Chapter 3:
Snow
2 Months Later: Christmas Eve
Ah, there is nothing like a night filled with the smell of snow. Which, yes, in my senses snow smells. Wonderful, might I add. It’s crisp, clean and just…refreshing. Now this, this is one of my favorite holidays. I had to open all the windows in the building, I love the cold. It feels just right on my skin. Hence why my room is the coldest in the house. I also had to open all the windows to annoy the crap out of Dante, he’s got a cold now. Which, that only made me laugh and grin every time he slouched out of his room.
But tonight, he’s downstairs by the fire. Drinking that weird, nasty eggnog crap. Ugh, it’s disgusting, to me, it tastes like rotten milk and stale liquor. But there he is, slurping it down like a mad man. Which the weird part it, it takes a lot to get him drunk. But that’s beside the point. Tonight is Christmas Eve and it’s snowing out, a nice breeze through the office and…dammit, the only company in the whole place is…him.
I sighed as I slumped down the stairs into the office, wearing a brisk pair of pajamas and house-slippers. And there was Dante, in front of the fireplace wrapped up in a blanket with a bottle of that disgusting junk between his lips. I smirked to myself, shaking my head as I looked over to the rather, too large Christmas tree that had a few selective presents under it.
“Dante.” I murmured, sitting down next to him with another sigh escaping from my lungs. Receiving a usual grunt as he put the bottle down on the rock-made chimney, waiting for him to respond which took a few moments. “Lady.” He whispered, staring at the flames before turning his head down to look at me. Well, I could at least feel his eyes on me, I didn’t look up though. I kept staring straight ahead, grabbing something small from my pocket, which was badly wrapped in ‘Santa paper’. I didn’t even look up when I held it up to him, feeling his warm fingertips against my palm as he took it.
I listened to him unwrap it, tossing the colorful paper into the fire, making me slightly smile at the sight. He stopped breathing just for a second before chuckling lowly, “My amulet?” He whispered, questioning the reason I wrapped it up.
I just nodded with an absent shrug, “Yeah, I got a new chain for it and ah...polished it and stuff.” Well, that was a real well put together sentence right there, I sounded like a fifth graded giving a boy a lollipop. Which, by the way, NO, I am not attracted to this filthy vermin, I just thought it would be a nice thing to do is all. No weird, lovey-dovey things in mind. Though, I stiffened up when I felt him wrap the blanket around me, pulling me against his side. “Dante.” I whispered with a small hitch in my breath, not from him touching me! No, it was just a shock, that’s all. Yep, just a shock.
“Thank you.” I heard him whisper softly, the rumble from his voice echoing off his ribs where my ear rest against his chest. I frowned, biting into my bottom lip before shoving him off with a punch into his arm, “Hey, now. Don’t get all weird on me.” I chuckled, nervously, bringing a hand up to ruffle his hair. Those lips of his curled into the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen produced on anyone’s face…Wait, no, no, no. Hold the phone, I mean, ah. Like, you know, one of those paintings and stuff.
He nodded before leaning over to grab a present out from under that horridly-decorated tree. Which, mind you, looks like a bunch of hyperactive kids supped up on sugar got to it. I stiffened again as I felt him place a small box in my lap, making me blink a few times down at it. “What? For me?” Well, jeez. No shit, Lady. I mean, come on. It’s in your lap! I got a hefty chuckle in response to that lame statement of mine, “Yeah.” He whispered, nudging his head against mine.
I swear, I could just feel the heat rising on my cheeks or maybe it’s just the fire, yeah. The fire, that’s it. I shook my head as I peeled the paper back, also throwing the remains into the blazing embers. I blinked a few times, a bit confused as I picked up the small trinket box. It was covered in glass, jewels and silver, which made me wonder. Where in the world would Dante, of all people, get this kind of thing. I shook the thought off as I opened it open, my eyes welling up to hear the small tinkling music that I heard through out the whole time of being in Temin-Ni-Gru.
“Dante...” I whispered, staring down at the box, blinking the tears out of my eyes which only ended up rolling down my cheeks. I flinched slightly as I felt his skin touch my face, wiping away the salty droplets. I heard him purring softly inside his chest as he wrapped his arms back around me, making me shiver slightly. “You just had to leave all the windows open, didn’t you?” He chuckled, making me do the same. I nodded slightly, sniffling with a smirk, “Yeah, I did.”
I leaned into him, which, I know, I shouldn’t have. I should have gotten up and just went to my room or something. Done anything but lean on him. But I did, I leaned against him, letting him wrap the blanket and his arms around me. He smelled like jasmine, for a demon, he actually smelled good. I expected brimstone or something. I just sat there, holding that small box against my chest and laying my head on his, listening to him breathe.
“Merry Christmas, Lady.”
