Chapter 20

To which Dave would simply wait the way he was doing at the moment. Worried out of his mind and going through a million possibilities of how something horrible could just out and happen to Hal and he would only be WAITING here.

Hal sighed and walked back inside going past Snake and going to the bedroom. He stood on one of the chairs trying to get one of the backpacks down.

Dave already didn't like this. "What are you up to?" He asked, looking at Hal do that.

"Trying to get a backpack down but all of your shit is covering it." Hal muttered as he tried to pull a bag out from under a lot of heavy tactical vests.

Which Snake started to pick up. "What for?"

Hal finally got the bag and got off of the chair. He went to his closet and packed a few days worth of clothes. "I'm staying at the hotel in town till you get your priorities in order."

Dave wasn't sure if he'd been that hurt before. "You know that whatever they are they don't include you leaving, right?" He asked.

Hal stared at him. "I'm not feeling like they do." he said putting the bag over his shoulder and grabbing the keys to the Jeep.

"Don't go" Dave had to wonder since when in this conversation had his voice started to sound like that. He had to control himself better but with Hal it was slowly becoming impossible. Speaking of control, he ended up having to close his eyes in order not to give in to the temptation of just taking the keys from his hand.

Hal sighed a little. "I should be saying that you brought this upon yourself but I won't." he said. "I-I got to go.." he said before leaving the room to go out to the Jeep before he changed his mind.

Dave winced when he followed him, knowing he was probably going to do the only thing he knew how to do well, and that was make things worse.

Hal got into the Jeep after throwing his bag in the back. He fumbled with the keys a little before finally getting it started.

Dave reached and gripped tightly onto the wheel before he left. "Why are you doing this?"

"Dave I'm doing this because you obviously need time to think about what you really want. Me and the baby or your old life before you found me." Hal said prying Snake's hand off of the wheel so he could leave.

"I thought you already knew what I wanted." Snake said a little confused. "Hell I thought this was what you wanted."

"I want us to be a family but that can't happen with you acting like a child." Hal said. "Please just let me think for a little while.." he added putting the Jeep into gear and driving off.

Dave would have wanted to do anything else that wasn't watching him go, but then again, he knew he was only going to make things worse. This served him right for hoping like that.

Hal got to the hotel and slept the rest of the night. He woke up the next day and got ready for his appointment.

A few hours pass and the phone started ringing back at the cabin.

It didn't take too many rings before Dave was on it with a tired voice. "Come in." He said, wondering if that was Hal but not risking the man's name for that just yet.

"This is Dr. Forrester you met me when you brought Hal in. I'm not supposed to be doing this since he told me not to quite firmly..but we're keeping him here for an overnight observation. I noticed his blood pressure is a little high probably from too much stress but I thought I should call." he said. "He got pretty upset when i mentioned telling you so we had to sedate him so maybe now would be a good time to come when he's not awake.."

Dave cursed under his breath as he thanked the man and quickly threw something on. 'The hell was I thinking, letting him go like that?!' He thought, worried, tired and above all else just pissed off, mostly at himself.

Dr. Forrester adjusted his glasses and hung up the phone before checking on Hal and his other patients.

By the time Dave got there he wanted to see Hal immediately, the protocol he had to go through instead was doing little else than fueling his anger and right that moment nobody really wanted any of his pent up rage nowhere near them, at least nobody who had a positive outlook to their fate.

Dr. Forrester met him at the counter. "Don't worry about the paper stuff." he said shooing the nurse away. "Follow me." he said to Snake, leading him to Hal's room where he was sound asleep.

It messed with Dave to see Hal like this and he set his jaw as he looked at him while ignoring all else before he waked up to Hal and brushed the man's hair away from his face. "What happened?" he asked Hal.

Dr. Forrester went over. "He'll be fine as long as his blood pressure and stress levels go down." he said standing next to Snake.

"Is there anything in particular he needs apart from that?" Snake asked, looking at nothing but Hal as he gently caressed his face as if it were made of some rare porcelain. He hoped Hal didn't notice; this bothered him.

"I want him off of his feet as much as possible. And I want you to help him a bit and keep his stress levels down." Dr. Forrester answered.

"Off his feet?" Snake asked, absently nuzzling Hal and leaning close to him.

"Taking it easy." Dr. Forrester answered.

"He won't like that."

"He's probably going to be very tired once he gets out of here tomorrow." Forrester said. "He'll probably welcome it."

"Why is that?"

"The meds we'll have him on will make him sleepy."

"Ah"

"I'll leave you two alone for a little bit." Forrester said leaving the room.

"Thanks" Snake muttered before the man was gone. As soon as the nice doctor left he kept caressing Hal, wondering when he'd wake up, how to tell him to take it easy and if the man would want him away from him.

It took a couple of hours for Hal to wake up. He stretched and moaned softly. He saw Snake and crossed his arms. "..."

"The doctor said you should take it ease" Snake said immediately.

"I told him not to call you." Hal said hoarsely.

If that hurt Snake he didn't show it, however he winced at the sound of Hal's voice and looked away. "I could leave if you need me to, maybe get you something to eat."

Hal sighed a little. "I-I'm fine." he said softly. "You didn't think did you?"

"Think what?"

Hal looked at him. "About what I said."

"..." Did Hal really of think him like that? By now it was becoming harder and harder not to look hurt but he managed. "I haven't stopped thinking about it by now, did you need anything?"

"Yeah." Hal answered. "I want an answer."

"An answer to what?" Snake was just corroborating his shot here.

"What you want." Hal replied. "Me and the baby or yourself."

"It's impressive how you have to ask." Snake replied, not hiding, for once, how he felt about this.

Hal just stared at him, obviously not liking Snake avoiding the answer.

"... Jesus... It's naturally you." Snake groaned.

"Your groan is really encouraging." Hal said sarcastically.

"Why do you have to ask?"

"Because Dave you're making me think that you don't want anything to do with this kid. I've been the one carrying it for six months, buying things to keep it healthy and warm and working my ass off so that every thing's ready." Hal replied. "I understand you're scared but you're not the only one."

"... You realize I'm a breath away from anything you could ever want, right?"

"I shouldn't have to ask.." Hal said softly.

"That was my fear when this all started, you know. That I'm not good with this." Doesn't know what to do with this and feels like Hal just gave him a blindfold, and sat him on rex to disactivate him with chopsticks. You can /feel/ the frustration.

"I feel like that all the time." Hal replied. "I was blindsighted by this too but it's not something you can just get rid of.."

"I don't want to get rid of anything, I actually mean this litteraly. What do you want me to do? Do you want me to finance something in particular or does this involve a more manual labor, I'll do it. When I say I don't know where to move, I mean I litteraly don't grasp the concept, throw me a light!" By this point Snake stopped caring how concice his message was as long as it got there, so, diferent to any other frustrating ocation he just started shooting words like bullets out of a desperate rookie with an AK-47.

Hal flinched at the tone and stared at him. "......" He grabbed Snake's hand and pressed it to his abdomen where it was met with a series of flutters and movement. "We're in this together whether we like it or not..As well as if we know nothing or everything about being parents.."

"I know. I'm glad for that, whether you believe that or not about..." He said, noting the movements and trailing off to look puzled and inspect that. He then leaned and decided that maybe pressing his face would manage to catch that better.

Hal nodded and watched him closely. The movements continued and ever so often a tiny hand or foot got Snake in the cheek.

For the moment Dave didn't want to move from there. He'd have been happy to stay and live just where he was and God be merciful on the doctor if he decided to ask him to move.

Hal sighed a little and laid back against the pillows, still watching him.

At a ceirtain point Snake started muttering something but he wasn't paying atention.

Hal tilted his head. "What?"

"Try not to threaten with taking this away from me again. It's not merciful"

"There you go again. This is serious, you know."

"I know and I'm glad you finally realize how serious it is."

"Since when do you hate me like this?"

"I don't hate you." Hal replied. "You just do selfish things that hurt me.."
