Chapter Twenty-Eight: Death Of A Secondary Character
Something was horribly wrong. Breech could feel it rising up in her bones as soon as they returned to the village.
The Secret Service jerks investigating James’ wide-open house didn’t help either.
“What’s going on here?” Breech asked James.
“I don’t know,” James growled, “But I’ll find out. Look after this,” he handed her the emerald.
“Excuse me?” someone tapped Breech on the shoulder, and she turned to look at a tatty yellow bird, “Excuse me, are you miss Bridget Loranski?”
“What’s it to you that I am?” Breech asked him, scornfully.
“You’re needed at the hospital. It’s urgent.”
When James turned, there was an abrupt lack of Breech.
~~~
“Nack,” Breech clutched his paw. He looked awful, “Oh, gods…”
“Breech…” the purple weasel gasped, “Cur’s got the red gem…”
“The Red Emerald? How?” Breech asked him. Since the two could read each other like a book, she glared, “Nack…”
“Sorry… it was so big and... shiny…”
“You’re a moron.”
“I… know… listen… this is more important than the gem. Cur… he took Keith too…”
Breech’s eyes widened, “No!” she gasped.
“Breech… he wants the emeralds… all of them… Or he’ll… do horrible things to Keith…”
“Then I’ll-“
“No! No…” Nack panted, “I know… I can’t stop you from going after him… but please… don’t be stupid… we know what he’s like…”
“Yes,” Breech nodded.
“He wants you to go to Robotropolis… with the emeralds… but not tell anyone… you KNOW what he’ll do… Please do something to limit the damage…” Nack coughed up some blood.
Breech’s eyes filled with tears, “Nack, please, please don’t die on me… remember that time in the Mystic Ruins? I got shot with a poisoned arrow, but you dragged me back to base…”
Nack nodded.
“And then there was the time you nearly drowned in The Labyrinth, I didn’t let you die then either! And I can’t even swim! And that time we went to Grenao and killed all those sucker Freedom Fighters! That was fun, right?”
“Yeah…” Nack smiled, “Some fun… but this is a journey I gotta make alone…”
“No!” Breech pleaded, clutching Nack’s paw, “Your little boy needs you, Nack! He does! I can’t do it alone!”
“You’re stronger than you think you are, Breech,” Nack gasped, “You can do it… ‘sides… you got James…”
“But he’s not the biological father!” Breech wailed, “We’re supposed to be great friends! We save each other’s lives all the bloody time! Your son needs to know you!”
“You can do it… Breech… if not you… who else?”
Nack’s eyes closed, his paw went strangely limp, and the heart monitor went flat-line. Breech felt tears she’d never known she had well up behind her eyes, and stream down her face. She didn’t scream or wail her grief, but rested her head on the sheets and let the tears come.
~~~
It was almost an hour before she left the room, angrier than she’d ever dreamed she could be. First she took a shot of R-15-2-15. It didn’t actually calm her, but now she was absolutely certain that she was angry, and that it had nothing at all to do with withdrawal symptoms.
She pushed it into her backpack, along with more ammo and supplies, then pushed her retractable Electrobar into her belt.
“Damn you, Cur… I’m gonna fucking kill you,” she snarled, and looked across the village. Now she had to steal that damn Emerald. Life was a bitch, then you became one.
She looked at the blue gem and sighed. This was awful. She was betraying James – but if she didn’t, anything could happen to Keith. She loved her son too much to let Cur hurt him.
But if she did go, she probably wouldn’t come back.
Ridiculous. If she handed that stupid blue emerald over quickly, Cur was bound to let her and Keith go, right?
She thought about this, then pulled out a piece of paper and a pen. In the careful, rounded handwriting of someone who thinks about every word, she wrote carefully,
“Robotropolis. Keith stolen. Cur did it. Don’t follow.”
She tried to think of somewhere to put it. Somewhere it wouldn’t be seen instantly, but would be found. James’ stupid scabbard! The perfect place – if it weren’t for the small problem that James was still carrying it.
Breech groaned and went to the door, searching for James. She could see him talking to a village official, though she couldn’t hear what he was saying. It didn’t matter. She wandered up close.
“…And you see, we did find the blue Chaos Emerald up in Grenao. The whole mission went without a hitch-“
Breech walked up to him quietly, "James, I need to talk to you," she said.
James turned to face Breech. "Sure. What is it, Breech?"
"I mean, away from these people," Breech was very pale.
James nodded, seeing in her face that something was wrong. "Alright. Follow me..." He took her by the arm and led her away from the guards and officials, towards the edge of the village. Once they were well away from everyone else, he turned back to her and asked softly, "What's wrong?"
"James, Nack's been shot. And he just died. And he..." Breech stopped, unsure of how much she could tell James without arousing the suspicion that she was about to cut and run with the Emerald, "He's dead. And I can't find Keith anywhere!"
A cold, ugly feeling filled James' stomach. "What?!" James had never liked Nack and thought the man was a cowardly scumbag, but he was Breech's friend. It must have hurt her to lose him. And it had to frighten to her to lose Keith right afterwards. "M-maybe Keith is just hiding. He had to be frightened..." On impulse, James pulled Breech into a hug.
Breech slipped the note into his scabbard as he held her, "No, I... I've got to go look for him." She thought about the Emerald she'd pushed into her backpack.
James nodded quickly, "I know. I'll look around too and see if I can find him."
"I... I don't think he's anywhere around here," Breech managed, "I think whoever shot Nack might have taken him..."
That was what James was afraid of. "Where will you start looking?"
"Somebody must have seen them leave," Breech insisted, "I'm going to find them, and when I find out whoever did this to Nack, I'm gonna pull their lungs out."
"...I'll come with you. Keith is my responsibility too..."
"No!" Breech said quickly, "No. I have to do this on my own. Keith is my son, and Nack... was... my friend. I know you didn't like him but... he wasn't as bad a person as you think. He was just a merc. Like me."
James understood. It was personal for her. He would be the same way if Tails had been taken... And someone had to stay back and guard him, too. James didn't feel comfortable leaving Tails alone with a murderer on the loose. He sighed, relenting. "You're right..." He pulled her close and gently kissed her lips. "You be careful out there, ok?"
"James..." Breech seemed awkward suddenly, "I... I want you to know... that I really don't deserve you."
James smiled slightly, "But you've got me anyway."
"If anything happens to me," Breech swallowed, "Please believe me when I say that I hope you guys win."
Something about the way she said that made him uneasy. It sounded like she was saying her final goodbyes, "You're going to come back just fine, you hear me?" James said firmly.
"Yeah," Breech forced a smile, and kissed James again, deeply.
James melted into the kiss, wrapping his strong arms around her. He suddenly felt afraid to let her go. But he knew that he had to. The kiss ended and he looked into her eyes, "I'll be waiting for you," he whispered.
Breech stood up and picked up her backpack, "I never meant for any of this to happen," she said simply. It was as if there was something she desperately wanted to say, but didn't dare to. She turned and climbed onto the hoverbike, then turned back to look at James. Now it was as if she was scared to leave him...
James forced a smile and waved goodbye.
Breech revved the engine, and took off in a cloud of dust.
