Chapter 2B

"We did this to him," Ashley said.  "He was never this way before Hannah and Beth went missing."

"Yeah," Chris shook his head.  "You're right.  I mean, he definitely had issues before, but..."

Chris stopped himself when he realized how upset she was.  "Hey... it's not like we wanted this to happen.  We weren't trying to hurt anyone."

"We were trying to hurt Hannah," Ash said miserably.  "We thought it was funny!  Anyway, stop saying 'we!'  You weren't part of it."

"Yeah, I was passed out drunk," Chris said, shaking his head ruefully.  "That's was way better..."

"But you wouldn't have hurt her," Ashley said, hugging her knees up in miserable huddle.  "I know you.  I know you wouldn't have..."

Chris knew there was nothing he could say that would alleviate her guilt, and perhaps it wasn't even his place to, but he reached over to gently squeeze her shoulder, hoping to at least let her know she wasn't alone.

Ash look up at him and smiled sadly.  "You really saw the worst of me tonight, huh?"

"Anyone would have panicked dealing with all that," he assured her gently.

"I meant the video... the prank..." she admitted.  "I just hope it didn't change the way you see me too much."

Chris shook his head.  "I don't think anything could do that."

Ashley simply looked at him for a moment...  Then she patted the bed lightly, encouraging him to sit down next to her.  

Chris eagerly complied.
