A wife's duty

Author's notes: What? there's more of these XD anyways, to NinjaGaijin, thankyou very much! I'm happy there are people out there who have also caught my references. It makes me feel all fuzzy inside ^-^ that also makes me a bit intimidated that there are ppl looking for historical accuracies lol

Intelligent Flower... I didn't explain the name! It's the girl's name... Ming - 2nd part of the word 'intelligent' in Chinese and Hua - Flower in Chinese

see I did my homework ^_^ took me forever to weed out the contradictions in all of them =# I ended up just picking the history that fits best with what I want to happen

--------------------------------------

The last time I really spoke to your mother was that day that we first crossed paths... after you ran off, your mother spoke to me.

"Xun, might I speak to you in private for a moment?"

I turned to her, quizzically. "What matters might you wish to discuss?"

She sighed a sweet breath, "Let us go for a walk." and I followed her gliding form out into the gardens. The sun shone happily and glinted off the water in iridescent sheens while the lotus blossoms gently floated amoungst the ponds. Da Qiao kept leading the way, off into another building, then she sat down.

"Xun... as you know, my husband is awful sick and is getting no better." Her head was hung, fixed on her hands. What exactly was she getting at? Sun Ce was a strong man and we have the best healers in the city if not the province. "I fear that... I fear... the one I love might..." she stopped, hicoughed with unshed tears. I reached out to her but could quite bring myself to actually place my hands upon her shoulders. She took no notice of my movement. "If anything should happen..." her head snapped up, eyes watery and tears threatening to spill from them. "Here..." Her hands reached inside her clothes and she pulled out 2 fans and held one out to me.
I gingerly took the fan from her, a little taken aback by the weight, then I opened it. It just looked like an ordinary fan, red with gold flowers, but at closer inspection, I saw the the spokes gleamed a bit and caught the light... much like a sword.

Da Qiao's other fan fell open in her hand, her next words were to it. "Iron blade spoked fans..."

I started reciting my knowledge. "A hidden weapon, favoured by women, although many men like to have it on their person in case they must be amoung 'polite' company in which carrying a sword would be rude."

She nodded, "Precisely... this pair is named 'Qiao Beauty'. I wish for you to give these to my daughter when you think it's time."

"Wait... when I- why can't you-"

Her head ducked and she held up a hand in silencing gesture. "A great war is gestating... the priests all say the same. She is learning to dance with the fans as I have with my sister... as many women have before us. When she comes of age, you give her these..."

"Why are you entrusting this to me? Why not your sister?"

"I'm not blind, Lu Xun..."

------------------------

"Oh! I did not expect to see you out here!" M wife's voice rang out to break my thoughts. I inclined my head towards her, my hands still set firmly on the wooden sill of the balcony. She looked so startled.

I smiled, "Have to get up and walk around to stretch a bit every now and again..."

She shuffled over next to me. "Yes, of course... I hope everything is going well for you and my uncles."

"We're just finalizing some plans now... such matters must bore you, do you mention them for lack of other things to say?"

"Oh no! So much seems to be happening right now and ... and I feel as if everyone is doing something to help but I'm..." Her head dropped. "I feel so useless.."

I took a step towards her and pulled her into a hug. "Don't feel that way..."

Ming Hua's muffled voice spoke up. "A woman's duty is to bear sons for her husband especially in these uncertain times..." she sniffled. "... and I refuse you in the bed-chamber."

The breeze rustled the leaves and the birds sang their sweet melodies while I held onto her. When she calmed, she pulled away.

"I'm sorry... I have bothered you enough for one afternoon." Then she ran off without a backwards glance before I could say more.

-------------------------------

That evening, I entered my room and what greeted me was my wife, once again reading a book, her maids brushing through her silky tresses. When she took notice of my arrival, she quickly sent away her maids.

"I didn't expect you to be back so early!" She stood nervously and placed her book down.

"Yes I do tend to be at my books until well after sundown but I thought to maybe take my own advice sometimes and not strain my eyes with candle-light."

"Oh! uh... well... the servants don't know you are back here yet... they won't know you are eating here." She was babbling.

"Don't worry so much, I am not starving, the servants will know to get a second bowl and pair of chopsticks when they see me here."

"I... I don't think we've ever eaten together."

"No, I suppose not."

With impeccable timing, the servants came with the trays of food to set down on our table and had already brought another bowl and chopsticks with them. I suppose word travels fast among the servants... someone probably saw me heading back and told the kitchen staff. My wife stood stiffly next to the table, not yet sitting down.

"You may start first if you like."

"Oh no! Such would be disrespectful, my husband."

Guarded as always... when will she open up to me more I wonder? It's barely been a month, after all.

We ate in silence, the servants stood unmoving behind us. Normally, their presence was completely unnoticed to me but tonight she kept stealing glances at them; ignoring the presence of the other people in the room was impossible. She picked at her food slowly and finally set her bowl and chopsticks down halfway through and declared her lack of appetite. The servants cleared our the table quickly and went to the other rooms for their dinner. I watched her twiddle her thumbs absently until the last of them shuffled out.

"I... haven't eaten dinner with anyone since my mother died..." She drooped her head a little farther. "Being a child and very lonely, I broke ettiquette and would ask my servants to eat with me... my younger siblings were barely old enough to talk or do much of anything on their own so they were taken to different rooms where the nurses could take care of them. It was so lonely without anyone and ... and well... my servants weren't family but they were always there and I never really noticed until they were all I had..."

Understanding dawned on me. So no wonder she was glancing back at them so often... "If you would like for them to join us next time, then I have no complaints."

Her head snapped up at that. "You're joking!"

"No, I'm not... I know what it's like... to be orphaned and alone..." I looked away, men should be strong for their wives... Her hand touched mine.

"Thankyou..."

We really talked then, she spoke of the good times with her parents, and I did of mine. I told her of how I helped take care of my cousins in my uncle's household and she told me of how she would help take care of hers. Time seemed to slip by and she seemed to become more and more comfortable.

"-and then I ran into cousin Ying after I ran off today! She said that she heard he father wanted to marry her off to Uncle Quan's eldest! Can you believe it? She's nearly 10 years his senior!" She giggled... like bells... like her mother...

"Well, political arrangements happen as such..."

"I don't see much political gain in that! Zhou Yu is already a solidly dedicated to Uncle Quan... he was my father's closest friend after all."

"And do you analyze all these political marriages?"

"Well... Aunty ShangXiang's was obvious... our 'princess' to their 'king', your marriage to me was to further secure your uncle's loyalty to mine... something to sweeten the dealings."

"So I see." I chuckled at that... she was rather observant. "And... how do you feel about being a 'gift' on the side?"

She shrugged. "A woman's duty is to her family..."

There she did it again... hiding behind manners and memorized verses. Her eyes dropped to her lap.
"I haven't been very dutiful to you, my husband."

My hand caressed her cheek and she slowly lifted her eyes to meet mine and tentatively, she stretched up to press her lips to mine. Standing up, she wrapped her arms around me and kissed me again. I bent down and slipped an arm under her knees and with the other under her back, I carried her to the bed and gingerly stretched out above her. As I bent down to kiss her again, she placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Wait..." She pushed me onto my back and straddled my waist. "Can I try it like this?"

I nodded and she took a deep breath before reaching down to undo my clothes.

When we were both nude, she shivered as she sat atop me. She then leaned forward to lie down over me and put her head under my chin, her face in my collarbone and I felt her cry. My hands to her shoulders and I stroked them in small circles. "You don't have to-"

"But I have to... I want to..." I heard her muffled reply. Once again she took another deep breath and reached down to guide me into her. I sighed in content as she slowly lowered herself onto me; sheathing me inside. We both panted and she look up at me, her mouth opened in a perfect o and she closed her eyes and slowly tilted her head back as her body moved atop mine and I could tell she was not feeling pain.

"Oh... " She moaned and shuddered and kept going at the same, excruciatingly slow, pace.

My hands wandered down to her hips to try and guide her into going faster.

On and on we went, speeding up more and more until I reached my peak and she, hers. Collapsing on top of me, she breathed heavily and gently soothed her back.
