After about three weeks of traveling on foot and Taki’s belly growing heavier by the week, Mitsurugi finally broke down and bought a horse and cart.

Now six months pregnant, Taki was beginning to feel it. She couldn’t maneuver as she could when she wasn’t pregnant and it was driving her insane. “Can we PLEASE just stop and rest?!”

Mitsurugi wouldn’t take that chance, so he broke down and bought a cart, hoping Taki would just be quieter. She was and slept most of the trip to Osaka.

Osaka was a large city, even at that time, large enough one could fit in nicely and not be discovered. The ronin rented a room at an inn on its first floor so Taki would not have to climb steps.

He helped her off the cart. “You know, we should probably get some new clothes.”

“Yeah…your coat is ripping!” Mitsurugi had given the former ninja his coat the week previous when her own clothing had grown to small for her belly.

After settling in, the couple went shopping. Taki immediately headed to the nearby tailor’s while Mitsurugi just wandered around the city.

One person there he recognized—there was no mistaking the hair. He was at a sake stand, bartering over a vintage 1471 with the keeper.

“4 koku and that’s my final offer!”

The keeper’s eyes widened. “Sold!”

The pirate slapped the coins down on the stand and strod, pr, proud as a peacock of his new prize. Mitsurugi casually strode up to him and clapped a hand on his back. “Hey, Maxi.”

“Mitsurugi Heishiro…is that YOU!?” Maxi shook hands roughly with the ronin.

“Yeah, but not so loud, please. I’m hunted.” Mitsurugi kept his voice lowered.

Maxi rolled his eyes. “What for now?” Mitsurugi grabbed the pirate’s arm and pulled him away from the drink stand. “HEY! I wasn’t finished with that.”

Ignoring the protesting pirate, Mitsurugi pulled him to the tailor that Taki was at.

The woman had her back to Maxi and the ronin when they came in. She heard the noise and turned. Her face brightened when she saw Maxi. “If I’d have know you were in Osaka, I’d have stayed in Bizen!” she chuckled.

Maxi just stared. “Taki—are you--?!”

“Yep, six months.” Taki patted her belly.

“And who would the lucky man be?” Maxi placed his hands on his hips and smiled.

“Right here.” Mitsurugi slapped a hand on the pirate’s back, who grinned in return.

“You sly bastard.” The pirate laughed. “I would have NEVER thought of you two being together.”

“Keep it down…” Mitsurugi cautioned.

Maxi calmed down and sat on the tatami. “Soooo…what brings you to Osaka?”

“Eh…just traveling through.” Taki shrugged, silencing Mitsurugi. “We’ll tell you about our travels when we get back to our room.”

That satisfied Maxi enough and he went quiet, still staring at Ta-chan's new new look. Mitsurugi noticed and frowned slightly. The pirate walked outside, sighing; the ronin followed him while Taki finished shopping.

“Something wrong, pirate?”

“No…okay, yes. How’d it happen?” Maxi looked as if he was ready to kill something.

“Uh…do I really have to answer that? You know how…” Mitsurugi crossed his arms over his chest and raised an eyebrow.

“You know what I mean; how’d you and Taki hook up? I thought you two hated each other.”

Mitsurugi shrugged. “Love conquers all, I guess.”

Maxi sighed. “You think she’s done yet?”

“You know women…”

“I heard that.” Taki came out of the tailor’s with two bags in her arms and wearing a simple maternity kimono. She fixed Mitsurugi with a death stare; the ronin gave his best innocent look to her. She sighed. “What IS it with you and that look that makes you so irresistible?”

Mitsurugi walked over and slid his hand across the woman’s back. “Perhaps I’m just lucky.” After a brief struggle, he managed to free the bags from Taki’s hands. “A pregnant woman shouldn’t be forced to carry anything!”

“I’m not helpless…” Taki shook her head fiercely and reached for the bags. One of her hairpins fell out, freeing a lock of waist length hair. The former ninja attempted to bend down and retrieve it, but was halted by her stomach.

Mitsurugi and Maxi watched her struggle for a bit, trying not to laugh; then the ronin picked up the pin. “As you were saying?” He swept the lock of ebony hair back and pinned it.

Taki gave up; there was just no way she would win. “I give up…”

“Good! Now let’s get something to eat.” Mitsurugi handed Maxi the bags and led both to a nearby restaurant.

They ordered their meals and sat in a corner of the room. “So, tell me, what brings you here?” Maxi asked between mouthfuls of yakiniku.

“We’re hunted…” Mitsurugi whispered. “The Fu-Ma are still after Ta-chan and they will stop at nothing u she she’s dead.”

“And since Hei-chan’s with me, they’ll kill him as well…” Taki stuffed a beanroll into her mouth and followed up with a glass of water. She made a grab for the plate of yakiniku. “We had to leave to avoid that…and they’re still probably hunting us.”

Maxi had lost his appetite when after Mitsurugi had spoken. “Is there any way to stop them?”

After shoving rice into her mouth, Taki held up three fingers. “One: I could run all my life. Two: I fight her now and most definitely end up dead, along with my children. Three: I could wait until my children are born then fight Fumiko…” The ninja trailed off, knowing there was only one actual option. They would need supplies...

Mitsurugi wrapped an arm around Taki and held her. “We’ll find a way…”

*I’m sure you will, Ta-chan…* Maxi thought.

“K’SO!!” Fumiko shouted to nothing in particular.

Kenji turned around, frantically signing silently that she be quiet. It was too late; the deer—and dinner—tooed aed and galloped away. The Hunter glared and the woman lifted her chin. “What?!”

“That next week’s dinner…” Kenji motioned in the direction that the deer had so hastily departed.

“And--?” Fumiko was in a REALLY bad mood; her other prey had gotten away from her.

“Milady, you would take heart to Kenji-san’s complaints; that deer would have fed us for a week.” Yedo looked up from his meditations, his weathered face betraying the hardships he had been through. He absently traced the scar that ran from his right eye down, splitting his cheek and ending just above his jawline. Taki had given him that scar just before she had gone on her quest to find Soul Edge…she had been like a daughter to him…

Snapping back to the present, Yedo glared out of obsidian eyes at Fumiko. The woman was a waste of perfectly good ninjitsu…strong, yet weak; smart, but stupid…Taki was the perfect one…He was in this quest to help her in the long eve even if that meant to kill her quickly and rid her of MekkiMaru’s influence.

Why Toki had cast her out of the clan was beyond his comprehension, but who was he to question his master’s orders?

Fumiko stared black out of eyes a shade lighter than dark chocolate. “What the hell are you looking at, old man?”

Yedo sighed. “Enough…Kenji-san--?”

The tracker looked up. “Osaka.”

Fumiko smiled sadistically. “At sunrise…”
