A Supports

Vanessa/Lute A

“Confrontation”

Scene: Stables

“Out with it now, Lute.”

Vanessa had Lute caught, at last. Her hands were firmly across her chest, crossed and locked in a stern pose. Vanessa's face was painted with lines of cold anger, a rare sight. Syrene always did tease how mean glares would make waste of her good looks, like the old adage, even proposing Gilliam's engraved face as her proof.

“My, what are you talking about, Vanessa?”

Lute took a precautionary step away from Vanessa’s solid advances, keeping a safe distance from the lady knight. Although no distance would keep her safe in these stables, a real building, lent to them by the local villagers, as gratitude for shielding them against a monster invasion. Her last resort, her highly potent magic, was a dangerous alternative, as the only magic tome on hand was her copy of Elfire.

“I want to know why, Lute. Why are you trying to strike me down with magic? Do you have something against me, personally? Tell me, Lute!”

“Well, then... Being the wonderful young mage I am, my power grows each day, you see. That being the case, I have arrived on the conclusion that the pathetic little monsters we face are such a waste of my blessed ability! Don’t you think?”

“Keep talking.”

“Thus, I have transitioned to greater challenges. After much observation and experimentation, I have concluded that no other mage is nearly as powerful as I am, nor will most of them ever be. So then, my next best choice would have to be-"

“Pegasi, yes? You really are something you know? I never knew there were women like you in Magvel!”

“Why, thank you, Vanessa. But I'm afraid that such praise will not sway me.”

“Wh-what?! What are you talking about?! You…you…oh!”

She spun away from Lute. Most probably, her thoughts concerned themselves of malice and destruction, especially with that devilish grin she wore. Vanessa made eye contact with Titania, whose brown, watery eyes reflected her face back at her. Titania did nothing but watch her master's personal confrontation.

“Lute. Tell me, where did you study your magic?”

“Oh, Vanessa is asking questions about me, the genius? You must want something.”

“Lute…”

“Oh! But if you must know where I learned to utilize my innate skills… I learned at home, with my library of wonderful books.”

“What? By yourself? But how did you get so good? None of our castle mages are as good as you!”

“Why, of course! There is absolutely NO person alive who matches my talent and beauty. You would have to be a fool to think so!”

“… Of course, Lute. But… it still surprises me. I once wanted to try learning magic as well. It turned out I was no good at that though.”

“Ha ha ha!”

Vanessa jumped from her laugh, startled. She turned, regarding the purple haired girl with annoyance.

“L-Lute! How dare you laugh of my past pursuits!”

“Ha! Oh, no, it’s not that! I was trying to imagine you as a mage riding a Pegasus! I find the thought quite entertaining, do you not, Vanessa?”

“Um…I…suppose it is…interesting.”

What is with this woman?

“Vanessa, do you think I can borrow your Pegasus for a moment?”

“No! Of course not! After hearing your strange ideas? After you tried to use her for target practice? That's definitely out of the question!”

“If that’s the case… I suppose I’ll find someone else then…”

At that moment, she let her arms extend in front of her, as if she were stretching. At the tip of her fingers was a small spark that burst into a small flame of Elfire. It streamed from her hands and landed right near Vanessa's feet, toppling her over backwards.

“Oh my! A fire, you should try to put it out quickly. I’ll go find someone to help. Stay here, Vanessa.”

“Hey, wait! Lute! Ooh! That woman!”

Vanessa scrambled to the trough and scooped a bucket of water, dousing the fire in a quick, efficient manner. The fire was small, fortunately, but distracting enough for Lute to elude Vanessa again. For now.
