The Hunter and the Hunted
II. The Hunter and the Hunted
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The metallic catacombs echoed as Samus crept down the next corridor. The tunnels below the surface looked almost identical to every other planet’s, but the cool metal belied the magma covered surface of Alinos. Samus had hovered above the glowing hot planet for what seemed like hours, finally spotting a place to land. She didn’t like the idea of leaving the ship stationary for too long. Who knew how stable the landmass was?
The airlock door at the end of the tunnel opened into yet another, not daring to break the monotony. Zoomers scurried along the walls and floor, hindering Samus’ progress. With expert marksmanship, she picked the spine covered vermin off, one by one. She sighed as she passed through the hall, slightly fogging her visor. This mission almost seemed too easy.
The next airlock opened, giving way not into another corridor, but a large, open room. A walkway wound upwards along the walls of the cylindrical room, making many floors accessible.
Samus entered the room, her left hand placed on her arm cannon, ready to fire. The room was uneasily quiet. The power suit’s scanner inspect the area as Samus continued, checking for threats and absorbing as much information as possible. She began ascending the walkway.
She reached a landing on the walkway, with a ceiling overhead supported by rectangular pillars. As Samus wove between them, her scanner’s emergency warning began to sound, an annoying beeping. “Dangerous temperatures!” the HUD read before her eyes. A little arrow flashed in the right hand corner of her vision.
Samus jumped behind one of the support pillars, her back to it and arm cannon ready. Just as she took cover, a spew of flame erupted along the side of the pillar, right where she had been standing. She peered around the corner of the pillar, only to snap back to cover as another fiery attack shot forth. She sidled around the other side of the pillar, peering around it, finally spotting her attacker.
It was a large figure, roughly humanoid. It appeared to be made of stone, and had large spikes, apparently made up of fire, jutting from it’s body. It’s head swiveled and spotted Samus just as her scanner finished compiling its data. The thing raised it’s arm, shooting forth another spray of fire. Samus jumped out of the way, taking cover behind another pillar. Her scanner gave her a heads up debriefing on the enemy.
Spire:
"Analysis of this creature's physiology indicates the presence of molten ferrous compounds normally found only in a planet's core. Spire is armed with the MAGMAUL, a weapon that lobs cohesive bursts of superheated magma."*
“Great…” Samus muttered to herself. A big fiery monster. She was grinning a bit, though. Finally, something that might make this mission a bit more challenging.
Samus swung around the side of the pillar to face her enemy, firing rapidly from her arm cannon. The creature grunted a bit, lashing it’s free arm out as if it were swatting a fly rather than energy shots. It raised it’s arm and fired another heat blast, forcing Samus back behind the support pillar.
“Damn…” she hissed inaudibly to herself. The energy shots were doing absolutely no damage. Spire’s life signs were displayed on the HUD, still 89% full, while her own were significantly lower. She pressed her finger into a sensor on her arm cannon, causing the mouth of the cannon to open up in four directions. Time for some heavier firepower.
Another blast to the pillar knocked her down to the floor. She jumped to her feet, the sound of Spire’s trudging footsteps coming ever closer. She spun around to see Spire raising his arm, the end glowing in a ball of deadly heat.
Samus fired the arm cannon, the projectile screaming through the air directly towards the glowing, yet-to-be-fired heat blast. Spire shot his weapon instinctually, the spurt of flame colliding directly with Samus’ missile. She was already behind a pillar as the explosion sounded. The entire room seemed to shake from the result of the two firepower’s colliding.
Samus peeked around the corner of the pillar, spying Spire face down on the ground. The scanner identified him as temporarily unconscious. Beside the behemoth like body was a glowing blue crystal, about the size of a fist. An Octolith. Samus picked it up off the ground. She needed to find out what these things were for. They seemed to be popping up everywhere.
Without a backwards glance at the defeated adversary lying on the floor, Samus continued across the landing and up the ascending walkway.
…
Corridor after corridor led her to a large door, similar to one she had encountered in the Celestial Archives. Behind that had been a giant totem pole looking thing that had been guarding an Octolith. She couldn’t expect anything less from this planet. The door opened and allowed her inside.
The room was large, as if a fight had been intended to transpire within it. It seemed, however, that Samus had arrived too late. There was a giant robotic looking eyeball floating above the ground. It glared blankly over the room. Samus’ scanner identified it as a “Slench.”
The eye was knocked back a bit as it was hit in the pupil by a green ball of energy. The scanner picked up the other presence in the room. It was another hunter. It was wearing a power suit, one that somehow looked like Samus’ own. The scanner identified him as “Weavel.”
Another shot from the hunter’s cannon, and the eye fell to the ground. The bulb of the eye went dim, and a red light began flashing from the ceiling. The HUD began flashing a warning: “Evacuate the area immediately.” Directly under this message was a timer set for less than five minutes. Samus could guess what this meant.
Weavel walked around the Slench disinterestedly, making his way to the far wall, where the eye had obviously been rooted to the wall until moments ago. Glowing in the concave recess of the wall was another blue Octolith. Samus approached as Weavel reached for the Octolith. His hand froze upon the blue crystal as he heard the click of Samus’ arm cannon.
“I’ll be taking that,” Samus said, her cannon trained on Weavel’s head. The hunter dropped his hand, the crystal clasped firmly within it. He turned, his dull yellow visor seeming to stare at Samus. His voice was artificial and robotic as he spoke, but Samus thought she could hear some hint of malevolent glee within it.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” Weavel said, turning so that his entire body faced Samus. She backed up a few steps, her cannon still trained on him.
“I’ve been waiting a long, long time for this, Samus Aran,” Weavel said, his robotic voice arcing with what might have been rage. From the wrist of his right hand, the one gripping the Octolith, burst a glowing blade of energy. The room was beginning to shake, the timer on the HUD dwindling with each passing second.
“Time to die, Hunter,” Weavel cried, charging forward, slashing with his energy blade. Samus jumped out of the way, firing round after round from her arm cannon. Weavel also dodged, not nearly as slow as the last hunter had been. He fired from his cannon, spurting arcing shots of green energy. The two continued to fire at each other, dodging each other’s attacks expertly.
Samus willed her next command, the suit responding to her thoughts, connected to her every cell. Her body curled up, in an impossible fashion, she knew, but it felt as easy as a somersault. Her body was now nothing more than a metallic shining sphere, rolling insanely fast towards Weavel.
She rolled between the hunter’s legs, expanding behind him, taking her original form. Weavel turned around to defend himself, but was too late. Samus shot off a blast directly into the hunter’s face, knocking him backwards. The Octolith flew from his hand and into the air, which Samus caught easily.
Within seconds, she had morphed into the spherical form again, rolling out of the room and down the corridors, leaving Weavel far behind. The timer counted down steadily on her heads up display.
The next door opened up into the room where she had battled Spire. She sped across the walkway, making her way down to the lower level of the room. As she passed through the roofed area where she had fought with Spire, she froze. She was suddenly immobile.
Tangles of electricity began to spark around Samus, forcing her out of the morph ball and into her original form. Her energy signals were steadily falling on her visor’s display. She writhed around on the ground, the Octolith still clasped in her hand.
Samus looked up as she felt weight on her wrist. The pain had stopped. There was a foot pinning her hand to the ground. A blue clad hand reached down and pried the Octolith from her fingers. Samus studied the figure as it opened a side compartment and stowed the crystal. It was another hunter. It was humanoid, clad in blue armor with green strips decorating it. The faceless helmet was looking at her, it’s weapon trained on her body. “Sylux,” the scanner deduced.
“Give me the other one,” it said. It’s voice was static and muffled, as if being communicated over a radio. Behind the visor, Samus’ face sank. How had this thing known that she had two on her? Samus remained defiantly still, causing the mysterious hunter to fire upon her again. Samus screamed within her suit as her energy levels continued to fall. The timer indicated that there was only two minutes left to escape.
“Give it to me,” the hunter repeated. He stepped off of Samus’ wrist so that she could reach it. She thought about trying a quick attack, but knew he would be expecting it. She didn’t have enough power left to fight him. A side compartment at her hip opened, and from within she retrieved the glowing blue crystal. Sylux snatched it from her outstretched hand, his weapon never leaving her as he stowed it.
“I’ll be around, if you find anymore,” the hunter said. Without a further word, the hunter dashed off, leaving Samus to pick herself up off of the floor. She looked around, but the hunter had disappeared. Her scanner didn’t even pick up any life signs.
The timer before Samus’ eyes was diminishing quickly. She couldn’t afford to stay here any longer. Without any Octoliths, she hurried towards the exit, racing against time to reach her ship.
…
Samus’ starship drifted lazily in the void of space. She sat at the helm of her ship, shed of her power suit for the day. a database display before her.
“Spire,” Samus said sternly. The computer responded, showing her a page of information.
Spire:
Species: Diamont
Affiliation: None
Reward: 10,000(Alive or Dead)
Profile: The last known Diamont and a known patriot of his people. It is presumed that he seeks the Ultimate Power to aid in his search for his race. Approach with caution. Engage if necessary.
Samus frowned at this. Nothing about this hunter’s intentions seemed of ill will. It made her almost remorseful of having hurt him earlier that day. But still, she had her orders.
“Weavel,” she said. Another page was displayed, this one with a red border, signifying a dangerous criminal.
Weavel:
Species: Cyborg
Affiliation: Space Pirate
Reward: 50,000(Alive or Dead)
Profile: A reanimated Space Pirate General. A commanding officer presumed to be neutralized by Samus Aran, his brain and spinal cord were intact, and attached to a robotic exoskeleton created through the Space Pirates’ reverse engineering of Samus Aran’s power suit. It is presumed that he seeks the Ultimate Power for Space Pirate gain. Approach with Extreme Caution. Engage on sight.
Well, Samus thought. That answers a few questions. No wonder this guy hated her so much. And it also explained why his power suit had seemed so familiar. It was a knock off of her own.
“Kanden,” Samus requested, remembering her fight with the green monstrosity from the Celestial Archives. The page was bordered in yellow, signifying special orders.
Kanden:
Species: Enoema
Affiliation: None
Reward: 100,000(Alive)
Profile: An escaped Galactic Federation experiment. Genetically enhanced Enoema super soldier. Extremely Valuable. Approach with Extreme Caution. Do Not Engage.
Samus rolled her eyes. They would offer more money for something that was their own fault. What would the Federation ever do without her? In any case, there was no way she was going to risk her own neck to fetch that thing. There was only one more name to reference now.
“Sylux,” Samus said with notable disdain. Like Weavel’s, it was red.
Sylux:
Species: Unknown
Affiliation: Unknown
Reward 150,000(Alive) 50,000(Dead)
Profile: Guilty of Grand Theft against the Galactic Federation. Armed with Galactic Federation prototype weapon and armor. Affiliations Unknown. Wanted Alive for questioning. Approach with caution. Engage if necessary.
Samus frowned at the screen. This was hardly any help at all. This fugitive had stolen two Octoliths, leaving her with one instead of three.
With an exasperated sigh, Samus rose from the pilot’s seat and headed for the bathroom, stripping her zero suit from her body as she walked. She was still on edge from Sylux’s attack, her energy literally having been drained from her.
She activated the taps, lounging in the basin as it filled. Samus closed her eyes, trying to relax after the trials of the day. This mission was turning out to be quite eventful indeed.
