Wish Upon A Bird

* * *

The birds were so pretty.

She stared up the orange-pink sky, arms outstretched as the wind kissed her tiny face. She spun herself round and round, forgetting for the moment what Mommy always told her about making herself dizzy.

Chirp, chirp, chirp. Tweet, tweet, tweet. She loved the sounds they made. The birds flew around in small groups, dipping and rising wherever they went. The more she watched them, the more she felt herself up in the sky with them. Up, up, up the birds flew, one after the other. Sometimes their wings wouldn’t even flap; they would just glide across the sky with their wings stretched to the sides, riding through the air. Some were big, some were little. It didn’t matter. All of them were pretty.

Amazing.

A word she heard one of the miners say once. She asked Daddy what it meant one time, and he told her it meant 'more than great.' She agreed.

“Amazing,” she repeated, this time aloud.

She wished she could fly, just like the birds. She hoped that one day, she’d be able to fly like them. She wasn’t sure why she wanted to fly. It just looked like so much fun. It looked free. If she could fly, she could go just about anywhere. If she could fly, she would go just about anywhere. She’d keep flying up and up and up. Up to the clouds, up to the stars. She wondered why birds never did that, why they didn’t just keep flying up. That always confused her. If birdies knew how to fly, why didn’t they keep flying up and away?

To her, it was silly. They had wings, after all. Didn’t they know they could just keep going wherever they wanted?

Falling to the soft ground, she stopped her spinning. The sky kept turning and turning without her, as though it wasn’t ready for her to stop. Other than a few clouds, there was nothing she could look at to keep herself from feeling dizzy. After a minute or so, she knew the world would catch up to her. She kept taking deep breaths like Mommy always said, and did her best to lie still.

The grass felt prickly and cold against her skin, and her hair was a mess behind her head. She knew Mommy was going to get mad at her for getting all grassy and muddy and dirty, but it was okay. She told her to play outside, and bath time always came before bedtime.

In the distance, she heard the back door to the house open. A few seconds later, Mommy’s voice was singing out to her.

“Sammy, dinner!”

The world stopped spinning as the wind blew harder. She watched as leaves and tree branches shook and danced in the breeze. The birds started chirping a bit more, and a few seconds later, they jumped off the branches and started flying away. She was a bit sad to see them go, but she knew they’d come back. They always did. They probably just really liked the wind.

Watching the last tiny birdie disappear behind the hills, Sammy looked up at the sky. It was getting dark and pretty soon she’d start to see some stars sprinkle across the sky. She liked birds, but she thought that maybe she liked the stars better. They were more different, more strange.

What was the word Daddy taught her?

Mysterious.

That was it. ‘Strange, but in a good way.’ She liked how mysterious the stars were.

A minute later, she heard the birdies again. They were back. She watched some of the smaller ones land in a big, weeping tree. They stood and hopped around on the branches, chirping and crowing at each other. She wrinkled her nose and smiled. It sounded like they were talking to each other. Maybe they were, in their own birdie language. She wondered what they were saying, and thought of how fun it would be to get to talk to them and understand them.

Maybe someday, she would.
