Chapter 3
Chapter 3
7:00pm.
After X and Palette left for their date Zero and Layer shared an awkward silence. Both were anxious, shy, and inexperienced when it came to dates and relationships in general.
Layer really wanting Zero to have fun and fall for her, decided to step up and take some initiative. She shook off her nerves and tried to act cool and calm like she did when she was navigating.
“So Zero we should get going ourselves shouldn’t we?”
“Yes, you’re right Layer. We can take my car.”
“Ok.” Layer agreed as she walked ahead leading the way. She remained close as to not go too far ahead because she did not know where Zeros car was. She frequently looked back at him and blushed. She could see him blushing as well only his gaze was focused more towards the ground than her.
Zeros car was a black sports car. It was very compact and small, but still comfortable. It was a nice car for the summertime driving with the sun roof down.
Zero got into the drivers’ seat as Layer positioned herself in the passenger seat. She turned to smile at Zero as he started the car. He saw her from the corner of his eye as he stared in confusion.
“Relax.”
“Huh?”
“I said relax you are so tense. I can tell you haven’t been on many dates, neither have I. We can take it one step at a time ok? Think of it as one of our missions at work.”
“You’re right Layer. Sorry for the silent treatment. I really do want to get to know you.”
“I would like to know you as well Zero, but before we start do you mind tell me where we are going?”
“Crap! I didn’t tell you? We are going to Maison de Ballade. It’s a real nice French restaurant in the heart of the city.”
“Sounds romantic Zero. How sweet of you”
“No big” Zero flung his arm over his shoulder nonchalantly.
A familiar silence filled the car until Layer spoke timidly “Y-you look good tonight Zero… Very handsome”
“Thanks. You look great yourself.”
Layer blushed a deep red and fumbled with her necklace “T-thank you Zero” She could tell he was starting to relax a little, so she decided to direct the topic in another direction.
“What do you do for fun?”
“I train in the Training Room, Spend time with X and/or my other friends… umm… That’s usually all I have time for because work is so demanding.”
“I understand. We all wish we could have more free time to have fun. Work does take up lots of time.”
“I don’t care. Working lots is fine with me.”
Layer gave him a small chuckle and waved her finger at him “All work and no play makes Zero a dull reploid.”
“I disagree.”
“Whatever, you don’t have to agree with me.” She smirked crossing her arms.
“Is that a challenge?” Zero asked in a sly tone of voice.
“If you want it to be.” Layer replied smugly.
“I’m never one to turn down a challenge.”
“Does this mean you’ll take some time off soon just to spite me?”
“Yes. And look at that here we are at the Maison de Ballade.” Zero parked his car and walked with Layer inside. The interior was lit with dim lighting. Dark black lamps hung from the ceiling and light purple walls gave a calm and tranquil atmosphere to the restaurant.
The two reploids walked in and were seated at their table as per Zeros reservations. They ordered their food and drinks and continued the conversation.
“Now Layer, tell me about yourself. What do you do for fun?”
“Well, I like reading books, writing poetry, watching movies, spending time with Palette and Alia… umm… I like to run I find it therapeutic, and… uh… work I guess.”
“I am not much of a book person myself. X is the academic reader and I’m the hands-on physical help if you could say that. You said you enjoy running? Me too, where do you like to run?”
Layer and Zero took some time to munch on their food before Layer answered the question.
“I like to run where there is usually nature, mostly on the outskirts of the city. I take one of the motorcycles or public transit there myself. I enjoy the solitude sometimes.”
“I hear you! Sometimes you just want to bash Signas’ teeth in just so he’ll shut up and get out of your face!” Zero gritted his teeth and clenched his right fist.
Layer gave a soft chuckle and wiped her mouth with her napkin “I guess you could say it like that.”
The server came and collected the plates and gave them the bill. Zero and Layer split the bill in half, paid, and returned to his car.
“I had fun tonight Zero. Thank you for a lovely time.”
“Yeah, I had fun too. Hey why not you and I go running together sometime?”
“Sounds great!” Layer smiled with a nod.
“Good.” Zero nodded in agreement as he revved the engine.
Zero pulled out of the parking lot and returned to Hunter H.Q.
Back in his room Zero paced around his bed. He couldn’t stop thinking about things. Yes, he had a wonderful time with Layer and she gave him the cheer up he needed, but he couldn’t help but feel that he should have been on that date with X.
X… Where was he? What was he doing? Was he having fun? Did he miss him at all? Or was he too busy to even think about him? Does he even feel the same way?
Zero sighed and decided to go see if X was back from his date yet. He walked down the empty hallway until he reached the door of his best friends’ room. He knocked once, no answer. Twice, and still no answer. The third time, and again there was no answer. With that he decided to go back to his room and go to bed.
Morning would come faster that way…
