Home coming.
I woke up what I guess was a few hours later. I was still in the same place. It was still with me. Almost as soon as I sat up I was handed a bowl of some sort of soup. Whatever it was, it was good. I felt like I hadn’t eaten in days.
When I was done, the troll pulled me to my feet and started to lead me somewhere. I managed to pull away this time, and I took off running in the other direction. It was fast though and was quickly in front of me. It blocked my path and shook it’s head vigorously. Almost warningly. It grabbed my hand and lead me the other way again. This time I couldn’t get free. I was nearly dragged down the road.
Any time anyone was seen coming our way, it would pull me off the road and we would hide. I realized it didn’t want me seen by the horde. It was protecting me from its own people.
That is when I chose to stop trying to get away. This troll was attempting to help me. Why, I didn’t know. Nor did I care. What mattered was someone was helping me.
When we would get anywhere near a town, it would take me off the road and we would give the town a wide birth.
We traveled for days before we reached a river. It would often dive into the river and eventually found a safe place to cross. We crossed the river into the barrens. It became increasingly cautious because not only did we avoid people, but creatures as well. When we slept it was atop mountains, for fear of wild animal attacks.
We eventually reached land that looked familiar. I realized we were heading to Ashenvale. In the distance I could see a large wall. Horde patrolled the wall.
“How will we get through?” I asked. The troll jumped and looked at me with surprise. It was then it hit me that we’d traveled all this time without a word. I hadn’t said anything since I had calmed down. The troll hadn’t said anything at all the entire time. I’d never heard its voice. Didn’t even know it’s name. By the confusion, I gathered it didn’t understand me either. Maybe that’s why it didn’t speak. Perhaps it felt it pointless since I wouldn’t understand it.
I pointed to the wall and the soldiers. It smiled and I got a good look at its short tusks. They looked shape and intimidating despite how tiny they were. It pointed to a broken place in the wall. It placed its thick finger to its lips, to hush me and we headed towards the broken place.
It continually looked around, more on edge than ever before. I wondered what would happen to the young troll of they knew it was helping me. Perhaps avoiding its own people was as much for its own protection as for mine.
We traveled through Ashenvale, and it set up camp in a hopefully safe place. Back in a land I felt more at home in, I slept well. I did however wake up during the night when I heard the troll shift. I watched it silently. Deep bags under its eyes spoke that it hadn’t slept at all. It’s ears, long as my own, twitched at every sound in the woods. It stared out into the darkness, muscles tense as if ready to grab me and flee if trouble were to arise. It was frightened, I could see. I couldn’t blame it. The creatures in those woods were dangerous. Even together, we’d be killed quickly were we attacked. Elves patrolled the woods, and would kill it on sight. Orcs patrolled as well, and would kill me. It had every reason to be scared. It would periodically glance back at me to be sure I was okay, then would focus on the darkness again. It remained awake the entire night, and had food ready when day broke.
We ate silently as we had the entire time. Finally I set the food aside and sat before the troll.
“Tilla.” I said placing my hand on my chest. I placed my hand on the troll’s chest and raised my eyes questioningly. It seemed surprised and confused. It didn’t quite get what I was doing. So again I placed my hand on my chest and said my name. “Tilla.” I pronounced it slowly for it then placed my hand on its chest again.
It seemed to get it this time. “Allanni.” It said slowly for me, placing its hand on its own chest. This was the first time I’d heard its voice. The troll’s voice was deeper than I expected, but was still high with youth. Its hand moved to my chest. “Tilla.” It said.
I nodded with a smile. It smiled back with a nod. “Tilla.” It said again, to itself this time as if writing it into its memory.
Without another word, we packed up and continued on our way. Finally Astranaar came into view. The troll stopped a good distance from Astranaar. It gave me a soft shove, indicating me to go. I was back with my people.
I turned and looked at the strange Troll and smiled. “Allanni.” I said. It smiled at me.
“Tilla.” It replied.
“Thank you.” I said. It didn’t understand, I could see, but I didn’t care. I hugged the troll. I felt it stiffen at the sudden contact then one arm came around and returned the hug.
I pulled away and was about to turn to go when we heard a shout. The Troll’s eyes widened in terror as it turned towards the guards that were running our way. I watched them come, not sure what to do. An arrow flew past me and I heard a grunt of pain from Allanni. I turned and saw it stagger back, an arrow in the right side of its chest. A red stain began to form on its clothes around the shaft.
“Allanni!” I cried.
The wounded troll looked at me, looking almost apologetic. It turned quickly again to the guard who had reached it. The troll’s hands went up in front of it, attempting to show it was unarmed and not a threat, but it’s attempts were ignored. A mace was swung. I heard myself scream as it made contact with the young troll’s head. Blood few and the troll hit the ground. The guard raised his mace for the killing blow. I flung myself over Allanni.
“Get out of the way, girl.” Said the guard.
“No! It saved me! I would have died.” I cried.
“It’s a troll!” The guard said.
“It saved me! I won’t let you kill Allanni!” I cried. I was pulled away. I cried for Allanni. Iwas taken into the town. I couldn’t tell what was happening. There was a lot of commotion outside but I wasn’t allowed to leave. I cried. I cried until I fell asleep. I was sure the troll was dead. Just like my parents. I was alone again.
