Chapter 3: …That ends well
Cai’s POV
The carnage was beyond description. As the Wu army charged, she and Yun fought as valiantly as they were able. Finally, the Wu and Wei armies fell back, assuming they had killed Shu to the last man. When she finally came back to consciousness, she had the bodies of several dead soldiers lying on top of her. She managed to dig herself out and noticed immediately when she tried to stand that her left leg did not want to hold her. When she looked down, she saw a huge gash in her thigh; it was so deep she was sure muscle and tendons had been cut.
She had another slight cut on her hip where she had been grazed by an arrow. The arrow had grazed her cutting a strip from her green skirt. She hissed as she limped away from the pile of bodies she had been buried under. She was amazed she was still alive, what with all that weight piled on top of her small, battered body. As she surveyed her surroundings she was dismayed; bodies were everywhere and the battlefield seemed to be naught but an ocean of blood. She wondered where Yun was, and immediately felt sad because she feared him lost in battle. She had seen him single handedly face down over one hundred soldiers allowing some of his own men to retreat. She began to dig through some of the dead trying to find her friend, or at least any evidence of what may have happened to him.
She finally sat down, her leg unwilling to hold her weight any longer. She sat down on a fallen log and buried her face in her hands and began to sob.
Here she was all alone in a strange province inside enemy territory. Left for dead by Shu, thought dead by Wei and Wu…
‘What am I going to do?’ she thought dismally. She thought she heard someone call her name, but it sounded like it was coming from very far away. She listened intently and waited for it again but did not hear it.
She went back to her thoughts trying to come up with a plan. None was forthcoming. She had never been so utterly alone before. Just thinking about how alone she was now, was making her heart break.
She caught movement out of the corner of her eye. She saw him climb out of the pile of bodies, his blood soaked spear in hand. His once white tunic was now completely red.
Her heart fluttered, and she felt joy. She got up and limped over to him as fast as she could, and threw her arms around him sobbing in both utter despondency, and joy that her friend had not been lost. She wound her fingers through his tunic and cried into his chest.
“Yun! Oh by the Gods Yun!” she sobbed. “What are we going to do Yun? What? We’re all alone…” Her sobs were hard and wracking. Her body heaved with each one. She was so happy he was alive but was resigned to the fact they were alone and knew it was only a matter of time before their enemies found them and would kill them.
When he did not speak or even hardly move she looked up at him and saw his face was as stained with blood as his cloths. His hair was dripping blood as well. He was strangely silent and she knew he had to be wounded badly.
Yun’s POV
His whole body felt like it was on fire. He knew he was hurt but he was unsure of how badly. He was aware of the great weight pushing on his body; when he opened his eyes he saw the dead features of a man inches from his face. He merely closed his eyes again and listened. He could not hear the sounds of battle and was sure that it was over. He called out for Xing Cai hoping she was alive and could hear him.
When she did not reply he assumed the worst. When he finally extracted himself from what had almost become his tomb he looked around. He had rarely seen anything like this. Bodies piled, blood ran as far as the eye could see. The earth was sludge as the blood had soaked in and saturated it.
He saw her right before she threw her arms around him and began sobbing. He was still so shocked from all that happened he could not speak or move. He felt a searing pain in his side and across his chest. His breathing became ragged and it suddenly became very hard to stand.
Finally, he found himself putting his arm around Cai’s shoulders. He could hear her speaking but he could not make out her words. In his mind the only thing that existed was pain and the world was a blur. He felt himself being lead away from the death that was strewn about him. He had no idea where she was taking him but he hoped he would be able to sit down…No he would much rather go to sleep.
He felt something warm running down his side and chest. ‘It must be from my wounds’ he thought blankly as he suddenly felt himself laying back on the ground. He was vaguely aware of his tunic being ripped off of him.
‘I…liked that tunic too.’ He thought dumbly. He wasn’t sure where he was now, but he saw stars over his head and he could no longer smell and taste blood in the air so they must be far enough from the battlefield he can’t smell and taste the death that had visited this area so very recently. He saw Cai looking down at him worriedly. He saw her lips moving, but could not understand her words. Nor could he find his voice to assure her that he would be fine. The world tilted and then became black.

I know it’s short but it’s a transitory chapter. Next chapter is going to focus on the beginning stages of the romance. There will probably be a light lemon coming somewhere in Chapter 5 or possibly 6.
