.
“Like I’ve said before, yes, and like I’ve said before you would owe me that massive favor.” I could feel Damon itching to say something. “My god man, spit it out, your thoughts are giving me a headache.”
“Who is this and why are we here, Cat?” I just rolled my eyes.
“This is Frost the King of Cold himself.” He bowed to me, ignoring Damon completely. “I am trying to get out of my deal with Hades.”
“Creepy fellow, seduced me once. Took me weeks to forget. Damn, I remembered.” He shivered. “Maybe I’ll pay him a visit.” Frost’s mind was starting to wander. Damon made a face.
“Don’t make faces dear, it’ll stick like that.” Luna said as she passed.
“Now what’s your problem you hobknocker?” Frost glared down.
“Frost, if you don’t have anything nice to say…” Luna started.
“I know, I know, ‘Kill the fucker so he never says anything again…’ Thank you, Mother Goose.” Luna just stuck out her chin childishly and floated away. Damon turned to me.
“What is this ‘massive favor’?” He looked at me suspiciously. Frost chimed in while throwing his legs over the arm of the throne.
“Until I feel something she has to fuck my brains-“ Luna gripped him by the throat and threw him to the floor.
“I know I raised you better than to use that kind of language when referring to a lady; especially around her mate. You don’t know how close I am to killing you for good.” Damon looked at me alarmed. I chose the petty thing to fight about.
“He is not my mate.”
“Friend with benefits?” Frost offered from his position on the floor five feet from my feet.
“Not really.”
“Hmmm…” He stood, ruffled his short curly starlight hair, and walked off into the darkness, searching for the right phrase.
“Frost is no help at all…” I pondered.
“Never has been darling.” Luna soothed as she rubbed my shoulder. It was strange, you rarely saw her move. “Maybe Zephyr could help. Though he can be difficult too…”
“He can’t be worse.”
“Depends on the situation.” I pondered some more.
“I’ll see what he offers. If it’s not worth it, I can leave.” Luna nodded and pulled a key out of her pocket.
“Why did I have twins?” she pulled a door woven of air open onto a glass stone path. “Go left, the path will take you right to him. Knock first, softly, he’s going through a mental breakdown.”
“Did he get another girlfriend?” she nodded.
“I don’t know why he keeps doing this to himself. He always ends up killing them out of frustration.” I nodded and proceeded through. Damon tried but was stuck. I hauled him through. He was useless to me right now, kind of a liability really at this point. As we walked he tried to start up a conversation.
“What kind of man kills his girlfriends when he gets frustrated?”
“Be nice to him, hes like a brother to me. Frost doesn’t feel a thing.” He frowned at me. “Didn’t you notice?” He just shook his head. “Zephyr feels everything, he feels everything he should feel, but he also feels everything Frost doesn’t.”
“How-?”
“I don’t even know how or why it works. I think they were the same person split down the middle.” I ran a hand through my dark red hair, sighing. “ Frost longs to feel something, Zephyr longs to feel something for the right person.”
