Chapter 4: Strange bedfellows
Cai’s POV
‘Oh my gods’ she thought, as she ripped off his tunic.
He had two very nasty wounds: One ran across his chest and the other was a very deep cut to his side. Both were bleeding heavily.
She was thankful she was also somewhat skilled in the arts of healing. Something she had been taught because of her status as a woman, her nursemaid had taught her. So that she one day could be able to treat her husband’s wounds if he came back from battle wounded.
First thing she needed to do was create a makeshift bandage. His clothes would be unusable, as they were already too blood soaked. Sighing, she removed her breastplate and tore a strip from her own, relatively clean, tunic and pressed it over the deeper wound on his side. She muttered to him “I’ll be right back Yun.” She stood up. She went to find some herbs she would need. One of the herbs, when ground into a paste would make a wonderful adhesive which she would need after she used the other herb to help disinfect the wound. Once she returned she removed the already blood soaked strip of her tunic. She sighed again and took her tunic off leaving her in nothing more than her white liangdang with green flowers embroidered on it, and skirt. She ripped off another strip while she cracked the herb open and applied the oils from it that would help the wound heal and keep it from mortifying.
She pressed the freshly torn strip of cloth against the wound, while she found two rocks and began to grind the other herb into the adhesive paste to keep the cloth from coming loose. She applied the cool paste to the ‘bandage’ and it sealed it up nicely.
Next, she went about dressing the wound on his chest, which while not as deep, was every bit as deadly; as it was close to his heart. If this wound began to mortify it would very quickly and painfully kill her beloved friend and mentor. Once she had repeated the dressing on that wound she looked around for anywhere that might provide both a clean water source and some decent firewood.
As far as food went neither of them were in much shape to eat right now. She would worry about that later. Right now she needed to get him some water and get a fire going as the night air was cooling rapidly.
After she had retrieved some water, she removed her skirt leaving her lower half nude except where her liangdang dipped low enough to cover her modesty. She folded her legs in a polite manner even though there was really no one around that would see her except Yun who had seen her bathe many times in the past after a battle.
She sighed as she looked over the wound on her leg as she scooted closer to the fire both for warmth as she was nearly naked now and for light to examine the gash. It was deep but should heal and leave her with no permanent damage to her ability to walk, ride or fight.
She applied the healing oil to her injury and then tore another strip from her now utterly destroyed tunic and wrapped it around her leg to keep the wound covered and help stem the flow of blood. She applied the paste before she lay next to the fire using her skirt and tattered tunic for a pillow. She kept her body pressed against Yun’s for added warmth in the brisk night air. She quickly drifted to sleep as her fingers found their way into his blood matted hair. “Yun, please get well soon. I need you now more than ever…” she said quietly before she drifted off to sleep.
Yun’s POV
He stirred awake. It was barely past dawn and he felt so groggy and his vision was blurry.
Slowly his eyes cleared and he looked around. First thing he noticed was the vision of beauty curled up asleep beside him almost totally naked. For one insane second he wondered what had transpired for that to happen and then the events of the day before flooded back and made things painfully clear.
There had been that huge battle…
He and she both wounded, and he remembered her dragging him away from the field afterwards. He didn’t remember anything after that.
He took note of the dressings on his more serious wounds then saw the one around her leg. She must have used her tunic for bandages, and removed her skirt to dress her wound.
He tried to sit up, but the searing pain in his side kept him from it. It was then that he noticed the way her fingers were wound into his hair. He smiled and looked at the beautiful sleeping young lady next to him. Probably for the first time he saw her as that, a young lady and not his pupil, not a soldier. He took this quiet moment to take in her beauty.
He lightly stroked her cheek and uttered a “Thank you Little Cai” using a nickname he’d had for her for a long time. He knew she had taken very good care of him or else he would not have awoken this morning. His fingers found there way into her short hair and gently ran through it. Her hair, he noticed, was very smooth, almost like silk. Her skin was the light creamy color of almonds and for some reason he thought it looked absolutely delicious and found himself longing to taste it.
He pushed those thoughts from his head and lay his head back down. His fingers continued to play through her hair and touch her cheek. For some reason despite the pain that permeated his body and the shock from the battle, he felt rather content.
While he thrived on battle, he also loved these quiet moments so he could reflect and center himself.
The chaos had been going on for so long, that it seemed it would last forever. While he knew that was just the way things seemed to be, he sometimes doubted he would live long enough to see the day it did finally end. He feared he would be killed in battle, or the chaos would go on for so long he simply died before peace could be attained.
He let a soft sigh pass, as he unconsciously let his fingers trace Cai’s skin. His fingers found their way to her lips, lightly tracing the outline of them. They were as soft as the rest of her. He wondered how they would feel pressed to his own.
‘Ugh!’ he caught himself thinking. ‘Why are you thinking like this? Now, of all times?’ He had never really taken the time to notice that she was in fact a very beautiful woman. He rarely saw her in that capacity. Most often he saw her as a hardened warrior in the fever pitch of a battle, or as his pupil when they did their combat drills. For the first time he saw her as nothing more than a beautiful young woman.
‘To think, she’s barely seen 17 summers and she’s already been through so many battles and seen the horrors that war brings.’ He sighed sadly. Such was the state of things in this turbulent time. The young forced to stand up and try and right the wrongs, to fix the mistakes of the old. While many of the rich nobles thrived on the war, the peasants and other innocent common folk were suffering and destitute.
He shook his head as best he could without disturbing her fingers with were braided tightly in his hair. He tried to clear away such negative thoughts and focus only on this quiet moment in time.
He slid his hand down, over her neck, and was lightly rubbing her shoulder. He rolled onto his left side facing her; glad he could do this as his right side was the side that had been injured making him unable to lay on it. He put his arm around her and pushed his body closer to her with his hand rubbing her back while he moved so her head was tucked under his chin. He closed his eyes and let his hand wander a bit. He noticed her liangdang did not cover her back. Her skin was very soft, he was thinking while his hand trailed ever lower.
It soon reached her adorable bum, which he could just glance down and see. He caressed it lightly taking note of how firm it was. He felt her stir and as he looked down he watched her eyes open and lock on his.
She was awake and the look she had in her eyes was one of confusion. “Yun?” she asked “What are you doing?” He froze then. ‘This is going to be very hard to explain’ he thought.
