Keith
Spoilers! Skye was raped by The Boss in the last chapter. Gasp! I know. You didn't see that one coming. Here's Chapter Three. Not much action, but Four will be more interesting, I promise.
Keith yawned and kept pace in the line for breakfast. His new uniform was uncomfortable and he hadn't slept well in his bed last night wondering if Skye was alright, but it was better than being dead.
Speaking of Skye, he was relieved to see her alive, well, and serving breakfast in freshly washed clothes. Her face looked freshly scrubbed, and her hair seemed clean and wavy for the first time since he'd met her. The head guard must have honored his word of taking good care of her, after all.
The line moved, and he took his bowl of oatmeal from her. "Skye," He whispered, and she looked up at him in surprise.
"Keith?" She began to shake and quickly looked away, but he had already seen her eyes.
"What's wrong?" He demanded, still keeping his voice low.
She shook her head, and the guard pushing Keith forward from behind didn't afford him any more time to talk to her. "Stay in the kitchen. I'll come find you during my break." With that, he reluctantly let himself be pushed forward, away from Skye.
He found her chopping carrots next to an industrial-sized soup pot when he wandered supposedly aimlessly into the kitchen during his twenty-minute "smoking break".
"Skye!" He pulled her into a friendly hug after he had made sure the room was clear. "I was so worried about you. Are you alright?"
"I--" She broke off with a waver, resting her head on his chest. "I was worried about you. What did you find out?"
She hadn't answered his question, but he let it slide for now. "Nothing yet. They made me a guard and gave me supervised duties, which is fine by me. I'll let you know. What happened to you?"
Skye went back to chopping slowly, burying her head almost into her carrot pile. "I had a hot bath and got to wear a nice silk nightgown. Then I got a nice hot shower this morning and they had washed my clothes for me during the night. I..." She hesitated. "I met the guy who runs this place."
"Whoa." Keith raised an eyebrow. "He seemed like a scary guy. Did he hurt you?"
Skye shook her head, but her non-cutting hand gently (maybe unconsciously) reached up to touch her bruised upper arm. Keith felt himself getting furious at Skye for not telling him the truth, then realized it wasn't Skye he was angry with at all.
"What did he do to you?" He asked, more gently this time. "You can tell me."
She shook her head again. "I can't."
"Why not?"
Skye dropped the knife and used her pink tanktop to wipe her eyes with. "Because when I try to the words get stuck in my chest and I can't make them come out." She took a deep breath and went back to chopping. "I took a hot bath and they gave me a silk nightgown to wear. I met the boss. I got to sleep in a real bed with real pillows. I got to take another shower this morning to clean up."
Keith blinked, still confused. "Are you trying to tell me something in code?"
Before she could answer, another soldier burst into the kitchen. "What's for lunch, sweetcakes?" He helped himself to a piece of carrot.
"Soup." Skye replied. Her voice was dull and flat, which scared Keith a little. Normally she was so happy when she was cooking, especially if it was soup.
The guard grumbled and wandered to the other side of the kitchen, and Skye went back to chopping the last of the carrots. "Watch out for yourself, okay?" Keith said under his breath. "I'll see you when I get off duty tonight at seven."
Skye barely nodded as he left.
