Chapter 3
"I don't care!" Hal said starting to cry a little. He turned away and sighed softly.
“He… has a point, Otacon.” Snake muttered at him. The man was elated to hear this sign that he’d live.
Hal sniffled and shook his head. "They...They don't matter to me right now…"
“You know you probably don’t mean that.” Snake told him, as he tried to reason with him.
Hal shook his head and walked out of the room to stand outside on the deck.
Snake dragged the man and tied him up so that he could wait for Hal’s decision on this before he walked out behind the man. “Hal?” he asked, now that he was out of earshot.
Hal was leaning on the railing and looking at the snow covered woods. "What?"
“I said something wrong again, didn’t I?” he asked; by now he was used to the concept that Hal was always right… It saved him some useless struggling with reality, really.
"D-Do you really want to die that badly...?" Hal asked not looking at him.
“I don’t… nobody does, Hal and I’m human too.” He explained. “But think about what he said: Do you think I’ll cause an epidemic outburst?” he asked, trying to get Hal to see his point of view, for selfish as it was.
Hal closed his eyes briefly and sighed. "Stop making me feel terrible!" he said swinging around and smacking Snake across the face.
“Baby, I love you, but you need to stop hitting me.” He muttered, although, as always, it really made no sporting difference when Snake was too aware he could turn around and snap Hal like a thread of grass.
Hal looked at him, his lower lip quivering a little. "I don't care about everyone else...I care about you.." he said softly.
“I know you do.” He said, then leaned to kiss him and took a sharp intake of air at how his heart faltered before pulling away. “But if there’s a risk that I might kill you, I’m not as strong as you, Hal.” He didn’t say it but the message was there: ‘I’m killing myself’. He thought before going back in to force that man to cure him.
Hal followed him and grabbed his hand briefly. "I-If there was a way I could keep you alive somehow. I’d do it in a heartbeat...”
“I know you would.” Snake said with a smile at him as he turned to the man, tied and whimpering. “Kind sir are you aware of waterboarding?”
“B-but I can’t swim!”
“You and I are going to become good friends.” Snake replied in a menacing tone.
Hal looked at him. "Snake what are you doing?" he asked crossing his arms and shaking his head.
Snake was smirking to his insides when the man looked terrified of him but seemed to think Hal to be the only human one of them two. “T-tell him to stop!” he told Hal, over Snake’s shoulder.
Hal smirked and shook his head. "You going to help us?" he asked crossing his arms as he followed.
“I can’t.”
“Ah… Hal, he’s lying to us.”
“I’m not! Oh Lord I’m not- Where are you taking me!?”
"The frozen lake." Hal replied. "Like he said, to waterboard."
“F-frozen… you can’t be serious!” But his eyes were already being covered by bandages so he couldn’t see. “No! Why!?” he begged as Snake pulled him outside with a towel in hand and placed him on the snow before dipping the towel in freezing water and getting the hose.
Hal laughed and nodded, watching Snake while keeping an eye on him.
“I’ll help! I’ll help I’ll do anything!” He begged as the first spray of freezing water touched his ankles. Snake then, true to his word, pulled the bandages from his eyes and lifted him to carry his whimpering form back inside.
Hal helped him. "Good. Now tell us how to stop this whole trigger thing." he demanded. "Or you get the hose again."
“I-I have to do it… we have to destroy his nanomachines…” he said, looking at Snake as if he were a guinea pig.
"Does that kill Foxdie too?" Hal asked looking at him.
“I- I don’t know…” At this Snake sighed and walked up to him with the towel. “I REALLY don’t know!”
"You better try your hardest." Hal said. "Get started!" he added.
The man jumped at this and turned to Dave as he looked around for the necessary equipment. The funny part was that Snake gave him everything he asked for and did as he was told: Which wasn’t too cautious.
Hal kept watch over the man making sure he didn't try anything.
The only thing that looked funny was the amounts of unhealthy things he was exposing Snake to and how much it hurt the mercenary to do these things.
Hal sigghed and watched dispite how difficult it was to see. "Snake you alright?"
“Nnh… yeah…” he struggled.
Hal stood by him but was careful not to get too close.
Snake was writhing horribly and he looked like he could die any minute from this… which would have been an accurate assumption.
Hal bit his lip and watched. "S-Snake it'll be ok.." he said trying to keep him calm. It pained him to see Snake like he was.
Trusting Hal’s voice alone he was able to focus on not falling asleep… he couldn’t… he had to be ok… he had to be… and with that he was near out. Apparently this man wasn’t stopping.
"W-What are you doing to him?!" Hal asked grabbing the man's arm firmly.
This forced him to stop, however, now Snake was very much unconscious and barely breathing.
Hal looked at Snake and then to the other man. "What did you do?!" he shouted.
He didn’t have to answer, Snake was showing up dead in every record and every computer: If you called through codec he wouldn’t answer, if you tried stirring his nanoes he wouldn’t even respond.
Hal rushed over to Snake and shook him a little. "S-Snake!?" he cried out. "P-Please....Wake up....!"
Snake moved and groaned but not before that man could use this chance to try to escape.
Hal quickly got up and ran after him. "Stop!" he ordered. He grabbed one of the guns and shot him in the lower leg.
Which caused the man to yell and fall over.
Hal went over and grabbed him, dragging him back to where Snake was. "You son of a bitch! What did you do?!"
Snake panted a little and moved to the side before attempting to get on all fours while using the terrified man to get up by mercilessly gripping his clothes. “H-he… eliminated my nanoes…” he said with a few pants.
"I-Isn't that a good thing?" Hal asked looking at Snake as he went to help him.
“I lost everything, Hal.” He said with a smile as if indeed it was NOTHING he couldn’t lose when it came to doing what he did next. He then leaned and kissed Hal lovingly. “Worth it…” he muttered against Hal’s lips.
Hal blushed and kissed him back holding him close. "E-Everything...?"
“Nanomachine related? Yes.” He said, turning to the man who’d attempted to run and giving a sigh. “What do you want to do with him?” he asked, too tired to decide his fate for him.
Hal helped Snake up and got him to the couch. "I don't know…"
Snake followed him blindly: Much like he’d do to the ends of the world.
Hal made sure Snake was comfortable before going over to the man. "Tell me what you did."
“I-I fried the nanomachines inside his body via radiation… Just like you told me to. It was the only way I knew from now to now.” This man looked even more terrified of Hal now than what he was of Dave earlier.
"Did it kill Foxdie too?" Hal asked helping him up to help the man's leg.
“Foxdie is… Viral… isn’t it?” he asked, already asking himself this question out of that science driving curiosity.
Hal nodded slowly and started to cut the man's lower pantleg off with somme scissors. "So I take that as a no."
“W-what are you doing!?”
"What does it look like? I'm going to fix your leg." Hal replied
The man breathed a slight sigh of relief and nodded, letting Hal do his work. “S-so you won’t kill me?”
"Haven't decided yet." Hal replied examining the wound. He dug his finger in and started digging for the bullet.
The man yelled and writhed trying to get Hal off him out of the pain, which caused Snake to absently move to where he was and reach to grab him in order to hold him down: Less the pain made him attack Hal like a cornered animal.
Hal sighed and held up his bloodied hands. "You're just going to make it worse if you move like that.”
The man breathed heavily but decided staying still and gripping onto Snake was the best thing to do. Thus he did. He held onto the soldier without the least bit of consideration that he felt so he started digging his nails onto Dave’s arms and yelling.
Hal sighed and went back to fishing the bullet out. Once he got it he sewed up the man's leg and wrapped it in a bandage.
Dave muttered something as he forced the man to hold still but other than that he was very quiet.
Once Hal was done he patted the man's leg. "There."
Said man wasn’t done complaining but right this moment he just wanted to stay alive: Horrible as it would be to witness Snake eliminating mankind via his virus.
Hal stood up and rummaged in a drawer, taking out some handcuffs. He handcuffed the man to the heavy desk. "Stay." he ordered before nodding for Snake to follow him to the other room
Which both men did without question: The hostage stayed just where he was from fear out of being killed and Dave would follow Hal anywhere, really. “Something’s wrong?” Dave asked.
“He… has a point, Otacon.” Snake muttered at him. The man was elated to hear this sign that he’d live.
Hal sniffled and shook his head. "They...They don't matter to me right now…"
