Innocent Sorrow. Part 5 of 5

Alright, and today I'm adding the last part of vampire!Kyo's backstory. More so, I needed to do extra research on this part because, spirituality and Mina don't exist in the same sentence x'D That's why for a better touch, I had to do actual research about the nuns - yup, from how to become a one, their duties and daily routine, lastly how each of the outfit are called.
At first, I was very negative and skeptic about it and prepared for aggravating and exhausting research - -'
However, after reading articles and interviews in my native language, I unexpectedly realized how nuns and nurses are not that different. More important, the first nurses were actual nuns, who were taking care of ill and sick, however, as time goes on, soon the first nursing schools were opened.
Dear, even these traits, which are required to become a nun are actually the same one, you would expect any nurse to have, if you think about it more deeply.
My, after doing this research, I was rather fascinated at learning something new! ^^ So, this what happens when you start to work on something that maybe completely out of personal comfort-zone...
That's why I do hope that I'm not that off about it on this chapter.
More important, in this chapter there would be also explained how this vampire got his ability to hypnotize his prey by using the voice until he lost it thanks for that encounter against incubus!Orochi.
Anyway, as always,
Enjoy!

Meanwhile, outside one monastery dormitory, a young maiden in her early twenties manages to sneak out without getting noticed and heads to the small town to visit an old friend.

She knows she’ll be scolded by the elderly nuns for leaving at such a late hour, but she still decided that personally giving a birthday present and greetings to her close friend is far more important than resting before tomorrow’s duties.

That’s right; even at such a young age, this maiden is already a nun who gave her oath to the god and the church.

Besides, she was raised by a group of kind and merciful nuns ever since she was a baby. So, growing in this environment didn’t scare her, and eventually she consecrated her life to being a servant of the god.

But for now, the nun with blue eyes, named Goeniko, checks on her basket, which is covered in a white cloth, to make sure she hasn’t forgotten about her baked pie.

After lifting the cloth, she is relieved to see that the apple pie is in one piece despite her climbing off by her made-out-of-bedsheet rope from the third-floor window.

Lastly, Goeniko picks up the flashlight and turns it on before lowering the cloth and continuing on her way.

Nearly an hour passes by. Finally, the nun reaches the town, but the disturbing scenery makes her drop her basket, and her knees give up on her.

Apparently, the streetlamps illuminate the walls that are covered in blood, and the rivers of the dark crimson liquid are either running or have soaked into the stony pavement and road.

It seems that no one was spared by the gruesome killer: neither men, women, nor even children.

After Goeniko stands up and picks up her dropped basket, she grips the silver rosary around her neck and navigates through the piles of corpses lining the street.

On her way, she whispers to herself to stay strong and find her friend, who, hopefully, may not yet have been spotted by the killer.

While navigating through the town, she notices that some villagers have terrible slashing marks on their bodies as if they were done by a large beast or are missing limbs.

But she is curious whether the massacre was done by the hand of feral beastkin, human, or even the devil himself.

As Goeniko goes deeper into the town, she continues ignoring the most obvious warning signs and walking into the beast's claws.

After wandering for a while, she reaches the town square and meets the first living creature in this slaughtered place.

Apparently, it’s a young man soaked from head to toe in the blood, sitting and leaning his back against the monument statue’s block.

Is he the only remaining survivor of the massacre? Goeniko wonders when she carefully approaches the brunette.

When she kneels in front of Kyo, he presses his palm against his face and covers his eyes.

As the brunette quietly growls, Goeniko gently rests her palm on his cheek. “Are you alright? Can you get up?”

A moment later, she hears Kyo begging. “Don’t… Don’t come any closer to me. You… you’ll get hurt too. Get away from me!”

Suddenly, Kyo shrieks and unleashes a slashing strike at this unfortunate soul.

However, the nun instantly withdraws, and only pays off with her cut coif and veil falling on the ground, revealing her long blonde hair with a slightly waved fringe.

Now, the blonde holds her breath and widens her eyes at how close she was to tasting the nocturnal creature’s razor-sharp claws.

After a second, Kyo unleashes an upper slashing attack at her, but she closes her blue eyes and rolls away.

When the brunette starts panting, Goeniko opens her eyes and notices how the vampire is hunching his back while his face is twisting in pain.

The poor creature only covers his face while shrieking and whining. “Nooo!… Leave. Leave my body! I-I don’t want thiiisss!”

The nun wonders if this poor boy is possessed by an evil spirit and fighting for his life.

If that’s the case, she understands she has to help him, even if she has to finish him off and release the brunette from his suffering.

She doesn’t know if she can do this, but as long as she has her silver rosary, Goeniko has no reason to be afraid.

After the blonde stands up, she stares at the vampire and listens to his desperate pleading. “Run! Why are you still here?! Run… Run before it’s too late!”

Of course, the pathetic creature’s screaming and begging terrifies her.

Yes. She can feel how her body trembles and wanting to run away and cry.

Despite that, she tightens her lips and walks toward the brunette, hoping to save his unfortunate soul.

Although her kind wishes are dismissed by the horrific creature of the night.

Now, Kyo charges at the blonde nun with another slashing strike.

Suddenly, Goeniko falls on her knees and closes her eyes while extending her arm at the vampire. “NOOOO!”

Just as she expects to meet her doom, something else happens instead.

She can sense a blowing wind that rustles her long golden hair.

However, she is shocked that she is alive. On the other hand, she is not as surprised as after opening her eyes and seeing the knocked-out vampire lying on his back.

Unfortunately for her, Kyo finds strength to stand up and prepares for another attack, even if it seems someone is holding him back.

Is he trying to resist the evil force that is controlling him? If I could summon my powers again, I could definitely weaken this creature and use the rosary. The blonde thinks.

When she frowns and her eyes fill with determination, she stands up and stretches her arm at the vampire and addresses him. “Repent for your sins!”

After lowering her arm, she lifts her palm again and makes a strong whirlwind appear and rush at the nocturnal creature.

However, Kyo is too slow to dodge the new threat and gets caught by the furious wind.

When the brunette is lifted and twisted high in the air, he feels the countless cuts on his body.

Although he cannot move even a single finger and is forced to endure the sharp pain.

A couple of moments later, the blonde immediately lowers her palm, causing the whirlwind to harshly toss Kyo to the ground.

Just as Goeniko is about to summon the wind again, she becomes dizzy and drops on her knees.

While she heavily breathes, she lowers her head and holds her arm.

After all, it’s rare for her to use her power, which she hides from the church.

After regaining her breath, the nun lifts her head and watches the unconscious young man. Or at least she hopes he’s like that.

When she receives no response from the vampire, she closes her eyes. “Good.”

After approaching him, she kneels and checks on Kyo.

Apparently, while the brunette’s chest bloats and tries to say something, his crimson eyes are returning to their former color, and his fangs disappear.

Surely, the blonde nun almost feels bad for him, even if she knows whom she fought just a few seconds ago.

However, when Kyo begs someone to live and never haunt him ever again, Goeniko removes her rosary and brushes his hair from his face, addressing him in a gentle voice. “Poor boy. May the Lord bless you. Rest in peace.”

After she presses the silver rosary against the brunette’s forehead, she keeps it until the nocturnal creature lets out a final gasp.

When the blonde nun places her fingers on the vampire’s throat and senses his weak pulse, she is relieved.

Now, after putting the rosary back and looking for her basket and black veil, she fixes it without bothering to cover her fringe while holding the basket in another hand.

But for now, when Goeniko returns to the vampire’s side, she is trying to figure out how to pick him up.

After throwing the brunette’s arm over her shoulders and standing up, she comments. “Oh my, you are not a lightweight fellow, are you?”

When she rolls her eyes, she murmurs. “It should be the other way around, though.”

In the end, the blonde decides to return to the dormitory without much caring about being scolded by Sisters Rachael and Annette for sneaking out.

An hour passes. Finally, the blonde nun reaches the dormitory’s door. Of course, she could have arrived earlier if it wasn’t for carrying the vampire.

Now, she knocks on the wooden door and waits for anyone to let her in.

A couple of minutes pass by, and she hears behind the door the approaching footsteps and someone unlocking the door.

Apparently, it’s a woman in her fifties, wearing a white, long-sleeved nightdress and cap and holding a flashlight.

Now, she scolds the blonde nun. “Sister Goeniko, what are you doing here at a time like this? Aren’t you supposed to be resting in your room?”

Noticing the blood-covered young man resting on Goeniko’s shoulders, she widens her eyes. “Wh-who is this young man?”

However, the blonde nun explains while keeping a straight face. “Something terrible has happened in the nearest town. All I could see was the endless sea of blood and countless lost souls. Sister Annette, we need to treat him as soon as we can. Maybe it’s our Lord’s will to show his love through our deeds to this poor boy.”

Despite having a lot of questions at the moment, seeing the wounded brunette is the bigger concern for her.

When Annette closes her eyes and sighs, she calmly replies. “Alright. Then let’s carry him inside and call more people to help us.”

While carrying Kyo, both enter the vacant room, and Goeniko addresses the older nun. “Sister, there’s one thing that I forgot to say.”

When they bring the brunette toward the bed, this woman gives her a questioning look.

Now the blonde nun asks. “He might be sensitive to the sunlight. Or at least he may not like to rest when it is too bright. So, can we keep the curtains shut during the day? If our guest says they want to, we can open them.”

Meanwhile, another couple of nuns make the bed and prepare water for the wound cleaning.

After laying unconscious Kyo in bed, they start removing his dirty clothes.

Now, Goeniko addresses every nun in the room. “I really appreciate your help and effort, but you can go rest. Don’t worry, I’ll handle the rest, and if I struggle, I will ask for your help.”

It seems the blonde nun’s words surprise everyone, and one tall nun in her thirties gently replies. “It’s alright. You are also already working hard. So, you shouldn’t forget to take care of yourself too.”

Surely, Goeniko is not happy with this response. When she closes her eyes, her temple vein twitches. Just agree before I shut your small mouth, you stupid dimwit.

But she manages to disguise it under a warm smile and politely responds. “It’s fine, Sister Tessa. I can handle this. Besides, I woke you up in the middle of the night and disturbed your sleep. So, let me take responsibility for that.”

When the same tall nun drains the wet towel, she softens her look. “If you say so. However, don’t forget that you are not alone and you can rely on us.”

After the nuns leave the room, Goeniko closes the door and leans her back against it.

But for now, she closes her blue eyes and exhales.

Finally, she can study the brunette. And it’s not every day you can encounter a legendary bloodthirsty monster and observe it closely.

Of course, the blonde is curious about her vampire. Thus, she decides to check on his wounds and see whether they are healed.

Besides, what else are these nocturnal creatures capable of? There are so many things to discover.

And with a pure excitement, Goeniko walks close to the night table, where rests the water bowl with a towel in it.

After draining the small towel, Goeniko starts with wiping Kyo’s face.

It seems the burn marks that were left by her silver rosary are gone as if he was never touched by it. On the other hand, his skin becomes irritated by water.

Aside from that, another thing that catches the blonde’s eye is how all the cut wounds from her summoned whirlwind disappear too, leaving only dried blood traces on his skin.

Nonetheless, it’s fascinating how these filthy creatures are blessed with rapid healing ability. Or so the blonde thinks while keeping a content smile.

Too bad there’s so little time left before the sunrise. But it cannot be helped then… Goeniko closes her eyes and sighs.

On the other hand, as soon as the first sunbeams appear, the blonde will test another myth about vampires. For now, this boy should just rest while he still can. Or so she decides with a smile on her face while taking out the water bowl from the room.

Several days have passed by. It is a sunny and bright morning, and the sky is so blue that only a couple of fluffy clouds as fresh as picked cotton balls are passing by.

However, the uplifting bird singing is interrupted by the ringing church bells.

That’s right; it is the time for the morning prayer in the church, which is located on the west side of the city and warmly invites anyone to listen to their Lord’s word.

After people are gathered and take free seats, they wait to start a prayer.

When the priest and a group of nuns show up, the crowd fixates their gaze on one nun. Even the atmosphere around this pure and innocent young maiden is so serene and warm.

One can even mistake her for an angel in nun’s clothing, who is like sent from the heavens to bless simple folks by her gracious presence alone.

After she faces the countless believers, they are mesmerized by her kind, bright blue eyes that are filled with Holy Mother’s love and her gentle-featured face.

However, when the priest approaches the altar while being surrounded by nuns, the Mass begins with the foreword to the introduction.

Even if simple folks are singing the introductory song along with the priest and the choir of the nuns, they are fixated on listening to the blue-eyed maiden’s voice, which is like a divine blessing coming straight from an angel’s lips.

And this is how another Sunday starts at this sacred place.

On the same day. It’s a calm evening accompanied by the setting sun that soon will be completely hidden by the forest.

The warm beams of the orange sunbeams are breaking through the stained-glass windows of the church and reach the statue of the Holy Maiden and the very concerned young nun, who is holding a silver rosary and praying to it with her closed eyes.

After ending the prayer, the peaceful moment is disturbed by the call of a middle-aged woman. “Ah, here you are, Sister Goeniko. Have you finished the evening prayer? Should we return? It’s nearly time to prepare a dinner.”

When Goeniko faces the older nun, she replies. “Sure. Just a second, Sister Rachael.”

With these words, she plays along and follows the middle-aged woman. But for now, she cannot wait until all works are done and everyone falls asleep.

After all, the blonde nun is planning to test a theory about how quickly vampires can regenerate the lost limbs or reattach them and whether the cuts made by the silver blade do not heal.

Besides, she is curious if the vampire she brought will finally wake up tonight or if he will still be slumbering.

A few hours have passed. The platinum moonlight is shining bright at the nun dormitory, and only rustling tree leaves disturb the divine peace tonight.

It’s also the time when one blonde girl wakes up. Now, her only concern is not to wake her roommate up.

After picking up the flashlight from under the pillow, Goeniko switches it on and looks for her black veil.

When she puts it on, she looks for one specific item under the pillow.

That’s right; a day after she brought Kyo into the church, she had a visit from one vampire hunter, who asked for the holy water.

That’s why the blonde nun didn’t miss her chance and had a brief chat with him.

After making innocent big, blue eyes, she requested him to give her a silver dagger in exchange so that she could protect herself from evil spirits.

Thus, on another day, Goeniko got the silver blade, which she keeps a secret from the others.

But for now, after Goeniko picks up the dagger, she sneaks out from her room and carefully heads to the staircase.

Surely, such a “stealth mission” even slightly thrills the blonde who reaches the staircase.

When she climbs down to the first floor, she searches for the guest room, where the nocturnal creature sleeps.

After finding the right room, she opens the door and turns on the lights.

Apparently, the brunette is peacefully asleep and doesn’t show any signs of waking up.

Now, Goeniko delightfully closes her eyes and approaches her little test subject.

Finally, it’ll be a perfect chance to put her theories into practice.

When she picks the silver blade into her hand, she sits next to the sleeping vampire.

“Where should I start?” The blonde tells herself in an innocent voice while pointing the tip of the dagger from Kyo’s belly up to his chest.

Now, she pauses her movement. “Should I start with the chest and see if unholy creatures like you have a beating heart or just a rotten soul?”

Just when the blonde nun aims to stab the vampire’s chest, her face becomes pale and she widens her eyes.

Apparently, someone is gripping her wrist and making her drop the dagger on the floor.

A moment later, it is followed by the alerted brunette’s voice. “And what do you think you’re doing with that thing?”

When the lying vampire takes a better look at his attacker, he gives a questioning look. “Wait… You look familiar. Who are you, and where am I?”

After sitting up, Kyo glances at himself and notices that he doesn’t wear anything under the blanket.

When he tilts his head the brunette asks in a concerned tone. “What have you done to me when I was asleep, and where are my clothes? Don’t tell me that you did something shady to me…”

The blonde nun only cracks a smile and indignantly looks at the nocturnal creature. Now, she shakes off the vampire’s held wrist and keeps her hand close to her. “Keep your filthy hands off me!”

Despite the vampire’s confused look, Goeniko remains calm and adds in a strict tone. “Are you having impure thoughts, you foolish boy? Whatever it is, I do not want to hear it!”

Now, she raises her palm and shows a golden ring on her ring finger. “Can you see this? Look. I already have given the oath to the Lord and offered to Him my body and soul. So, your earthly desires do not concern me.”

Surely, Kyo is even more confused by this girl’s words, and he responds. “Calm down, miss. I don’t know what you are talking about, but you are giving me a headache. So, chill out and relax.”

However, it is followed by the blonde scolding him. “All I did was take care of you, you ungrateful fool! And this is how you pay back? You better be grateful, because I was merciful to let you live and kept in silence about who you were, vampire. Otherwise, who knows how it may end?”

When Goeniko makes a proud look, Kyo starts rubbing his nape and responds. “I don’t know what your problem is, miss. Or what grudge are you holding against me? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate you knocking me out with that nasty cross, because it helped me to return to my senses. But why did you go through all this trouble just to stab me now? If you wanted to kill me that badly, you should have done it during our first encounter.”

The blonde nun bites her lower lip and fires back in a serious tone. “Keep your foul talk to yourself. Since your kind is feared by many and has been forsaken by our Lord, I wanted to learn what was so terrifying about you and why your existence alone was a sin. Moreover, learning what can hurt or weaken you will help get rid of you. So, you should be more than willing to assist me and be a sacrifice for the science.”

The vampire only facepalms and shakes his head. “Why even you, church people, have to come up with this bullshit and act like saints by killing anyone you dislike? Give me a break.”

It’s the last drop of Goeniko’s patience, and she aggressively climbs on Kyo.

After pushing him down on the bed, the blonde uses her rosary to wrap it around the nocturnal creature’s wrists.

Lastly, Goeniko picks up the lying dagger from the floor and holds it in her hands, ready to stab the vampire’s heart.

However, suddenly, Kyo’s voice echoes inside the blonde’s head, making her widen her blue eyes. “Cut it out!”

Surely, the vampire’s voice is so powerful that it manages to reach every single cell of Goeniko and freeze her in the same spot.

At that moment, she is unable to move even a single muscle, no matter how hard she forces herself.

More importantly, she feels how her body doesn’t belong to her anymore.

Is this vampire trying to kill me?

All Goeniko can do is stare right into Kyo’s crimson eyes without a single movement.

Meanwhile, the brunette is also shocked by what just happened now.

However, he gathers all the strength and will he has and tears apart the silver rosary.

After he sits, he lowers the blonde nun’s arms, making her drop the dagger again.

Strangely, despite the shocked look on her face, she doesn’t resist at all.

Although Kyo can sense how deep inside she is trying to break free from this curse.

Now, the brunette softens his gaze and calmly addresses her. “Enough. You think that you are doing God’s job by killing and covering behind his name. But you’re just making yourself look worse than whom you despise. If I’m not mistaken, you humans believe some god has created everything and you were taught to love and cherish all his creations, right? If so, he made us too. So, why are you treating someone better and someone else like they are unworthy for even breathing? More importantly, you nuns are known as merciful sisters, who are supposed to be kind and caring… I’m not going to get into deeper talk. So, I’ll leave it to you to think about it.”

While Goeniko remains under the nocturnal creature’s spell, all she can do is watch Kyo leave the bed and look for his clothes.

After the brunette checks the closet, he finds his clothes, which seem to be fixed and washed.

Once he puts them on, Kyo walks to the window, which is next to the bed, and opens it.

Before climbing through it and leaving, Kyo bids a farewell to Goeniko.

In the end, once the blonde is left alone, she finally regains control over her body.

But for now, when she lowers her head, the bitter tears run down her cheeks.

Goeniko has never felt so defeated and vulnerable in her life. Even if she cannot stop herself from crying, she wishes to become strong to put creatures like that vampire into their right place. Even if she needs to train her wind power for that sole purpose.

Meanwhile, Kyo is already far away from the church territory, but he tries to figure out how and why that girl was paralyzed by his risen voice. Surely, it wasn’t just out of fear, right Otherwise, she would be trembling but still wanting him dead.

However, deep inside, Kyo fears that maybe that dark entity, who calls himself Kusanagi, is just messing with him.

In any case, he decides to test if that was just pure luck and coincidence. Or perhaps it’s his newly gained ability to paralyze his victims by his voice.

So, guess, who have lot of fun working on this character and accidentally finding this maiden as Mina's new spiritual animal? xD

Yup, even when for the first time I've seen Goeniko being introduced in KOF98 UMOL back in the day, I was really having a bad opinion about her and even treated her as ''joke character'', and how dare she being better tier and stronger fighter than Orochi-sama (boi, Mina surely wasn't so warm and welcoming~ xDD). Personally, I thought that it was just a cheap fanservice and another OP boss fighter - -' However, after a couple of years and during that time when I was working on these chapters where Kain makes first appearance, I thought ''okay, but why vampire!Kyo is so afraid of him, and what happened between these two? ''. So, while planning the rough idea of Kyo's backstory and thinking of what could possibly this vampire could do to get such a big bounty on his head, I thought that all that incident with Kain and that slaughter scene, maybe could just be started by a death of a random person. So, I decided ''okay, Goeniko is annoying, let her be a sacrificial lamb and be a trigger of the tragedy - -' ''

And thus, kept this kind of mindset until accidentally learning about the origins of this character, I was surprised - so, Goeniko wasn't only a thing, which devs of KOF98 UMOL made of. Yup, and this is how Mina learned about SNK vs Capcom: Chaos and one wonderful thing called - Moonlight Bliss.

However, only before actually working on vampire!Kyo's backstory I realized ''okay, but who helped this vampire return to his senses? There must be some kind of spiritual/divine interface...'' So, in the end Mina told ''Screw this, I'll give Goeniko another chance. So, maybe by some kind of miracle I may change my take on her, if not, then at least it will be a good practise.''. And thus started research about nuns and their actual duties and routine.

In the end, even if it was my first time working on Goeniko, but now I feel so attached to her and changed thoughts about her drastically xDD.

However, this is a second time having this kind of feeling when only in the working process, you can discover that maybe secretly you liked something, but did not realize until you give a go... So, personally, I sense that she may return again, but more matured and grown as character yet for better or worse, we'll see. Maybe she should show up in the next arc, which gonna be dedicated to incubus!Orochi-sama ^^

A-anyway, now since vampire!Kyo's backstory is over and before working on new chapters of Vampire's Kiss, I'm going to work on this year's 3.25 project. So, what kind of surprise this redhead will receive this time? Hmm, let's see...
But for now, thank you for reading and as always - See you next time!~
