Chapter Three:
The Hunt
“What on Nosgoth is going on?” muttered Raziel to his
brother, Dumah, as they waited to enter their master’s chamber.
“Not a clue. Ask Zephon,”
“He’s been all mysterious and wacko,”
“We’ll find out soon enough,”
Raziel sighed a dead sigh. They’d all heard the rumors, of
course. Of the female Vampire, with hair like sunlight and eyes like stone. Of
the ash and death that spread in her wake.
Fairytales, he thought irritably, an excuse for
inadequacy with watch
S
Still.
The doors finally opened, and with great trepidation did the
six lieutenants enter their ‘fathers’ presence.
Kain was sitting in his throne, leaning forward on his
knees, inspecting his six ‘childer’,
“As the wheel turns so, too, do the cards flip. It appears
that our carefully made house is being collapsed by a willful child,” Kain was
as cryptic as ever.
“So the rumors are true?” asked Dumah.
“Indeed. The Vampires murders are not restricted to
Vampires. She attacks both immortal and human-already she is deep within
Zephonite territory,”
“She killed five Vampires on guard at the bridge over the
Abyss,” said Zephon, mouth down turned. “She leaves no tracks or trail. But for
the bodies and stories, she may have never been there,”
“And your evidence that she exists and it is not merely a
maddened human?” Raziel raised an eyebrow archly, “We’re growing slack, after
all,”
“That as may be, but at least one Vampire managed to make it
back and report her appearance before he died. It appears that she used some
power over the shadows to save her from an early death in the Abyss, as well as
retrieve that peculiar sword of hers,”
“So it’s true, then? She can form corporeal shadows?”
“It does appear that way,”
Kains brow was furrowed with a scowl.
“Find her and bring her here,” he snarled, evidently more
than slightly annoyed, “I want her dead!”
The lieutenants bowed before leaving.
“Any idea where to start?” enquired Melchiah.
“Let’s head to Zephon’s territory and search her out,”
Raziel suggested.
“And how will we find her?” asked Zephon, “Excuse me for
sounding arrogant, but I do have quite a bit of territory to cover,”
“Follow the corpses, little brother,” said Rahab, almost
mockingly.

Rahab’s idea was not unfounded. The Vampire seemed to care
little as to whether or not people found her.
“It’s like she wants us to find her,” said Rahab,
shaking his head.
Raziel stared quietly at the four piles of ash that had been
Zephon’s sentry.
“Maybe she does,” he mused.
“What?” Turel looked incredulous, “Why on Nosgoth would she
want us to find her?”
“How would you kill a sentry without alerting the gate?”
“Easy,” mocked Zephon, “Lure them out,”
“And that, my brethren, is exactly what she is doing,”
There was silence for a moment.
“Then do do we do?” asked Melchiah.
“I have an idea,” said Zephon, his smile almost a smirk,
“Two can play at this game. Leave our darling a little trail to us. Take the initiative.
If these corpses are right, she is but half a day from my sanctum. We shoot at
her and see her reaction. If we’re right, she’ll charge in, banners flying to
try and rid the world of us,”
“Then we go out to meet her,” what stretched Dumah’s mouth could
not be classified as a smile. “I like it,”

Faith stared at the wall, disgust evident.
A cathedral. A bloody cathedral for a sanctum. Filthy
things.
Sliding into the shadow, she began to slide g thg the wall,
edging carefully towards the main door.
Destroy the door and enter. Divide and conquer; it’ll take
a while for these archers to reach me, after all. And they think they’re being
stealthy!
A hand gripped her arm and held it against a wall. A coldly
handsome face smiled, fangs catching the light as seized her other arm.
Raziel smiled triumphantly.
“Look what the cathedral brought in,”
