Tenkage: Thanks. Glad you liked it.
Reye: I noticed. Thanks for liking my story. I’ve been reading yours lately, as well. Very good.
Chapter 2
We eventually came upon a man and a woman arguing about something. The guy said something about his booze being stolen. Don’t look at me like that. I’m six. I have a short attention span. I figured the girl was like my sister- stopping a guy from having fun because of morals or something. So, I helped him out. I found his alcohol, grabbed it and handed it back to him. I got a gold piece out of it, as well as a weird rolled-up piece of paper.
We walked some more. I found Baltazar, the guy who runs the general store, and he wanted us to kill some beetles in his store. I grabbed my toy gun and walked into his store. I wonder why my sister didn’t do any of the work. It was her idea. I figured I’d charge the owner later. But then, Arthur called to me from the window.
“Baltazar owes some protection money to Nicky the Nickname,” he said, “Forget the beetles and smash up his stock, instead. There’s a gold coin in it for you.”
Like I said, I liked Arthur. He was a fun guy. I smashed up Baltazar’s stuff with my toy sword. I found a steel knife in one of the crates. The hilt had these weird slits in it. Curious, I put it in my pocket, sheathed, of course. It might sell for a good amount. After smashing up most of the stuff, Arthur threw a coin at me. I caught it, and then walked out. I told Baltazar I’d killed the beetles. The idiot believed me. I had four coins now. I could run away now, but I figured I’d get five and then run, to give my sister both insult and injury.
On my way out, I found a few papers scattered around. Four of them, in fact. Arrest warrants. So that’s what the rolled-up sheet of paper I’d found earlier was. The guard probably dropped them. I figured I’d give them back to him for a coin, but then I ran into Arthur again. Well, me and my sister, really, but I was ignoring her right now. She was talking way too much.
“Give me those arrest warrants,” said Arthur, “there’s a gold coin in it for you.”
I grinned. At least with Arthur, I was sure I’d get a gold piece out of it. I handed him the warrants. He gave me the coin. I had five now. I turned around to show my sister, and then I’d bolt away. Bad move. The moment she saw the coins, she grabbed them and made a dash for the merchant. I stood there in shock. By the time I recovered, it was too late. She was running away with the music box. I never really believed it was magical, but I figured I had nothing left to lose, so I followed her.
By the time I caught up, she’d spun the key and the box was twirling around, red light coming out of it. Holy shit. What if it really was magic? I dashed for the box, just in case it actually worked, but then it vanished. That was dumb.
“Five gold coins,” said Rose with a sigh, “let’s just go to bed.”
Idiot. I went to bed anyway. The mutt we saw being picked on earlier was there. I suppose it grew attached to Rose. Whatever. I just wanted to sleep. But then, I heard the loud, annoying voice of the town guard.
Something was up. Were we in trouble for helping Arthur? I hoped not. I was too young to go to jail.
“What do you want?” Rose asked the guard. It was obvious she nearly pissed herself.
“I work for Lord Lucien, Miss,” said the guard, “He wants to speak with you. I’ve been sent to collect you.”
Well, hit me on the head and call me a donkey. Looks like we were headed for the castle after all. It would have been perfect if my sister hadn’t gone bananas. I’m serious. I could feel her excitement. It almost made me not want to go. Almost.
The guard brought us to his buddies who were waiting in the alleyway. Together, they escorted my sister and me through Old Town, and then through Bowerstone Market. It was night and all of the shops were closed. It’s too bad. I’d never been to the Market before. I would’ve liked to see it during business hours.
We made a right turn at the town square, walked past a tavern and a forge, and then walked to Fairfax Gardens for about an hour. The gardens were beautiful. If I’d been some stupid little girl, I would’ve been stunned. I looked at my sister, and saw she was standing in place and staring at everything. Silly girl.
After about half an hour- that’s how long it took us to get my sister walking- we finally arrived. I looked up at an old man who was apparently the butler. He looked down at me and smiled warmly. His master was probably going to be pleased. He turned around, opened the large doors, and we were on our way in.
