Darkness and Indecision

The sun rose and set as days passed. Enowa trained to be Zelda’s personal guard. Lessons from Master Eclipse and Sheik were increasing her skill quickly. Link was trying not to bother Zelda, but still his desire for her burned. Zelda went to bed some nights, with him behind her, asking her to come to his bedroom. Zelda would always sharply refuse. Tonight was one of those nights.
Zelda closed her door and shut her eyes, feeling a large amount of guilt. It saddened her that she could not reply to his love and again she wondered if she would ever love him. She opened her eyes and gazed about the room, trying to calm herself.
She had designed and created the room herself. The floor was pale marble and the walls silvery-gray. But the beauty of it came from the carefully tended sections of soil, placed everywhere. Plants filled the room. Small trees grew with delicate blossoms. And the sound of running water as it ran along the sides of the room and through small channels carved into the floor soothed her tired senses. A large fluffy bed was on her left and a door at the other end of the room on the right, led to the bathroom. There was a balcony, a desk, two bookshelves and an area that had no rugs with some weapons on the wall. Two large cream couches stood near the middle, close to a low glass table. A short pillar of black stood near the balcony, a crystal statue of the three goddesses atop it, catching the faint rays of the last sliver of the moon.
She removed her dress and set it on a chair by the door. The servants would come in the morning to clean it. Leaving her breast band on, she pulled on her night wear. A tight black shirt and pants. The thought of the very proper Neela seeing her, brought a smile to her lips.
‘It is only in case I have to get up in the middle of the night.’ Thought Zelda. ‘We must be careful of an attack from the rebellion.’
Zelda removed the tiara and set it on her bedside table. She then slid under the covers and sighed, already falling asleep.
She did not know an attack from the rebellion would become the least of her worries.

She was flying. Over her lands, seeing wonderful, happy faces. She turns to the north, surveying the town and her castle, most traces of the suffering caused by Ganondorf gone…Clouds gathering…
She looks beyond the castle, farther north. In the tall, dark clouds gathering there, she sees the peaks of the high black mountains…lightning flashes…
Feeling uneasy, she turns to call the sages for help. A chill wind rises, pulling her towards the mountains. She can’t feel herself moving. She can only watch as she draws nearer to the dark peaks…Rain falling…
Faster and faster. Over meadows and rocks. Then very little vegetation. Black rock shining dully in the rain. Faster…towards the one place she did not want to be…Suddenly she stopped!
Rain and wind. Lightning flashed, thunder screamed, illuminating…The Seal to the Sacred Realm!
Runes were carefully carved into the dark stone and six symbols, made by the very sages that presented, glowed faintly. Her symbol, her Triforce piece with the mark of the Seventh Sage, the emblem of Time, carved on it, was in the center. The lightning flashed again and the symbols flared. Then silence was heard…And all she heard in the silence, was a sharp crack.
Fear clutched her heart as she saw the jagged line appear down the middle…

“By Nayru…NO!”
Zelda sat up from her dream, gasping. It was still dark out. “Just…a dream…” She said, relaxing. Then she remembered the fear she had felt. “No…It could not be a dream…I have never felt fear in dreams…”
Tearing out of bed she dashed down the hall stopped by Link’s door.
Fear filling her heart, she didn’t give a care as she swung her hand, power surging from it.
Link was very startled when his door blew to pieces. Out came the Master Sword as he stood, ready to fight. Yet the dust cleared revealing Zelda dressed in tight, black clothing.
“Zelda! What is the matter?” Despite knowing It wasn’t true, he hoped she had come to his room for…other reasons.
“Link…Get dressed and ready Epona! If what I have seen is true…Then we are all in terrible danger!” Said Zelda, still gasping.
She then ran on, wanting to avoid sharp questions, and the piercing gaze that made her feel naked.
She ran until she reached the dormitory where all the Sheikah in the castle usually slept. She reached the end of the hallway, pulled open the door and froze.
The Phantom crouched on the end of his bed, chest bare, throwing blades in hand, eyes blazing. She ducked, but Eclipse registered who it was very quickly. “Zelda?”
“Eclipse. I am sorry to barge in here…”
He shook his head, throwing the blades into a target on the wall and leaping down to help her stand. “What is wrong?”
She accepted his hand and stood quickly. “There is no time. Get dressed. I need you to escort me to the Temple of Time.”
“Of course.”
As he went to grab his shirt, she could not help studying his scar. It started on his left shoulder, dragged across the throat and slightly onto his chest. It was as if some creature had dragged a clawed hand across his neck.
“Gruesome, is it not?”
Zelda flushed with shame to be caught staring. “It shows how noble you were.”
“That did not answer my question.”
She raised her eyes to meet his as he tied the long strip of cloth over his nose and mouth to hide his lower face. “No. I do not think it is gruesome at all.”
He searched her face, and Zelda saw his eyes lose some of their hardness. “Thank you.”
“I meant it. Come! We must hurry!”

They ran through the halls with ease. Even though Zelda was not Sheik, she ran faster then ever. True fear giving wings to her feet. She magically summoned her crown and set it upon her head.
Eclipse did not ask any questions. ‘I have never seen her so tense.’ He thought. ‘Something indeed, must be terribly wrong.’
They ran through the castle courtyard and out into the town, turning sharply left. A few guards were about, watching the dogs roam the streets. They gaped as their Queen dashed by, dressed like a man. She tore up the steps and halted, gasping.
Eclipse tried to open the doors to no avail. “It is locked.”
“Yes. I locked it myself.”
She stepped forward and placed a hand on the center of the door and closed her eyes. Her hand glowed faintly and there was a quiet click. The doors opened inward, revealing the interior of the Temple of Time.
White and black marble made up the floor. Polished white stone stacked carefully to become walls, went up so high that the ceiling was shrouded in darkness. Zelda walked over the dais of Light, past the marble slab where the Spiritual Stones were supposed to rest and faced the Door of Time. Placing her tiny, right wrist on the door, she pulled off her crown and tossed it behind her. Eclipse leaned forward ready to catch it, but it stopped in midair, hovering over the slab.
It emitted a brilliant golden light, then dropped to the ground. Eclipse stared at it, confused. He looked back to Zelda, and saw two small globes of light, right in the depressions where the Spiritual Stones once…
Eclipse gasped as the globes grew and became red and green. “Those are…”
“Yes. The miniature Spiritual Stones in my crown are the real ones.”
“…Where is the one of water?”
Zelda turned her head to face him and closed her eyes. Eclipse saw a teardrop fall off into space. Yet it stopped before it hit the ground, growing larger and brighter. It floated over to join the others.
“Amazing. That has to be the finest hiding place there is.”
Zelda did not reply as she whispered to the door. The carved stone Triforce glowed and the Door of Time opened.
She stepped inside and walked quickly towards the center of the room. Eclipse stood by the entrance, not wishing to go any farther.
She walked quietly up the steps, until she reached where the pedestal of time used to be. She knelt and inclined her head back, eyes closed.
Eclipse’s eyes widened as the room grew dark. Zelda started to glow with a soft blue light. Her eyes snapped open and her eyes seemed to be made of blue fire. The very air hummed with magic… And then was silenced! It was like Time stood still…
“Sages.”
Six misty forms appeared in a circle around Zelda, with no definite shape to them. However, they each pulsed with a different light then the rest.
“…Zelda. Why do you summon us?” Whispered a voice.
“I have dire news to tell.”
“We have felt the balance shifting strangely…”
“I have seen it! Turn your minds to the Great Seal.”
“……Zelda! The Seal has weakened terribly!”
“I have been gifted with a vision. It has cracked right down the middle!”
“Did you see anything else?”
“Thunder, lightning and rain. Nothing of importance.”
“Then our fears have come to life! Ganondorf is breaking the Seal!”
“I will be sending Link to check on it. Once he is there, I will tell him to contact you.”
“Tell him to be very careful. This situation may be more serious then we think. We await Link’s call.”
“Thank you.”

***

“It is more serious then I thought.” Stated Eclipse as he watched Zelda lock up the doors, crown back on her head.
“I know.”
“Can I do anything to help you?”
Zelda smiled weakly. “You can stay by my side and help me pass agonizing time while Link goes to the Seal.”
“Of course.”
Zelda rubbed her eyes, yawning. “Goddess, after I see Link off, I think I will sleep for an extra hour.”
“Your sleep was bothered by the dream, yes?”
“Mmmm…”
“Zelda!”
Eclipse grasped her under her arms and knees and swung her up, fearing the wobble in her step. He chuckled softly. “Zelda, what would you do without me around?”
“Well I …yawn… would probably have more bruises and a duller life.”
Eclipse flushed faintly with pleasure. “Thank you.”

Link felt jealousy and suspicion when he saw Eclipse coming back from town, carrying Zelda. He protectively took the half-slumbering form into his arms, cradling the slim body.
“Eclipse. For your sake, I hope you did nothing to her.” Whispered Link, coldly and quietly.
“Link. For your sake, I hope you will put aside such feelings. You do not know how important the journey you are about to make is.”
“Important? Oh, like getting me away from Zelda?”
“Link, just because I am laying down, does not mean I cannot hear. Let me stand.”
He flushed and gently set her down. “So what is this ‘important journey’ Zelda?”
“The Seal to the Sacred Realm has cracked. I need you to go there and see with your own eyes if it is very bad. The sages wait for your call.”
“Cracked!…You saw this in a dream?”
“A vision. And a most unpleasant one.”
“Did you see…”
“No. But I have a feeling that if we do not do something soon, we will all be seeing him.”
“Then I will leave at once!” cried Link, pulling out the Ocarina of Time playing a gentle tune.
Epona came cantering from the stables, fully saddled. Link leapt on and checked the Master Sword and the Mirror Shield.
She looked slightly ashamed. “I am sorry I cannot teleport you there. I have only been there once, I am not confident of how the area looks.”
“I will ride like the wind.” he promised.
“Link!”
“What?”
“…Please be careful.”
He hesitated and then said: “Zelda…Would you give me the honor of having a kiss?”
Knowing he meant a real kiss, but unable to find the will to grant it to him, she lifted her face and turned her head slightly. He gave the faintest sound of disappointment, touched his lips to her cheek, then cantered off, heading towards the town gate.
Zelda felt fear enter her heart, feeling like she would not see him again. ‘Even though I do not love him, I care for him as a friend…Wait…I do not love him!? Why!?’
Zelda walked slowly up to the castle, plagued by that one question.
