Chapter Two

The milky water was steamy and loose flower petals clung to his white flesh like amethyst jewels. His long hair was wet, slicked back from his flawless face, looking darker than jet under the floating faerie lights. The little orbs were shimmering all around the underground cavern.

He stood with his slender back to Kul, smiling down into the mineral-rich water. It would only be a matter of time before the two of them would be official in front of the eyes of their people. His powers were growing and the God Tree would bloom, giving forth the sweetest of all nectar, which would be made into the Liquor of the Stars. All would then get drunk and be merry.

Muscular arms gently embraced him from behind, pulling him back against a hard body. He rested the back of his head against Kul’s broad chest. He loved how the tall warrior would hold him ever so lovingly. It used to make him blush. Now it made him feel ever so special.

“Are you tired?” Kul asked him with that deep voice of his. “Do you want to rest?”

Fand didn’t answer him. He put his pale hands over Kul’s much larger ones that were clasped around his narrow waist. He felt so warm and happy.

Steam billowed like white clouds, floating ever so lazily around the two of them. It swirled and danced, smelling of lush gardens and fruitful desires.

Fand closed his eyes, listening to the music of the Green World. The song glowed like molten gold and radiant emeralds in his mind. It was so pretty. It was the beautiful song of life. There was no other like it in the world.

“I wish you could hear it with me, Kul,” he smiled, opening his eyes, looking up at the high ceiling. It was the darkest of rock, glittering with quartz. “The song fills me with such bliss.”

Kul gently squeezed him, whispering in his left ear with a warm, tickling breath. “Can’t you hum it to me?”

Fand shut his eyes, seeing the golden waves, hearing the emerald voices. His own voice began to meld, filling the underground cavern, echoing in the mists. It was as though he was standing upon the mighty face of a massive power.

He could feel his senses creeping down, digging into that awesome power like tree roots. He felt like he was being filled with sunlight and fire, becoming one with it all.

A great cry filled his ears and he realized it was his own. He was screaming, not in pain, but in blind ecstasy. Power was flowing through his veins like magma deep under the fertile soils. He felt like a shiny star in the heavens.

“Fand!” A voice cried out in concern.

He wanted to ignore it.

The ground shook.

He could so very easily get lost in this power, letting it use him how he willed. It was singing how he couldn’t live without it. He could use it. He could use it how he willed. All of this power was his. It was offering itself to him.

“Fand!”

He wanted to drown in this golden paradise, letting the emerald sirens lull him to rest. It was so seductive. He could feel the power wrapping around him, squeezing in on him, holding him as if in a warm and vibrant cocoon. He could feel and taste those brilliant, scorching kisses upon his astral flesh.

EMBRACE ME!

His green eyes snapped open with an acidic glow. The world was mist and spinning all around him. He felt slightly mad. It was like he wanted to grab his hair and pull with all his might.

What had been that winged monstrosity enveloped in heavenly splendor? It had been frightening and most beautiful. There were no words to describe the demon’s face.

“Fand?”

He looked up into Kul’s handsome face. It was painted with frightened concern. Those blue eyes of his were like vast skies. It felt like he was going to get lost again, getting sucked up into those twin oceans over azure seas.

“Are you okay?”

He took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly. He fought to ground himself. He needed to ground himself. He had gone too deep.

“FAND!” A loud voice shouted in the distance. “WHAT DID YOU DO?”

It was Voan. She sounded scared, concerned, and angry.

What did he do? He didn’t know.

“We’re trapped!” Kul shouted back and Fand could once again feel those powerful arms around him. The feeling was coming back to his flesh. “We’re trapped in the middle of a forest, Voan!”

Fand blinked his eyes and they widened as he took in his floral surroundings. He looked from side to side ever so slowly. What had once been a massive underground hot-spring was now a forest. He was surrounded by thick trees and flowering vines. He and Kul were trapped in the midst of it.

“Kul?” He asked, finding his voice at last.

Kul squeezed him against his naked chest. “Are you okay? You were screaming.”

Fand was about to answer him, but he was cut off.

“The forest,” Kul said, looking up from him. “The forest moves.”

Fand looked, seeing that it was true. The trees and their limbs were moving in on them.

Kul held him close, trying to protect him. “It’s going to crush us.”

Nature was moving in on all sides, getting ever so close. There was no escape.

Fand’s flesh tingled.

“Stop!” He commanded, holding out his right hand.

The creeping limbs and slithering vines froze in place, bursting into bloom before him. The colors spoke to his mind.

We wish only to be near you.

He trembled. What?

“FAND!” Voan yelled.

“KUL!” The chief shouted after her.

“WE’RE FINE!” Kul shouted back.

Fand kept his hand out, looking at the flora before him. He was in shock. The forest was obeying the words coming from his mouth.

“Let Kul and me pass, please.”

His eyes widened. It was as if the very trees stepped aside, making a trail of glossy roots for them to walk upon. They were blooming and flowering, smelling of sweetness.

“The forest,” Kul whispered, taking hold of his hand. “It obeys you.”

Fand turned, looking at him. He could see wonder and awe in those eyes. Any sane guy would be scared right now. Not even Voan had this kind of power over the Green. As far as he knew, nobody but the Great Ancestor could do what he had just done.

He began to lead Kul by the hand through the moving forest. Limbs and vines reached out, caressing his naked flesh without leaving a mark upon him.

“It’s like a pet,” Kul said from beside him. “The entire forest.”

“AH!” The chief cried, covering his eyes with both his hands when the two of them stepped out of the blooming mess. “Have you two no shame? Oh, papa is so sad! Where are you clothes? Oh, the youth of today makes papa weep with such sadness, Kul!”

Voan’s thin lips were pursed. She had her arms folded across her chest. “You two have some explaining to do.”

A tree limb in the shape of a human arm and hand was gently brushing Fand’s red hair. The look on her face was of awe and anger. She looked like she had been scared and worried to death.

Fand smiled at her, promptly dropping into a green darkness.

“Fand!” Kul cried.

Kul was seated cross-legged beside the straw mat Fand was resting on. All the flowers in the room and outside the window now covered the floor, walls, and ceiling. They were blooming all over the place. It was like they were getting as close to Fand as they could without touching him.

“I’ve never witnessed such power before,” Voan was telling his father. “It is as if Fand has touched the very heart of the Blooming.”

“But, what does it mean?” The chief asked. He sounded worried. “Is the boy a danger to the village?”

Kul turned. “No!”

His father looked at him, getting ready to say something.

“Come,” Voan said, taking the chief by the arm. “Let us take this discussion to the other room.”

Kul listened to them leave and dropped his head. How could his father speak like that? Fand was Fand. He was to be wed to the most powerful Bloomer since the Ancestor. He had never seen such awesome power. Fand had made an entire forest rise and bloom all around them. The bath cavern was now an underground jungle.

He gazed at the redhead, seeing how pale and lovely he was. Fand was no longer a pretty boy. He was now a very beautiful man. His beauty was growing, like the flowers. It was as if he were blooming right before his very eyes.

The room smelled so very sweet, it was intoxicating. It was making his head feel kind of fuzzy. He closed his eyes, shaking his head a little.

“Kul?”

His blue orbs snapped open. Fand looked wide awake. Those green eyes were glowing with an emerald light.

Fand sat straight up on the mat with an eerie grace, causing the thin sheet to glide down his smooth flesh. His long hair flowed like a glossy river down his slender shoulders in streams of crimson.

“Fand?” He asked, scooting closer to him. “How are you feeling?”

Fand looked around the room. He held out his hand, making a vine creep up, causing it to bloom violet and pink in his palm. “I feel…fine.”

Kul nodded. “You scared me.”

Fand’s smile faded. It reminded Kul of an eclipse.

Fand reached for him and Kul took the smaller teen in his arms.

“I’m sorry, Kul. I don’t know what…”

“It’s okay,” Kul told him in a soothing manner. He had never had to do this before. He just hoped he was doing it right. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have asked you to hum to me.”

“I can hear their voices,” Fand whispered against him. “Their voices are so pretty…”

“Who?” Kul asked.

“The Green,” Fand said, looking up at him. “Each blossom, every blade of grass, even the tallest and oldest of trees have so much to say.”

Kul shivered. There was something in those green eyes. They looked slightly mad.

“Oh, gods!” Fand hissed, pressing his palms against his ears. “They’re so loud.”

Kul held him close. “It’s okay.”

Fand shook his head. “My head feels like its going to explode, Kul!”

“VOAN!” Kul shouted. “SOMEONE!”

Fand pushed away from him, screaming at the top of his lungs, making the whole room rattle, and the flowers to close their blossoms in what appeared to be fright.

“BE SILENT!”

The vines literally rushed from the room.

Kul blinked, looking at the redhead. The pale beauty was breathing hard. He looked around the room. There wasn’t a blossom in sight. He turned towards the window, seeing two or three vines, slowly peeking up over the wooden rim, before ducking back down.

Fand had tears streaming from his gemstone eyes. “It’s…quiet…”

Kul reached for him as the door burst open.

“What is going on in here?”

Kul looked at his father and at Voan. He didn’t know what to say. Fand had just scared all the plants away.

“Voan,” Fand said, reaching out for her as if he were blind. “I need help.”

Kul felt helpless.

“The Green,” Fand said, rising to his feet with such ease, throwing back his head. “It wants me to do things.”

“What?” Voan asked.

Kul rose to his feet as well. What was Fand talking about? What kind of things?

Fand smiled. He suddenly didn’t look like Fand at all. He looked frightening and twisted.

“What does the Green want you to do, Fand?” Voan asked the redhead.

Stems began to rise up between the floorboards, blooming at their feet.

He clung to Kul, holding onto him, trembling as if cold.

“I…I don’t know…”

“Has the boy lost his mind?” The chief asked, stepping forward. “Are you not well, Fand?”

Fand spun around, glaring with pure hate. “YOU PUNY BUGS!”

The ground rattled under their feet, causing them to fall to their knees.

“WE SHALL SMASH YOU ALL!” Fand cried.

Kul stumbled to his feet, grabbing him around the waist. The redhead fought with him, screaming terrible curses he had never even heard before. They made his skin crawl.

“WE SHALL PLUCK OUT YOUR SPINES LIKE YOU PLUCK OFF OUR HEADS!” Fand screamed in rage, struggling and hissing. “WE SHALL WATER THE SOIL WITH YOUR BLOOD!”

“Fand?” Voan asked, struggling to her feet.

Fand laughed and it was terrible to hear. His voice was distorted and sounded of many.

“Stop it, Fand!” Kul shouted over his wild shrieks of rage. “This isn’t funny!”

Fand threw back his head and screamed. It was a long howl of agony and rage. He didn’t even sound human. It was the long and mighty roar of a winged demon with shimmering scales of many colors. He fell back against Kul, sagging like a limp doll in his arms. He trembled, tears streaming from his eyes.

“Help…me…”

“I will,” Kul said, lowering him to the floor. “Just tell me what to do.”

“SOMEBODY HELP!” A loud voice shouted in fear. “THE BRIDGE IS COLLAPSING!”
